The UK Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Philp of the Conservative Party, has stated that the current Labour government's immigration reforms do not go "nowhere near far enough" and has defended the former Conservative government's Rwanda plan.
On November 18, 2025, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced new, tougher immigration measures, including longer waits for permanent settlement and increased powers to seize assets from illegal migrants.
In response, Philp, the shadow home secretary since November 2024, argued that these changes are merely "little steps in the right direction" but fail to address the core issues of the borders crisis. He reiterated the Conservative Party's belief that the Rwanda plan, which aimed to process asylum seekers in the African nation, was a necessary and potentially effective deterrent that the current government wrongly cancelled.
