Episode #86     Tom Naughton believes “you’ve been fed a load of bologna.” The Fat Head director began filming his movie as a comedic response to the national phenomenon Supersize Me, but soon realized how everything he thought he knew about nutrition was wrong. Extensive research and interviews with medical professionals inspired Tom to change his way of living. He and his kids moved out of L.A. and started a sustainable farm to supply their new low-carb way of life. Today on What The Fat, Dr. Ryan Lowery interviews Tom on his health-journey, the inspiration behind Fat Head, and his latest piece of work: Fat Head Kids.   Enjoy the show!   Takeaways There is no one-size-fits-all diet, but we do know the current U.S. government low-fat diet recommendation is wildly misleading. Research paper after research paper have proven that high-fat diets are not linked to obesity or heart disease; however, these ideas are still taught to many Americans. It is this lack of true knowledge on diet and health that has lead to the overconsumption of sugar and increased incidence of obesity and obesity-related illnesses.         Links/Resources   http://www.fathead-movie.com/ https://www.fatheadkidsmovie.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fathead.movie/ Youtube:  https://www.youtube.com/user/fatheadmovie Twitter: https://twitter.com/tomdnaughton Show Notes: What inspired Tom Naughton growing up? 1:08 The transition from stand-up comedy to managing a sustainable farm 2:23 Building healthy eating habits in kids 7:40 When Tom started challenging nutritional standards 11:21 Dealing with hate comments 17:35 The lipid hypothesis and cutting out sugar 20:38 Current diet and how it’s changed over time 23:58 Fat Head Kids: Stuff about diet and health I wish I knew when I was your age 29:53 Where to find the book and movie 35:09 What Tom considers success 36:10 New projects in 2019 36:57 Where to find Tom and keep up-to-date 38:53   Tweetable quotes “We don’t aim for perfection. We aim to keep them [the children] on a good diet most of the time and it’s working.”   “I think I’ve given them the tools to make the smart decisions and they are kids. They aren’t always going to make the smart decision, but heck I’m a 60-year-old-man and I don’t always make the smart decision.”   “Once you know what certain foods do to you, it becomes increasingly difficult to make the bad decision and do it on purpose, because you know what you’re doing to yourself.”   “I don’t want the U.S. government or any other organization declaring here is the one diet for everyone, because there’s no such thing as the one diet that’s correct for everyone.”   “If you can’t explain this to a 6th-grader, you don’t really know it.”   If you like today’s episode, subscribe on Apple Podcasts at What The Fat and leave us a 5-star, positive review.
