“Vous AVEZ raison, nous AVONS chaud car les pellets sont arrivés.”

“You ARE right, we ARE hot because the pellets have arrived.”

You have probably learned that AVOIR means ‘to HAVE’.

Well, rethink your French: here is a list of French expressions with AVOIR – to HAVE normally, where the English translation is actually ‘to BE’.

* avoir X ans …. to be X years old

* avoir chaud …. to be hot/warm[1]

* avoir de la chance, veine, du pot …. to be fortunate, to be lucky

* avoir faim …. to be hungry

* avoir froid …. to be cold[2]

* avoir honte …. to be ashamed

* avoir peur …. to be afraid

* avoir raison …. to be right

* avoir soif …. to be thirsty

* avoir tort …. to be wrong

 

Exercice – Practice

Translate the sentences from one language to the other. From French to English (la version) is easier, from English to French (la thèse) a bit more challenging.

Traduisez les phrases d’une langue à l’autre. Du français en anglais (la version) est plus facile, de l’anglais au français (la thèse) un peu plus difficile.

Français

* Je suis grognon car j’ai chaud, j’ai faim et j’ai soif.

* Ils ont froid l’hiver.

* Vous n’avez pas honte ?

* Est-ce que vous n’avez pas honte ?

* N’avez-vous pas honte ?

English

* I am a grouch because I am hot, I am hungry and I am thirsty.

* They are cold in the winter.

* Aren’t you guys ashamed?
