In Tiny Climate Challenge Episode 8 our Guest Challenger "Tiny Mayela" Gillan talks about how she reduced her carbon footprint by exploring alternative modes of transportation after she was forced to park her car for a week.
Guest ChallengerMayela Gillan is currently getting her Masters Degree in Environmental Health Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. She also works as a researcher with the State of California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) and the Center for Environmental Research and Children's Health (CERCH). Her research is focused on artificial food dye ingestion and exposure assessments involving children, pregnant women, and women of children bearing age in the United States.
In August 2018, she completed a Bachelor of Science in Public Health with a concentration in Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Arizona. During her undergraduate studies, she gained valuable professional experience as an environmental consultant, worked on a research project to monitor air quality in occupational settings and also published a paper called, "Shimá sání - Adobe Oven Resource Guide".
Mayela identifies as a Chicanx woman and is proud to be a third-generation college graduate and a Climate Reality Leader. Her favorite things to do include dancing Baile Folklorico, attending public health seminars, and learning more about environmental hazards that impact disadvantaged communities. She plans to work with disadvantaged communities to mitigate hazardous exposures, bring to light the social and environmental injustices which occur, and advocate for better health outcomes in these communities of concern.

Tiny Climate Challenge Guest: John Bottorff is a board member and Chief Informational Officer (CIO), for CleanEarth4Kids.org. He has donated thousands of hours to help students develop and deliver presentations, work on projects, build and refine models and calculations, play in parks, study, take Teddy on walks. He also enjoys listening to stories and ideas, laughing a lot, and eating lots of pizza, pretzels, and pancakes.

Tiny Climate Challenge Expert: Lori Somers is the Community and Municipal Relations Representative for Waste Management where she has worked for 30 years. She works closely with multiple Southern California cities to help them develop comprehensive recycling and diversion programs to meet their zero waste goals and comply with local and state waste diversion mandates. Outside of work, Lori has been involved with Soroptimist International of Oceanside-Carlsbad since 1998. From 2006 - 2007 she served as President of the Soroptimist and was honored as Soroptimist of the Year for her leadership and service to the organization and her community. In her spare time, Lori also enjoys traveling, skiing and reading.

Tiny Climate Challenge Episode 3 is all about vermicomposting. Our Challenge Expert and Guest Christine Bevilacqua started vermicompost (aka worm compost bin) at her home to help reduce organic waste and her carbon footprint.
Challenge Expert and Guest: Christine Bevilacqua was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, but has called Southern California her home for over 20 years. She has a Master's Degree in Urban Sustainability and experience with Environmental Justice, Urban Agriculture and City Planning. She is currently employed in the renewable energy sector, focusing on innovative solar technology.

Mayela is the Chief Environmental Optimist (CEO) of The Manasjan Consultancy and an Adjunct Professor teaching environmental science at UC San Diego Extension. She is proud to be recognized as a 2018 Women in Water by Cuyamaca College's Center for Water Studies and the proud recipient of the 2017 Climate Leader Award from the San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative.
She also currently serves as a San Diego Regional team leader for the Association for Women in Water Energy and Environment (AWWEE), Co-Chair of the Climate Reality Project North San Diego County chapter, Vice Chair of the City of Del Mar's Sustainability Advisory Board and a Board Director of the San Diego Energy District, all organizations dedicated to engaging, educating and empowering our communities on critical environmental issues.
Mayela prides herself in being a lifelong learner and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Systems with an emphasis in Ecology, Behavior and Evolution from the University of California San Diego and a Master of Science in Executive Leadership from the University of San Diego.
