  • Are you Committed to Constant Professional Growth?
There are some fundamentals that all lawyers need to embrace, and the starting point for all of them is a commitment to ongoing professional growth.
That doesn’t mean you occasionally read a book on your holidays.  It doesn’t mean you bulk watch Suits on the weekend.
It means that every day, you need to consistently and incrementally improve your skills and knowledge from the day before – on purpose.
The cumulative effect of a commitment to professional growth will pay off in spades throughout your career.  It will also have the following benefits:
Getting you outside your comfort zone
Decreasing your sense of arrogance that has a tendency to creep in
Expanding your ability to provoke future thinking, rather than always staying with “this is how we’ve always done it”.
So get cracking – what are you going to do today?

  • Is a 20 Hour Work Day either Normal or Necessary?
As lawyers, it is pretty much accepted that we are going to work long hours.
But is that the only reality of legal practice?
Is it necessary to work massive hours to get ahead in your legal career, or can you make a go of it while still making a conscious decision to avoid such long days?
In this podcast I explore the massive work day for lawyers – is it really necessary? Can you avoid it and still get ahead?
What are you going to sacrifice along the way?

  • Patience is Not Always a Virtue
Patience is commonly extolled as a great virtue, and most of the time it is.
However, as lawyers we are prone to deceiving ourselves – we say that we’re being patient, but in reality we are being something else.
In this podcast I look at the question: when is patience not really a virtue?
The answer, of course, is when it’s not patience at all.
To highlight the problem where patience is a veneer for the real issue, I look at three examples:
    Where patience is just the excuse for a deeper issue;
Where rather than patience, what’s holding you back is fear; and
Where patience is just a basis for you to be lazy.
My question for you today is this: what is it that you should be doing that you aren’t? What is it that you’re telling yourself is coming, but haven’t actually taken any steps to begin?

  • How to Craft a Persuasive Message
In the last two episodes I have looked at some fundamentals of persuasion, albeit perhaps in a way that’s different to what you might have thought.
We have looked at how useful persuasion is in legal practice in episode 39, and then in episode 40 I considered some of the underlying issues that you need to tackle about your other participant in a persuasive exercise.
Today we look at the specific, practical ways to craft a persuasive message having regard to those things we’ve talked about before.
In reality there are few steps involved:
Consider your topic – what is it specifically you are trying to do, and more importantly – what are you NOT trying to do?
Next once you know your topic, you need to nail it – be an expert in what you’re trying to say
After that you need to consider who your message is going to – who is it, what are their issues, and what are the roadblocks to your message getting through
Consider making concessions – sometimes one step back is really two steps forward
Finally – hit hard, and hit fast.
    Enjoy!

  • More Persuasion for Lawyers – The Connection Element
In this second of my three part podcast series on persuasion for lawyers, I talk about the importance of the connection element when it comes to persuasion.
Persuasion does not happen inside a vacuum.  Rather, it happens within the context of a relationship.  Whether or not you are aware of it, there is always an element of relationship, which means that if you can tune in to the person aspects of your audience or your target, your efforts at persuasion are going to be a lot more effective.
Understanding how the other party ticks means you can tailor your efforts towards them specifically, rather than using a generic approach.
There is, after all, no “one size fits all” model for persuasion. It is subtle, it is nuanced, and the more you can know about the nature of the other person, the better off you are going to be.

  • How to be Persuasive – Part 1

  • Some Thoughts On Integrity
Integrity is an interesting discussion point for lawyers. Everyone, at some fundamental level, agrees with the concept that integrity is a necessary element for any lawyer in practice.
But we seem to hone in on integrity as if it only exists within the “big” issues.
    Don’t steal from the client.
    Don’t break the law.
    Don’t destroy evidence.
But there is a more fundamental threshold of integrity that I think, disturbingly, lawyers are much more comfortable with.
So my question for you today is this: where do you draw the line?

Are you a Real Lawyer or a Pretender?

  • Why do you Do what you Do?
It’s a crucial question that all lawyers need to ask themselves, but many leave things a bit late – why is it that you do what you do?
    Is it money?
    Prestige?
    Power?
    Nerdishness?
    Desire to help?
    Problem solving?
    You’re not sure?
Well let’s take a few minutes today to focus you on just that question – and hopefully at the other end your brain will be churning with ideas about what your motivation really is.
