Greener Lagos: Understanding the ban on Single-Use Plastics, Satchet Water, and Styrofoam (The Government’s Perspective)
On this episode, Mr. Bankole Michael Omoniyi, Director of Climate Change and Environmental Planning (CCEP) at the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, clarified that “SATCHET WATER AND PET BOTTLES” are not included in the ban. However, the Lagos State Government has prohibited the use of:
· Nylon bags less than 40 microns
· Plastic spoons
· Plastic cups
· Straws
This ban is part of the government's efforts to reduce environmental pollution, particularly from styrofoam, which has been a major concern in Lagos. Mr. Omoniyi shared the history of styrofoam in Lagos, highlighting the Surulere pollution incident.
The environmental impact of styrofoam is significant, contributing to:
· Clogged drainage channels
· Flooding
· Climate change
· Diseases like cholera
To promote a greener Lagos, the state government is
· Meeting with manufacturers to discuss extended producer responsibilities
· Encouraging alternatives to single-use plastics
