A Tea Ceremony on the Mountain
On a beautiful, sunny day, I set off for a hiking trip with a little outdoor tea ceremony.
At the summit, I paid my respects to the statue of Dainichi Nyorai, then took in the beautiful views of the mountains and the sea beyond as I prepared a bowl of matcha.
Perhaps drawn by the sweet scent of the Japanese sweets, a little insect came buzzing over. It hovered nearby, seemingly watching over my tea ceremony.
In the distance, I could hear deer calling.
As I watched birds soaring high in the sky, I remembered the time a black kite swooped down and snatched bread right out of my hands.
I'd like to share a peaceful moment spent enjoying the summit of Mount Dainichiyama all to myself.

I went to see the Hegurinmachi festival in the Heguri district for the first time.
It was raining, so the festival floats were covered in plastic sheets, but that gave them an almost dreamlike, otherworldly atmosphere.
As one of the floats came rushing toward me from a distance, it briefly reminded me of an Ohmu from the film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
I had also never seen so many food and festival stalls lining the approach to Heguri Tenjin Shrine, which is usually so quiet.
I headed home while watching the excitement build as four festival floats gathered together. Apparently, they later assembled at Heguri Iyogatake Park. In a typical year, eight festival floats gather there.
Even in the rain, Hegurinmachi was full of energy. I hope the weather will be sunny next year.
I had been feeling a little down, but listening to the festival music lifted my spirits. I hope that someone else listening to this Heguri festival music will feel uplifted, too.

On this day, festival floats marched through the Satoyama hills, filling the air with traditional festival music (matsuri-bayashi).You’ll hear the sounds of flutes and drums fading in and out, drawing closer and then moving away again. In between, the recording captures the passing of cars, birds chirping, insects buzzing, my dogs barking, and the faint voices of people in the distance.

Cooking New Rice Over a Wood Fire
I cook over a wood fire in the earthen-floored kitchen of my old Japanese farmhouse.
The wild boars destroyed our entire little rice paddy, but I was lucky enough to receive some freshly harvested rice!
So I wasted no time and cooked it in a traditional Japanese pot called a hagama. I recorded the sounds along the way.
Behind the crackling flames and popping firewood, you can also hear the sounds of me washing dishes.
At around 9 minutes, there's a little lid-opening moment. I just love the bubbling sound of the rice cooking!
There's another lid-opening moment at around 13:30.

I visited the EISUKE SOMEKAWA Exhibition – Boso Edition: Eternal Prayers, currently on view at the Nokogiri Museum of Art in Kanaya, Futtsu City, Chiba Prefecture.
As part of a museum concert titled “Prayers Through Eternity: Buddhist Chanting Echoing Through a Mandala Space,” I experienced shōmyō (traditional Buddhist chanting) for the very first time.
A large mandala painting stood before us, while Buddhist monks from the Shingon Hōkyōkai surrounded the audience, filling the space with their sacred chants. I was immersed in the vibrations, feeling the sound resonate throughout my entire body.
At times, the enormous mandala in front of me seemed to take on a three-dimensional form. I simply let myself enjoy the moment with my whole being, bathing in a shower of Buddhist chants.
It felt absolutely wonderful, and I left wanting to experience it all over again!
In this episode, I share a short excerpt of the chanting from that day and talk about the time I spent at the museum and in Kanaya.

After several episodes featuring the sounds of local festivals, this time I’m sharing the sounds of nature from my garden.
This morning, I woke up to the sweet sound of a bird singing.
You can hear that bird right at the beginning of the episode.
When I took my dogs for a walk around the garden, I spotted birds in the trees along the river. So after coming back home, I grabbed my camera and voice recorder and headed back outside.
It happens all the time: whenever I don’t have my camera with me, I seem to encounter birds everywhere. But when I go out carrying a camera with a telephoto lens, they somehow disappear.
The river had settled down too, flowing gently and making a lovely sound.
At around 8:15, you can hear the high-pitched call of a deer in the distance.
So, here are some of the sounds from my garden this morning.

The first day of "Yawatanmachi."
Bring you the live sounds of the Nakoshiyama Shrine's mikoshi (portable shrine) entering Tsurugaya Hachimangu Shrine.
Yawatanmachi is the largest festival in the Awa region, where 11 mikoshi, 5 floats, and festival boats gather for the grand entrance.Accompanied by the sounds of flutes, tsuzumi (hand drums), and taiko drums, the Sarutahiko (deities acting as guides) from Nakoshiyama Shrine and Takamimusubi Shrine enter side-by-side as the opening act of the day. Following them, the mikoshi dashes into the shrine grounds, repeating the traditional dynamic movements of "momi" (shaking and rocking) and "sashi" (lifting high up).At the 4:45 mark, you can hear the powerful, resonant strains of the "Kiyari-uta" (traditional chant) begin.
Feel as if you are right there on the scene—immersed in the festival's raw energy where runners dash through the grounds to the chants of "Oisa, oisa!" while the "Sora-koi!" shouts mix with the rituals and the traditional songs.【About the Show / Host】
