  • Episode 92: 1988 Classic Hardcovers: The Final Chapter with Tony Whitt
When Virgin publishing purchased WH Allen, the hardcover books were losing money.  In June, 1988 it was decided to stop publishing cloth bound Dr. Who books. The final novel, “The Smugglers,” was limited to 1000 copies.  That makes it extremely hard to find. The other titles were random.  153 hardcovers were published from 1974-1988 including reprints. Owning a whole set is a lofty goal. I am missing 4 titles as of now.  Loch Ness Monster 1st edition, The Three Doctors 2nd edition, Dinosaur Invasion 2nd edition, and The Time Warrior.  I doubt I will find them.  Joining me is Tony Whitt, host and producer of The Target Book Club Podcast.  Keep Collecting!

  • Episode 88: 1987 Classic Hardcovers with Tony Whitt
We continue our coverage of the Classic Dr. Who hardcovers by WH Allen with the year 1987. The company is being sold to Virgin books and sales are not going well. WH Allen is trying hard to liquidate assets and sell as many books in this final full year of publication. The books released are in a random order with only one Sylvester McCoy story making it to hardcover.  Tony Whitt, the host of the Target Book Club podcast, talks about the prose and story of each title citing reviews from his show.  With My Time and the Most Outrageous Offer, this will be a fun ride!

  • Episode 65: Classic Hardcovers of 1982 with Tony Whitt
The Universal Tandem company’s imprint of WH Allen produced 9 hardcover books in 1982. The print runs are winding down and this money-losing venture continues and will continue for 5 more years. Some titles are old while only doing one Peter Davison story. Join me and Tony Whitt (Doctor Who Target Book Club Podcast) and we share the stories behind these elusive and highly collectible books!

  • Episode 54: Dr. Who Classic Hardcovers year 6 (1979) with Tony Whitt
1979 was a tough year for the world with high inflation and gasoline prices doubling!   It was a good year for Dr. Who.  Tom Baker’s Doctor in his 2nd year in the USA and now rural parts of Canada. WH Allen decided to reprint 1 book and print 8 new books this year.  Not even keeping pace with 1 per month. Nelson-Doubleday works with Pinnacle to produce a book club hardcover of 3 stories only available in the USA. Tony Whitt and I go through the list in publication order with Tony giving perspective on the actual stories. Larry talks about book conditions and values. These books are very expensive to procure. This will also be the last year you see a cover by Chris Achilleos.

  • Episode 49: A New Dodo Chaplet! with Lauren Cornelius
The late Jackie Lane (1941-2021) portrayed the character Dorothea “Dodo” Chaplet in Dr. Who from “The Massacre” part 4 to “The War Machines” Part 2. She would never attend more than one Dr. Who convention and did not participate in any DVD commentary. Big Finish announced that a new actor will play Dodo Chaplet, and that is the great Lauren Cornelius! She is my guest today along with Collection Protection and the Most Outrageous Offer!.

    • Episode 48: Dr. Who Classic Hardcovers Year 4 (1977) with Tony Whitt
In 1977, 17 hardcover novels were published for Dr. Who under the Allan Wingate imprint. This will be the final year for Allan Wingate and the last year for most reprints. Some of the books listed are only rumored to exist so we still seek proof of life. While obtaining all 17 from this year are very difficult and expensive, some collectors will pay to get them. Join me and Professor of Target Bookology, Tony Whitt (host and producer of the Dr. Who Target Book Club Podcast, for a deep dive into these books. While I give the economics, Tony tells you if it is worth reading.

      • Episode 40: Classic Dr. Who Hardcovers Year 3 (1976) with Tony Whitt
Wyndham publishers put out a total of 4 hardcover books in 1974 and 1975 using the Allan Wingate imprint. They increased that number to 10 in 1976. These hardcover releases mirror the Target paperback imprints exactly. The growing popularity of Dr. Who in 1976 is clearly evident. The demand for these titles in hardcover is shown by the high prices these are demanding even in ex-library condition.  Join me and my guest, Tony Whitt (Target Book Club Podcast), as we do a deep dive into the hardcovers of 1976.

        • Episode 38: The Doctor and the Enterprise Special Joint Episode
How do you celebrate the landmark episode of a podcast you’ve been doing for years now that talks about Target books? Talk about something entirely different! This time, our three-person discussion panel of Tony Whitt, Alyson Fitch-Safreed, and Dalton Hughes is joined by friend of the podcast Larry VanMersbergen for a special bumper volume (hey, that’s a Target reference) for a joint episode with his own show, THE DOCTOR WHO COLLECTORS PODCAST. And what are we discussing? Only the first major crossover between our favorite show and another franchise (and no, I don’t mean the DARK SHADOWS/VAMPIRELLA comic, either): THE DOCTOR AND THE ENTERPRISE!
The not-at-all Target book we will be covering in this episode can be found in four parts (text only) starting at the first link below, or in PDF version at the second link:

The first appearance of this story. R&R issue 13 (1981)

2nd Printing of the standalone edition, date unknown. Free publication
Elusive 3rd printing with art by Gail Bennett 1983. Very hard to find
First printing commercially with permission in Enterprise Magazine issue 1 – in four parts across the first four issues.
Issue #2 with part 2. No higher res available. Hard to find.
          Issue #3 with part 3.
Issue #4 with first photo cover. Part 4 is included here.
The first illegal commercial publication. Done without permission of the author. New Media Publications 1985
Rare 2nd edition, again without author’s consent. Date unknown, hard to find
3rd printing from New Media Press, still illegal and without permission of the author. 1986
A badly edited 4th edition by Pioneer books. All proper Star Trek and Dr. Who names changed but content still published without the Author’s permission.
The only fanzine to reprint “The Doctor and the Lieutenant” The racy sequel. This underground fanzine was published in 1982. Very hard to find. I have one copy.
Sample artwork from “The Blue Guardian” #13. Interesting how this story was in #13 of both fanzines.

The rest of the images are the artwork from the First illegal printing. The artist is Tom Holtkamp and you can still buy the originals on ebay for $25 each.
