What is Garageband?  Yes, we know it as usually some young teens in a garage banging away and experimenting with music trying to make the dream of becoming rock stars.  But in the digital media world.

Garageband originally released in 2004 by Apple, the application enabled users of all levels to dive in and create music, edit and record audio at all skill levels. This free software comes with the ability to connect instruments, make sound loops, free use of pre-made loops and beats to create all kinds of fun digital media. 

So what about sound editing, for example using Garageband to create, record, and edit podcasts? You’re in luck, this software is perfect for all levels of audio editing whether it’s a podcast or creating simple sound bites for instructional learning.

Just Take the Pic! Camera or Phone for Travel Photography?

It’s that time of year!  Vacations and traveling during the summer break!  So the question is, when you are traveling on family vacations or attending a work conference, which do you prefer to use, a typical point and shoot camera or your smartphone?  As summer comes to a close, this podcast will still touch on some ideology about basic uses of photography from a typical point and shoot camera vs a smart phone.

Just in the last few years, digital photography with the use of smartphones has exploded with sophisticated sensors, intricate AI, powerful lenses, and the convenience of always having it with you.

This episode will cover the pros and cons of using a smartphone vs a dedicated camera such as a DSLR, GoPro, or a mirrorless camera. As well this podcast will talk about a few examples as the host dives into what he uses on his travels and creative journeys.

When we think of creative tools or workflows, we usually think of pencils, markers, whiteboards and paper. However, Apple has always been a company that prides themselves on creating computers and software for creative folks.

Over the last 10 years, the iPad and other tablets have exploded in the mainstream market. Not just for creative digital media folks, but everyone. I think it’s time we look at the iPad specifically and see what it can do and how it can improve workflows among creatives, but also how it can change the workflow of college faculty.

This podcast will dive into a few aspects of how the iPad can improve workflow, especially using creative digital media tools, accessories, and applications that can benefit anyone. I will give my insight and experiences with using the iPad for over 11 years to create not only just digital media but how it benefits my workflow in my daily work environment.

Is a longer podcast episode better? How long should a podcast episode be?  This is a nagging question that keeps a lot of podcasters, creators and online instructors up at night when worrying about the length of their content. 

This could be in the form of a podcast as this episode will primarily touch on, but this can be applied to all aspects of digital media and instructional materials.Join us today, as we briefly touch on some trends and standards when it comes to podcasting or audio content that is used in online delivery. We’ll talk about targeting your audience and understanding that longer podcasts or videos doesn’t mean higher quality of instruction. 

Digital content such as podcasting is not a race, it's unique to your own audience.  There are benefits to shorter episodes and hopefully after this episode you'll have a better understanding and confidence to create your own podcast or video content.

Social media has endless opportunities for educators, we just never thought of it that way. As a tool, it can help students improve digital literacy and critical thinking skills.  Tools such as Instagram can also help promote your class, your college, and yourself as an instructor.

Some obstacles colleges have when dealing with technology is cost, that is the best part of social media, it's free, and a majority of students are already using the most trending and up to date social media apps on their own.  Instagram is one of the most popular social media applications worldwide, so why aren't we taking advantage of this tool and using it to engage, connect, and inspire faculty to create a more interactive learning experience?
