To Live Terminally: Change your mindset and rediscover life

In my opinion, TW Walsh is one of the most underrated yet influential artists in the indie world.  If you are into indie music then you most likely are listening to something he has touched in some way.  His resume includes the likes of Jimmy Eat World, David Bazan, Sufjan Stevens, Benjamin Gibbard, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Father John Misty, Starflyer 59, and on and on and on and on and…  Tim is creative.  He is experimental.  He is bold and he is ever creating.

In this episode we talk about life.  We talk about his music and most recently we talk about his new book “Coherence.”  It wasn’t enough to just write killer music or record, mix, and/or master some of the greatest around or get into visual arts.  TW Walsh had to write a book and like everything else he’s done, its good.  Actually no, it’s great!  Coherence is a book that needs to be consumed like a fine meal.  Savored and experienced bite by bite.  Coherence is a concentration of ageless wisdom from the Buddhadharma written so one can easily digest and put it into practice.

It’s funny, if you’re like me, you’ve always been nervous to meet someone you’ve admired for so long for fear they’d be some prick or pretentious asshole.  I was really excited for this interview and TW Walsh did not disappoint.  He is a wealth of wisdom and peace and most important TW Walsh is beautiful human.  If you haven’t heard of him, do yourself a favor, listen to his music and read his book.  You’ll love him too.

Welcome to To Live Terminally.  Today we will be talking to a very special guest Mirza Begovic (Beg-o-vich).  I met Mirza backstage at a music venue one rainy night in Ybor City, when our bands were sharing the bill. I was struck by the level of profound wisdom emanating from him.  It was if he had lived four lifetimes in one.  We talked for maybe 30 minutes, but it only took a few moments to know this guy is more than a fellow musician, this guy was a brother.

Mirza is multi instrumentalist as well as a boutique pedal maker.  He is the guitarist and 1/4 of the genius behind the band “Gullwing.”  He's the creative force behind his solo project “Cinema Within” and if that wasn’t impressive enough, he owns and creates boutique guitar pedals and random instruments at “Tone Field FX.”  He is son, a brother, a dedicated husband, and an awesome father of two beautiful kids.

Today, we'll be discussing his life growing up in Bosnia as well as his escape from a genocide hell.  We will also talk about his motivation behind creating music and how there might be reflections his traumatic childhood shaping the dramatic soundscapes.  We talk about pedals and sounds and synesthesia and school and kids and life as well as how he manages to balance all of it.

Mirza is a class-act.  He is young, but he is wise beyond his years.  I was fairly certain I had learned everything there was to know in my 44 years... until this chat.  I hope you enjoy it.  Meet your new brother Mirza.

Have you ever wondered why you do what you do? And more so, does doing what you do bring you any fulfillment or happiness? Are you simply caught in the hamster wheel of waking up to survive yet another day? If so, what makes this ok? You get one life, one moment in time to try and make the best of it. There are no do overs. No second chances. You don’t get a refund for opportunities missed because you were simply treading water. So again, the question remains. Why do you do what you do? Is because you are thriving or because you are just surviving and possibly even slowly dying?

Why are we here on this earth?  If we are only given one life, should that life be filled with experience and wonder or should it just fill the shoes of the person who came before us?  If all the arbitrary systems put in place were to fall what would the point of your life be?  Wouldn’t we be like every other living creature on earth enjoying the day as it presents itself?  Why do we exist?  Are we capable of experiencing life and all that it has to offer while being a cog in the wheel of societal norms? I think not!  In this episode we will discuss the importance of playing in life, not just falling in line as if you exist to keep the system going.  The earth is our playground.  Have you played recently?
