Happy National Wine Day! Tonight we are tasting the 2018 Chateau Dereszla Dry Tokaj from Hungary. Tokaj is a blend of 85% Furmint, 11% Harshlevelu, and 4% Muscat.
While Tokaj Aszu is a world-renowned sweet wine, this particular Tokaj is dry and made without the addition of the aszu paste, made from the Botrysized aszu grapes, where all of the sugar is concentrated to make Tokaj Aszu.
While you would usually find the Puttnayos levels (a measure of sweetness) on the labels of Tokaj Aszu, there are no levels on this label because this wine is bone dry, with jaw numbing acidity and a full body.
Tokaj is a medium-bodied, dry, white wine that boast hints of honey, apple, and almond on the nose, and minerals and luscious apples on the palate. At $16.50, this is a great value wine to be paired with either Pate or some Bleu Cheese.
