Ep. 4 - Welcome to the Jungle and Learning Note for Note
GUNS N' ROSES! Zach breaks down how he plays the intro to "Welcome to the Jungle", which sounds phenominal and full! Bhloom and Kanem work to follow along and learn. How do you play the intro to "Welcome to the Jungle"? Do you think we've got it? You gonna play it the Tonal Distancing way now?

We talk about the importance of learning the source material lick for lick, riff for riff. For us, the material has to be challenging and push you to another level; iconic and so well pronounced in the audience's mind that it would be rude not to play it right; meaningful to yourself, if it speaks to your soul, you have to learn it; finally, if you are hired to do the song the way it is, you better play what they paid for! Not everything is worth it, but what songs, riffs, or solos have to be learned bit by bit for you?

We get zen on guitar. We go through what riffs, solos, licks provide a re-centering to ourselves, our lives, and our playing. Share with us what grounds you with your playing!

System of a Down is a heavy hitting metal band that if you play guitar, and play a little metal you probably have heard of. Daron Malakian (the guitarist) was an influence on Bhlooms playing and while most people probably have heard of "BYOB" and "Chop Suey!", we go into some deeper cuts and go through "Attack" and "Tentative". What System of a Down song is your favorite?

What is your favorite amp and cab combo? How much are you willing to spend to get the ultimate rig setup? Maybe the better call is to get the Axe Fx by Fractal Audio? Zach and Bhloom are avid users, and like my Axe Fx guitarists, they cannot stop raving about it. Out of the Tonal Distancing crew, Zach was the first to take the step toward going without a traditional amp, so he guides us through how he ended up with the Axe Fx and why it might be a good idea for you too! What is your amp set up? Are you using a modeller or are you still plugging into a 4x12 (or other more manageable amp)?

What's in your rig? Tonal Distancing with our guest Nick Fiorentino go into each of our rigs and a few favorites we have. Nick goes through some fantastic overdrive pedals including the Tim and the 3rd Power Kitchen! Prabhu shows us a favorite bass plug in that brings some grit to the low end in a mix. And obviously Prabhu and Zach talk about their precious Fractal Axe Fx and all of the goodies, going through presets, how to create unique sounds using the blocks. Zach breaks down some of the goodness of his lead tones in the Axe, which includes a sneaky slapback delay! Kanem keeps it simple, and goes with the classic but extremely versitle Cry Baby Wah.
