Tobacco lawsuits : NHIS needs to step up preventive care 

담배회사 소송 : 건강보험공단의 예방 관리 강화 필요

The National Health Insurance Service is reportedly moving to file lawsuits against cigarette manufacturers to seek compensation for the expenses incurred by smoking.

At the seminar， the corporation unveiled the findings of clinical research its team has conducted for the past 20 years. The data showed that among men， smokers had a 6.5 times higher risk of developing laryngeal cancer than nonsmokers. The risk was 4.6 times higher for lung cancer and 3.6 times higher for esophageal cancer.

국민건강보험공단이 흡연으로 발생되는 비용에 대한 피해보상을 청구하기 위해 담배회사를 상대로 소송을 준비하고 있는 것으로 전해졌다.

이 세미나에서， 건보공단은 지난 20년 간 실시해온 임상자료 결과를 공개했다. 이 자료에서는 남성들 사이에서 흡연자가 비흡연자보다 후두암 발생 위험이 6.5배 높은 것으로 나타났다. 폐암의 경우， 4.6배 높았고 식도암의 경우， 3.6배 높았다.
