On this episode of Toni Unleashed the podcast Toni and Emily are talking about something fairly controversial. That is starting to understand how to read your dog's food label, what to look out for, and a deeper dive into some scarier ingredients that are actually allowed in your dog's food.

• Emily and Toni talk about what should be your first couple of ingredients, meat should always be listed as the first ingredient, in fact the first three ingredients should be meat unless it is a single sourced protein diet. This excludes the words: Animal protein, protein, meat. You want the meat content to be strictly identified as an animal source.
• Secondly, Toni and Emily talk about ingredients that they recommend avoiding that are really common in commercial diets: Contain wheat, corn, soy, chemical preservatives and food coloring, animal digest, and what meat meal really is.
• Finally Toni and Emily talk about all the chemicals that are commonly found in commercial dog food outside of just the ingredient panel. BHT, BHA, Ethoxyquin. Toni talks about how common these chemicals used to be in dog foods, and how they are linked to cancer in people and animals. She mentioned you see them less and less but they are still in some mass produced foods.

Toni and Emily bring back Rebecca Rose to talk about Prebiotics, Digestive Enzymes and gut health. Today we will dive into the topic of Gut health for your dogs. 70% of the immune system is housed in the gut, so we need to support the gut for healthy and sick dogs. We can only partially cover this topic in one episode, not even two. We could have an episode  just on probiotics, even prebiotics and their benefits. That is  We will have Rebecca Rose from In clover back on our show to discuss gut health more with us next week. In the next episode we will dive more into the science behind adding prebiotics and digestive enzymes. So many ailments and issues we see in dogs today can be linked to the gut. Some things we are going to cover in this episode are: Diet change, Ways to repair the gut, and identifying the problem. 

• First Emily and Toni talk about identifying the problem and whether or not your dog has GI symptoms before or after eating. This is relatively easy to identify. Do they have gas or throw up on an empty stomach? Then we might want to add some soothing supplements or food to your dog's diet to soothe the gut lining. Toni and Emily expand on what to look for and how to approach the problem your pet might be experiencing.
• Then Toni and Emily begin to talk about the difference between pro and prebiotics and why they might help your dog with these issues!! There are different supplements to add and ways to repair the gut through supplements and diet.Probiotics are live microorganisms that exist in your stomach. They are the good bacterias that help keep the harmful bacteria from causing harm to your dog's system.
• Finally Toni and Emily talk about diet change and how feeding your dog can help or hurt the gut. Any food options that are higher in bioavailability, aka less processed will be easier for the body to absorb and put less stress on these organs that we have talked about to digest and break down.

In this episode we have a resident expert and VP of sales: Heather Hickey, here to speak about air-dried food options for dogs and cats and why it is an excellent option for your pets! If you have been following the podcast closely, you have already listened to Emily and Toni’s take on air-dried food and how we recommend it to our customers. They will dive deeper into this subject matter and learn more about the benefits of a non-heat-processed diet. 

• Heather talks about what air drying is. The machines they have at their facility and how it slowly and carefully takes a complete and balanced diet, and uses their drying racks in an advanced facility to create a shelf stable product, without over processing the nutrients.
• Heather then talks about their attention to detail when it comes to sourcing. Because ZiwiPeak is located in New Zealand they have the ability to source their meats from the best farmers in the world. All three women then talk about the importance of protein, and ingredient sourcing. What goes into the food really is what makes it high quality.

There are different categories of feeding these days. Today we will talk about air dried food. It is definitely a niche category of feeding. We want to shed some light on it today with you. This episode won't be super long, but we will have a GREAT follow up interview with the leading air dried food in the industry. 

• Emily and Toni like air dried food so much because of its palatability. Almost all of our pickiest eaters will enjoy air dried food. It is so palatable because of the process, it goes into a drying chamber that circulates air and as such, retains more nutritional value, moisture and texture compared to other kibble processes. These foods also typically are limited ingredients and contain higher meat value.
• Toni’s favorite thing from a retail perspective about air dried, is that 1. It doesn’t need to be refrigerated, so it doesn't take up space away from raw food, supplements or bones 2. It is shelf stable with a high digestibility rate, and nutritional value. We will ALWAYS recommend feeding this food with added hydration, and that can be with: Bone broth, goats milk, water, etc. This will increase the palatability even further, ensuring your dog is hydrated.

In this episode, Toni talks about a couple of random customer experiences she has had last year. The interactions Toni talks about are with two different customers and their relationship with their vets, raw food, and supplements. Toni mentions her recommendations with each customer, why she is making these recommendations as well as customer feedback. This episode Emily takes the lead talking about her involvement in the non-profit organization called: Save A Friend PR. She has been a highly active member and instrumental in finding homes for so many homeless dogs on the island in Pittsburgh PA. She talks about why working with a rescue is so important to her, and all the misery her team sees on the island after the many hurricanes. 

• Emily talks about how she got involved with this rescue group. The people that she works with, and how their relationship has grown and developed over the years. She mentions the importance of getting along with the people you work with in the rescue world, and why this team works so well together.

The group discusses the various ways in which the sanctuary has helped animals, as well as the challenges they have faced over the years. They also talk about the importance of volunteering and how everyone can help make a difference. The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is a place that is really powerful and moving. It is a place where you can laugh, cry, and be awed all at the same time. The Sanctuary is located in Utah and is definitely worth a visit if you are ever in the area. They offer guided tours as well as the opportunity to do volunteer work and even spend the night with some of the animals. We spent a couple of nights at the Sanctuary and our goal was to take home the dogs that either get overlooked because of their appearance or have had some previous trials and tribulations. We wanted to use our experience to actually help where others may not be able to in a short period of time. And we were definitely successful! We had an amazing time and we were able to provide a loving home for some dogs that really needed it. The speakers discuss their recent visit to an animal shelter, where they cleaned cages and played with the animals. They talk about how important it is to take home some of the less adoptable animals, in order to give them a chance at finding a forever home. They also talk about their experience at the cat room, where they were surprised by how loving and affectionate the cats were. They encourage listeners to adopt animals from shelters, and mention that Healthy Pet Products will give a free bag of food to anyone who adopts a dog or cat from this organization.
