Publisher's Summary:
Two sisters vie for a notorious marquess in this historical romance by best-selling author Marion Chesney.
Must one sister suffer in poverty while the other lives in the lap of luxury? This question plagued Harriet Clifton incessantly. Inviting herself to her widowed sister Cordelia's posh London townhouse for the season was surely the only way to meet a suitable partner as well as escape drafty old Pringle House forever.
The vain Cordelia was meanwhile casting her net for the notorious marquess of Arden, a man who would rather court a mistress than wed a wife. Who would have believed that the marquess would succumb to Harriet's countrified charms? Or that Cordelia would stoop quite so low as to try to conquer the marquess at her own sister's expense?

Strange but Good
This is one of Ms Chesney's stranger, more gothic novels. It is slightly skewed in tone, slightly melodramatic, and fraught with the virgin fears of sex. That is not to say it was a bad book, it wasn't, it was actually very interesting. But... It is one of the weird ones that this author occasionally wrote, so reader beware. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what is weird about these books. They are just slightly off. The plot is deceptively simple - in this case, the poor relations invite themselves to Town and make a splash - and the characters are the traditional archetypes: innocent debutante, professional invalid spinster aunt, evil older slutty sister, put-upon spinster companion, and world-weary, hardened rake, but devastatingly attractive hero. Add a Byronic young cousin to the hero and you have your typical Regency cast. But each of the characters seems just a tad skewed either in their reactions to events or In their internal monologues. The heroine is far too gullible, the sister too evil, the companion too cowardly, the aunt too missish, the cousin too melodramatic, and the hero far too cynical. Together it works, but the story is a little too serious, too dark, to be a farce and not enough absurdist to be a dark comedy. It is just awkward enough to be unsettling but not awkward enough to impact the enjoyment of the experience. It was good, very well-written. I do highly recommend this book to all Regency Romance lovers.
Plot driven story with nasty villains and heroes who win win the day!
Harriet is a charming, hard-working heroine who's been living a life of drudgery and destitution, trying to keep herself and her Aunt fed with a vegetable garden, eggs from their chickens and shooting game on her dilapidated country property. The Marquess of Arden and his cousin Bertram stumble upon their home after getting lost on their travels. Arden is very kind to Harriet and her Aunt, and Bertram shows an interest in Harriet. After enjoying a very pleasant visit with lively conversation, Arden leaves them a basket of delicious food and fine wines.
This makes them realize how badly they have it - they are lonely with no visitors and almost starving - they decide to travel to London to show up on the doorstep of Harriet's rich, selfish sister. The sister, Cordelia, is one of the most heinous type of villains. 1) Harriet and her Aunt are under her roof so they can't get away from her cruel treatment and cutting remarks. 2) Sometimes Cordelia pretends to be nice, so her behavior is erratic and confusing.
