In this episode of Beers With Jesus, Todd and Carrie walk through Genesis 22 — the binding of Isaac.

God tells Abraham to take his son, the child of the promise, and offer him as a burnt offering on Mount Moriah. Abraham gets up early, walks three days, binds Isaac, and raises the knife. At the last second God stops him and provides a ram.

They read the chapter in The Message, then look at it through Hebrews 11:17–19 (Abraham believed God could raise the dead). They talk about why this is the climax of Abraham’s story, the striking parallels to Jesus, the meaning of “Jehovah Jireh,” and what it actually looks like to hold the people and things we love with open hands.

Also discussed: Isaac’s age, the geography of Moriah, dying to self, and having an eternal perspective when life doesn’t make sense.

Abraham and Sarah tell Abimelech she’s his sister. God intervenes, Abimelech returns her with gifts, and Abraham prays for the king’s household. Most commentaries call this a lapse of faith. We don’t think the story reads that way. In this episode we walk through Genesis 20, look at Sarah’s age, the timeline, Jewish tradition about her beauty, and why this episode is more about God dealing with a pagan king than about Abraham messing up. Todd and Carrie crack open Genesis 19 and immediately discover why this story rarely gets the full treatment in church. Carrie goes in completely blind and reads the chapter from The Message—Lot, the angels, the mob, the daughters, the destruction, the pillar of salt, and the cave. Todd tries to keep up while they talk through hospitality culture, the “cries of the victims,” why Peter calls Lot righteous, what actually happened to Lot’s wife, and why the whole city gets wiped out.
