  • Andrew Nicewander: Tolkien and Religious Trauma

In this interview, Nick speaks with Andrew Nicewander about experiencing religious abuse and trauma, Tolkien’s own religious trauma, deconstruction, and hope for a better (a)religious future.

Andrew is a depressive castaway loved by his wife and children, who strives to live simply and softly. In real life, he is a seemingly mild-mannered software engineer who nerds out at Imaginative Lore and loves the Wild Wood; but in his heart he's an Ent with a busted hip who wrestles with his Maker. He's a recent graduate from Trinity Anglican Seminary (MAR, 2024) having written a thesis with the paragraphic title of "Shattered Souls and the Re-Enchanting Magic of Myth – The Role that J.R.R. Tolkien and His Projects of Eucatastrophe and Sub-Creation Can Play in the Healing of the Church-Traumatized"

  • Dr. Robin Anne Reid: Tolkien, Atheist/Agnostic/Animist Fan Experiences, and Beyond

In this first official (kind of) Tolkien Pop! podcast interview, Nick shares an interview he did with Dr. Robin Anne Reid that was originally recorded for the Interchanging Melodies Online Summit held in 2023 that was hosted by Tripp Fuller from Homebrewed Christianity podcast and the Process This Substack.

In the interview, Robin shares about their Tolkien experience as a scholar and fan and the project that she was and is working on, i.e., Atheist, Agnostic, and Animist experiences in Tolkien fandom and scholarship. There's also a lot more fun that is had, including talks on fan fiction and sexy Frodo?

Dr. Robin Anne Reid retired from Texas A&M University-Commerce in May 2020 and moved to Bellingham, Washington in October 2020. She is enjoying retirement which is allowing her to finish the scholarly and writing projects she never had time for before. Her current major projects include a recent anthology Queer Approaches to Tolkien, co-edited with Christopher Vaccaro and Stephen Yandell, as well as an anthology on racisms on Tolkien (under contract with McFarland). When those are submitted, she will begin work on her monograph about atheist, agnostic, and animist readers of Tolkien's legendarium. She runs the Tolkien Studies Area for the national Popular Culture Conference. After leaving Facebook in 2022, she set up a Substack newsletter, Writing from Ithilien, which she is using to post about Tolkien scholarship:

  • Tolkien Pop! & Tolkien Heads at Theology Beer Camp

    Hello There Tolkien Poppers!

Today I am excited to share with you the first audio offering from Tolkien Pop! This is all thanks to my friend Josh Noel, who is the founder and one of the many hosts at Systematic Geekology and The Whole Church podcasts who was kind enough to record this conversation and provide the audio. In this conversation, I talk with Josh along with Will and TJ, who are also hosts at SG and TWC as well as Ryan Dose from Across the Bifrost: The Mighty Thor Podcast about what Theology Beer Camp: The Return of the God-pods will look like this October. There’s only one week left to get early bird tickets before prices go up, so don’t forget to use code TOLKIENRING at checkout to get $25 off your ticket: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/theology-camp-the-return-of-the-god-pods-tickets-824208298207

We discuss our cultivated fellowship through our mutual friendship with Tripp Fuller, who has run Theology Beer Camp for almost a decade now, our past experiences at previous Theology Beer Camps, and what we anticipate for this year. All of us presented and ran the Geek Stage at TBC 2023, where we had an absolute nerdy blast with talks on Tolkien, Doctor Who, and Star Wars.

These pics are just a small portion of the trouble we got into at Beer Camp last year.

I won’t keep you any longer. Enjoy the our conversation and I hope to see you this October!

If you love coffee - particularly nerdy coffee then you should check out Comics On Coffee! They’re an amazing specialty coffee company that roasts great coffees such as Batman: The Dark Knight Roast and The Lord of the Rings: The Baggins Blend. Pick up some geeky jitter juice: https://comicsoncoffees.com/tolkienpop or use code TOLKIENPOP at checkout!
