  • Women in Medicine: Why We Burn Out and How We Stay

What happens to the women who give medicine everything they have? We ask two emergency physicians, Dr. Jenny Castillo Cato and Dr. Placid Bone. Placid’s book, The Seven Stages of a Girl’s Life, takes its structure from the stages of labor and follows a woman from birth to a final stage she much prefers to the word “menopause.” She also argues that emergency medicine can be an ideal specialty for women wanting a family. Jenny walks us through why endometriosis can still take years to diagnose and what one researcher is learning from symptoms women can log themselves. She also describes burning out twice, leaving academia after COVID, and a job offer she turned down during a year away.

As a resident, Jenny had to tell a family their daughter died, and what they did next left her stunned. Years later, a radio story put her right back at that bedside. Alya shares a similar night from training, including the person who approached her in the waiting room. We then talk about narrative medicine as a way to process those stories, the power of a physician’s words to shape how patients experience illness, and the sense of wonder that keeps many of us in emergency and hospital medicine.

    About the Guests:

Dr. Jenny Castillo Cato is an emergency physician with 25 years in medicine. She spent much of her career in academic emergency medicine in New York, including as an associate professor at Columbia University, where she taught, researched, and built well-being initiatives. She now practices part-time in urgent care and writes about women's health and FemTech, including an article on endometriosis for the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

Dr. Placid Bone is an emergency physician who works per diem at several hospitals. She studied Ayurvedic medicine and wrote Nina: The Seven Stages of a Girl's Life, a book for girls that moves through birth, breast, bleeding, sex, pregnancy, motherhood, and wise woman. Together, Dr. Castillo Cato and Dr. Bone co-host the Medicine, Motherhood & Metaphysics podcast.

  • Childhood, Psychedelics, and the Brain’s Windows for Learning

Children explore the world with a wide, open attention, while adults narrow that attention toward their immediate goals. Developmental psychologist Alison Gopnik calls it lantern awareness and spotlight awareness, and frames childhood as an evolutionary season of exploration before the ‘exploit’ mode of adulthood. We came home from UC Berkeley's States of Consciousness Conference talking about her conversation with neuroscientist Dr. Gül Dölen, and what it means for development when a child doesn't feel safe enough to keep exploring and has to narrow their attention too soon.

From there, we connect childhood learning to critical periods, the limited windows when the brain is unusually open to change, and to Dölen's work suggesting some psychedelics can reopen a version of that window in adult animals. We also talk about her octopus research, how psychedelic, mystical, and religious experiences can share some of a child's wider awareness, and why an open window is only an opportunity. Researchers are now exploring whether pairing a psychedelic session with intensive rehabilitation could help recovery after a stroke, and that work is investigational and not standard of care. In our experience, what turns openness into lasting change is everything around it: preparation, a safe and supportive setting, and the integration work that comes after.

This episode discusses psychedelics and related research for informational purposes. It is not medical advice.

  • Not Feeling Like Yourself Anymore? The Truth About Perimenopause, Menopause, and the Female Brain and Body with Dr. Liz Lyster, MD

Dr. Lyster brings decades of experience in women's health and a particular focus on helping women navigate hormonal changes in midlife.

In this episode, she joins us to explore the critical questions women face in their 40s and 50s. We discuss why perimenopause starts years before the last period, the science behind menopause brain fog, and how estrogen and progesterone interact with the brain to trigger sudden anxiety, insomnia, or ADHD-like symptoms.

We navigate confusing territory—including bioidentical HRT, libido, and metabolic changes—to ask an important question: Are we treating psychiatric symptoms without recognizing the underlying hormonal transition? While hormones don’t explain everything, the real conversation is how the brain, body, and life stages interact.

Menopause is a complex transition involving sexuality, identity, and mental health—and women deserve better conversations about it. Join Too Curious MDs as we explore the intersection of integrative health, neuroscience, and the human experience, because sometimes the most important medical question is the one nobody thought to ask.

    About the Guest:

Elizabeth Lyster, MD, MPH, is a board-certified OB/GYN and women's midlife health expert. Earning her MD from UC Irvine and an MPH from UCLA, she helps women navigate changes in energy, sleep, and body composition. She practices in the San Francisco Bay Area (as well as online) and is the bestselling author of Dr. Liz's Easy Guide to Menopause and Go for GREAT: Dr. Liz's Guide to Thrive at Every Age.

  • Discovering the Alchemy of Story in the Body with Dr. Gina Dang, DAIM

Gina and I met in the healing world around Pasadena. She defines liberatory embodiment as work centered on the energy body, the site of transformation, moving toward the rhythms of a sovereign life. Her guiding line: knowing is not healing. Patients aren’t asked to retell anything — the work happens on the table.
The hour is surprisingly clinical. She trained in a Japanese-style program long practiced by blind practitioners, a detail that hit home, since her grandfather was blinded in the war. She reads tongue, pulse and abdomen, tracing channels to organs. Emotions have direction: anger rises, joy expands, grief dissipates, fear climbs the spine. Yin and yang are forces in constant exchange, not fixed opposites.
She saw damp, cold presentations in Oregon; in LA, nearly everyone arrives with a red tongue tip. One case, a fast-talking creative with reflux and rib pain, had a red tongue but deep, hidden pulses — Gina Dang is part of the ecosystem of healers working with clients at Pala Medicine, integrating ketamine journeys with embodiment and awareness through coaching and acupuncture.

    Stay curious.

    About the Guest:
Dr. Gina Dang is a liberatory embodiment guide and licensed acupuncturist blending somatic trauma work, Taoist alchemy and anthropology, studied at UC Berkeley before a Japanese-style acupuncture master’s and doctorate. She practiced in Oregon before moving to LA County, offering in-home acupuncture, coaching and group work, and writes Auric Minority.

  • Why Is the Hardest Part of Psychedelic Medicine Not the Molecule?

When I used sub-anesthetic ketamine in pediatrics for years, no one blinked. The moment I brought the same molecule to mental health, the stigma arrived, and that gap is really what this episode is about. Nick Nowak walked me through the machinery that sits between a promising psychedelic and a patient who could use it. He explained why a background in compounding pharmacy, where almost nothing is FDA approved and everything lives in the space between state and federal law, turns out to be useful training for this moment. We talked about the pharmacology that breaks the usual rules, where a medicine can clear the body in hours yet leave an effect that lasts far longer, and why that makes these treatments less about the molecule and more about the container around it. We got into the parts nobody puts on a slide: sourcing and safety, credentialing and training, coverage and aftercare, and the veterans who travel abroad for treatment and come home with little follow-up. Nick is careful and pragmatic throughout, less interested in hype than in whether we can build this responsibly. On Too Curious MDs, that is the honest conversation we came for. Stay curious.

    About the Guest:

Nick Nowak, PharmD, is a board-certified pharmacist who describes himself as a clinician first. He began his career in compounding pharmacy, where the interplay of state and federal rules shaped how he sees medicine, and he has since worked across emergency and critical care, including as a contractor with the U.S. Air Force, and in digital health. He founded Meeko Health, a nationwide psychedelic provider network with a national care protocol, which has since been sunset. Today he works at the intersection of health technology and psychedelics: he sits on the board of the Pearl Institute, supports business development for SoundSelf, advises the National Psychedelic Workforce Registry, and stewards the referral network Mind Shift Collective.

  • Can Your Fingertips Reveal What Is Happening Inside Your Brain?

For most of medical history, we have asked patients to tell us how their brains feel, and then tried to read between the lines. Dr. Mark Tommerdahl offered us a different starting point: a way to measure it. He explained how Brain Gauge uses precisely controlled vibrations on two fingertips to track the building blocks of information processing, things like lateral inhibition, plasticity, and timing, that sit underneath memory, focus, and pain. We talked about why the brain behaves like one connected, fractal system, so a short tactile test can reveal patterns that a structural scan can miss. He shared what he has seen in concussion and recovery, in chronic pain, in aging, and in the difference between a distracted brain and a rested one. What stayed with us is his framing of the patient as an athlete in training rather than a passive case, someone who can watch their own numbers and ask why last night's sleep changed today's score. On Too Curious MDs, that is exactly the kind of curiosity we love to follow. Stay curious.

    About the Guest:

Dr. Mark Tommerdahl is a biomedical engineer, neuroscientist, and longtime professor at the University of North Carolina, where he has spent his career studying how populations of neurons interact across the cortex. He earned his B.S. in biology at Davidson College and his M.S. and Ph.D. in biomedical engineering and mathematics at the University of North Carolina, with early research supported by the NIH. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications on cortical dynamics, sensory processing, plasticity, and pain. That research led to Brain Gauge, the quantitative sensory testing tool built by his company, Cortical Metrics, to assess aspects of brain function. His students know him as Dr. T.

  • How can Music and Sound be the "Hidden Therapist" in Psychedelic Healing? with Shane Aspegren

The track at the end of the episode "Temple Garden Stream" by Shane Aspegren is available here: https://shaneaspegren.bandcamp.com/album/four-bowls-the-high-desert-field-recordings-in-northern-new-mexico

In this episode, we explore sound as medicine with Shane Aspegren, who spent three decades as a professional musician before his creative and healing practices merged. He tells us how a dark night of the soul pushed him deeper into sound just as he burned out on music, and how being of service became its own form of healing.

From there the conversation opens into the mechanics. Shane walks us through the layers sound works on at once: the auditory and meditative, the brainwave entrainment of binaural beats, and the somatic layer where bowls rest on the body and stored stress starts to move. He explains why he plays for what sound evokes on its own rather than to manufacture emotion, why he leans toward music-led work at higher doses and vibration at lower ones, and why silence is the ground the rest appears on. We bring in the research we are watching, from music as psychedelic therapy's hidden therapist to the EEG work at our center, and we come back to relationship, community, and the difference between collecting experiences and actually integrating them.

    - - - - -

    About the Guest:

Shane Aspegren is a somatic sound facilitator, embodied integration coach, and the founder of ONDO, a Los Angeles based holistic sound practice. A musician and multidisciplinary artist for more than thirty years, he has recorded and toured internationally as a drummer and percussionist, including work with Bright Eyes, and co-founded the band The Berg Sans Nipple. He grew up in Nebraska, spent years living in Europe and then Hong Kong, and now works out of Los Angeles.

He collaborates with Dr. Suraiya Rahman at Pala Medicine in Pasadena as the somatic sound facilitator for ketamine sessions, leads group sound baths and one-on-one sessions, and is launching an ongoing somatic integration circle.

  • How Patients Mask and Unmask their Mental Health Conditions in Depression, ADHD, and Generational Trauma

In this episode I talk with Felicia Johnson about what thirty years of depression actually looked like from the inside, and about the moment it started to lift. Felicia describes the daily, sometimes hourly, suicidal ideation she assumed was simply how life felt, the school that wanted her tested for ADHD in the fourth grade, and the parents who declined because she was clearly a bright child. That single decision shaped the next twenty-five years: attention differences went untreated, boredom read as defiance, and depression became the diagnosis that stuck.

We trace the family line backward together, from her mother's illness and substance use to a great-grandfather who survived homelessness at thirteen and passed his hardness down through three generations, and we talk about what it means to grieve someone you lost long before they died. Felicia also walks through her treatment history honestly and without overclaiming: she describes ketamine quieting the ideation enough for her to function, TMS easing the depression enough to see underneath it, and neurofeedback finally making her attention visible to her. What emerges is not a story about being cured but about moving from surviving to thriving, and about the one thing she wants clinicians to ask themselves. Do people trust me enough to take off the mask?

    - - - - -

    About the Guest:

Felicia Johnson is a mental health advocate and online creator who has spent years sharing her healing journey publicly so that fewer people have to go through theirs alone. Known online as Fle, she grew up in a small Northern California town, came out young, and lived with depression and undiagnosed ADHD from childhood, finding her first real community on the early internet and later among friends who shared her curiosity.

She has been in some form of mental health treatment since she was fourteen. Her care now includes ketamine-assisted therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and neurofeedback at ShaMynds Healing Center. Off camera she streams, cross-stitches, and is building her third mobile game. She speaks about mental illness plainly and without polish, which is exactly what makes her worth listening to.

  • What Do We Really Know About Psychedelic Safety? with Dr. Kelan Thomas

We came into this conversation expecting to talk about safety, and left thinking about humility. Kelan Thomas has spent years studying the pharmacology behind psychedelics, and what struck us most is how often the loudest fears (serotonin syndrome, for one) turn out to be less clear-cut than the headlines suggest, while the quieter questions (what daily microdosing does over years, what a receptor signal linked to heart valves really means) stay genuinely open.

We talk about where ketamine's real risks appear and where standard therapeutic dosing looks low-risk, why the length of an experience may carry the length of its benefit, and how rapport, set, and setting can shape an outcome as much as any molecule. Kelan keeps returning to a harm-reduction frame: education over prohibition, informed consent, and the honesty to say we don't know yet. None of this is medical advice, and that's part of the point. It's an invitation to stay curious about the questions we haven't answered.

    - - - - -

    About the Guest:

Kelan Thomas, PharmD, is a psychiatric pharmacist and professor at Touro University California, where his work focuses on psychopharmacology and the safety science behind psychedelic and psychiatric medicine. He trained in Cynthia Kuhn's psychopharmacology lab at Duke, with further training across UCSF, Michigan, and USC. He has published review papers examining serotonin-syndrome risk and the 5-HT2B receptor question tied to microdosing and cardiac safety, and he testified before the Oakland City Council on decriminalization. He approaches this field the way he talks about it: intellectually playful, literary, and humble about the limits of what the research can currently say.

A second conversation with Kelan, on music as pharmacology, is already in the works.

  • What If Your Whole Life Was Decided by Age 8? Unlocking the Subconscious with Laura Hanson

In this episode we followed our curiosity into one of the most fascinating questions in medicine: how much of who a child becomes is shaped before they can even remember it? Dr. Laura Hanson has spent about thirty years working with children's brains, and she walks us through her model of how the subconscious mind forms from the womb through early childhood, and why she treats that window as so formative. We talk about what a 19-channel QEEG brain map actually shows, how she uses neurofeedback to train patterns beneath conscious awareness, and how retained reflexes and today's screen habits shape a child's attention.

What we appreciated is that Hanson does not frame any of this as a single fix. Her approach moves across the mechanical, the chemical, and the brain itself, and she is honest that the biggest changes come when families commit to all three over time. As with everything on this show, we are sharing a practitioner's lens to think with, not a diagnosis or a promise, and there is a lot here worth sitting with. Stay curious.

    About the Guest:

Dr. Laura Hanson has spent roughly thirty years working with children, and some adults, through neurofeedback and biofeedback. She uses 19-channel QEEG brain mapping and runs Connect My Brain, where her team builds individualized programs for brain development and attention.

She also provides chiropractic care and hosts her own podcast focused on children's brains. Her work centers on the idea that the brain can keep changing, at any age, given the right input and consistency.
