Hello beautiful people
On today’s podcast we have one of the world’s top ultramarathon coaches, Andy DuBois. Andy in his earlier years, changed gears quite dramatically, from studying to become a Land Surveyor, he decided to leave that behind and pursue his dream of finishing a Hawaii Ironman. It was certainly no easy journey, taking 5 years of both internal and external setbacks, but achieved this dream he did, and after completing 9 Ironman and 2 Hawaii Ironman, he began to ask the larger questions of a more long-term passion and purpose.
Andy proceeded to move overseas to London which also resulted in him moving into the ultramarathon space and in his first ultra, being 90 miles, he made every mistake you could. From pacing to nutrition to footwear, he made it. But instead of this being a turning point in which he tried something different, he took it upon himself to learn from this lack of preparation and knowledge, and his second ultra, the famous UTMB still remains what he terms one of his most perfect races.
Fast forward, now into his early 50s, Andy has many ultra accomplishments under his belt, such as winning a couple of 100 milers and competing for Australia in the World Trail Championships, and is now a highly respected online endurance training coach who runs his very successful and in demand Mile 27 Coaching Business. His aim with Mile 27 is to provide the most complete training service for ultra-runners available anywhere in the world.
What I personally love about this podcast is Andy’s ability to partner both research and strategy, with the importance of the pursuit of becoming your best self and having your best race. He is certainly my go-to guy for updates on the latest research when it comes to both physical and mental performance, and I’m all for his emphasis on mindset training being in line with physical training; if you aren’t strong enough, you can train it. There are a whole lot of mindset gems in this podcast from understanding the decision-making criteria for a DNF, something I am personally interested in, when is it appropriate to pull out and when is it appropriate to push through, to how to deal with the inevitable negative thoughts that creep in when fatigued and in pain, to the importance of being clear on your why and how external motivation can play into a little extra effort when it is most needed. Andy is also a proud husband and father of two and, he shares some wise insight into how to balance both parenthood and not lose who you are in the midst of your dedication to your family.
If you are enjoying these podcasts, please rate, review and subscribe, I am incredibly grateful for those who have done this, become part of the To Be Human Collective and be excited for this informative and passionate podcast with the lovely Andy DuBois.
