Erinome:Hello dear friends! Welcome to our weekly podcast. I'm Erinome, and sitting next to me is Enceladus. How are you today, Enceladus?
Enceladus:I'm good, Erinome! Thanks for asking. Did you hear about the recent government work report? It has a lot of important news, especially about education.
Erinome:Oh yes! I did! The report was given on March 5th at the opening meeting of the 4th session of the 14th National People's Congress. Premier Li Qiang talked about many plans for 2026.
Enceladus:Right! Let's start with education first. What caught your eye most?
Erinome:Well, the part about preschool education! The report said they will "improve the free preschool education policy". Do you know, in 2025, this policy already helped 14 million children?
Enceladus:Wow, 14 million! That's a huge number. So free preschool education means families don't have to pay for their kids' preschool, right?
Erinome:Yes! For example, in public kindergartens, the fees for the last year of preschool are free. And even in some private kindergartens, they reduce the fees too.
Enceladus:That must help many parents. Raising kids is expensive, so this policy can really lighten their负担 (fudan).
Erinome:Exactly! And there's more about education. The report also said they will "increase the supply of regular high school seats".
Enceladus:Oh, right! Many students worry about not getting into high school. More seats mean more kids can go to high school. That's good news!
Erinome:Yes! And for universities, they will start a new round of "Double First-Class" construction. Do you know what "Double First-Class" is?
Enceladus:Um... I think it's about building top universities and top disciplines, right? To make higher education better.
Erinome:You got it! They also want to train more creative talents. That's important for the country's development.
Enceladus:Speaking of development, the report has other plans too. Like increasing people's income. They will make a plan to help low-income groups earn more, and improve salary and social security systems.
Erinome:Oh, that's great! Everyone wants to earn more money. What about consumption? I heard there's something about "old for new" for consumer goods.
Enceladus:Yes! They will use 250 billion yuan of super-long special government bonds to support people replacing old things with new ones. Like old phones, TVs, maybe cars?
Erinome:Haha, maybe! That can help people buy new things and boost the economy. What about investment?
Enceladus:The central government will arrange 755 billion yuan for investment, and 800 billion yuan from super-long special bonds for "two key" constructions. I think "two key" means important projects, like infrastructure.
Erinome:Makes sense. Also, there's a part about "new productive forces". They want to develop new industries like integrated circuits, aerospace, biomedicine, and low-altitude economy.
Enceladus:Oh, those sound high-tech! And future industries like quantum technology, 6G... Wow, China is moving fast in tech!
Erinome:Right! They also want to deepen "AI+", so AI can be used in more areas. That will make life easier, maybe?
Enceladus:I hope so! What about people who move from rural areas to cities? The report said "promote urbanization of agricultural transfer population" and "relax conditions for taking the high school entrance exam in the inflow area".
Erinome:Oh, that's a big help! Many kids follow their parents to cities, but before, maybe they couldn't take the exam there. Now it's easier. Their parents must be happy.
Enceladus:Yes! Education is so important for kids. Speaking of which, the report also mentioned healthcare. The per capita financial subsidy for residents' medical insurance will increase by 24 yuan.
Erinome:That's good. And social security? I heard the minimum monthly basic pension for urban and rural residents will increase by 20 yuan.
Enceladus:Small increase, but every bit helps, especially for elderly people. Also, they will support families with more children to improve their housing.
Erinome:That's family-friendly. What about green development?
Enceladus:They will set up a national low-carbon transition fund and develop new growth points like hydrogen energy and green fuels. Good for the environment!
Erinome:So many plans! It feels like the government is working hard on many areas—education, economy, people's life, environment...
Enceladus:Yes! All these policies are to make people's life better. I hope they can be carried out well.
Erinome:Me too! Well, time is flying. We talked about education, income, consumption, tech, and more from the government work report.
Enceladus:It's really interesting to learn about these policies. They affect our daily life a lot.
Erinome:Okay, that's it for today. Thanks for listening, dear friends. Let's talk again next time!
Enceladus:See you next time! Bye!
