Interview: Mike Martz

I am EXTREMELY LUCKY to have a former Super Bowl Winning Coach/Offensive Coordinator, Mike Martz join me today on the Too Tall Sports Podcast. Mike is from South Dakota but truly grew up in San Diego. We discuss his playing days as a Tight End in College. He spent a long time coaching College Football, most notably at Arizona State in the "Pac-10".

Mike got his first big break with the LA Rams in the early 90's and then eventually went on to coach them in St. Louis as well. We discuss what it was like to coach guys on the "Greatest Show on Turf" like: Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Az Hakim, Ricky Proehl, Torry Holt, and the new Isaac Bruce. Lots of great stories there with those guys.

His thoughts on Andy Reid and his relationship and respect for him as a coach.

Playing against Tom Brady in the Super Bowl.

We touch on some new age quarterbacks that he likes as well.

"Too Sense" on MLB finally paying for Minor League Housing:

I have a lot of energy today after the Dodgers came back and won the other night but we still have more baseball to play...

My big topic today is the fact the the always slow moving, Major League Baseball, has decided to start paying for housing accommodations for minor leaguers while in season. This is a huge move as it has become well documented that minor leaguers make less than minimum wage to play "professional baseball". For reference, most guys make less than $14,000 per year in total. They are asked to perform at a high level almost every night for 6 months and are treated like crap. This is at least a step in the right direction... Next up, better pay, food and travel perks and you might get some more high performers that mentally want to keep chasing that dream.

Refer back to my episode with Jeremy Wolf, who founded More Than Baseball. Jeremy and his team formed a non profit, helping struggling minor leaguers through life.

INTERVIEW: Chris Caulk + Former Walk-On Wide Receiver at USC

Chris has the most indirect way of playing Division 1 football. He decided mid way through high school that he was going to give up baseball and shoot for the stars to play football in college... That dream was cut short even before he played a high school game as the knee injuries piled up. He spent a few years bouncing a round junior colleges until finally getting the call to play at USC, his dream school. Although he never played for the Trojans, he had an incredible experience there and we discuss what it was like to play for Clay Helton. We also dive into where he thinks the programs needs to go now and which quarterbacks threw the best ball...

He's on his way to becoming an entertainment star, so follow his journey below.

Matt and I met at a sports media conference and I was lucky enough to have him on the Too Tall Sports Podcast today. He explains his story about growing up in Iowa, specifically Quad Cities as a kid, (I played there a few times in the minors). He played baseball at Iowa St. and made the last out at their home stadium as the baseball program was cut shortly after...

Matt spent some years in minor league baseball before jumping into communications with the Pirates. After a 5 year run there, he made a huge "left turn" (pun intended) to switch sports careers over to NASCAR corporate. He has now been there for 10 years and loves it!

We discuss his stories over the past decade and everything about NASCAR that the average fan doesn't know...

They recently signed on to do a race at the LA Coliseum in February of 2022. Crazy!

INTERVIEW: Ron Pitts

My guest this week is Ron Pitts. He is a new podcaster with former NFL Super Bowl winning coach, Mike Martz. Ron was a college football player at UCLA in the mid 80's under famous coach Terry Donahue. Ron was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 7th round of the 1985 NFL Draft. He played a few seasons there and eventually went to Green Bay, ironically following his father, Elijah Pitts, footsteps who also played in Lambeau Field.

Ron lets us know what it's like to return multiple punts back for touchdowns and how difficult it is to get one in a game.

Ron was also a TV broadcaster for many years post career and we discuss what it was like to prepare each week on the media side for a college or pro football game.

We talk about the PAC 12 conference and what they need to do to contend with the big boys nowadays.

My guest this week is, Jeremy Barfield, former long time minor leaguer and now a big time gamer on Twitch.

Jeremy is originally from Houston and was a high school and also later, a junior college draft pick to the Oakland A's.

Jeremy and I met each other along the way during our minor league careers and he was always one of my favorite players to play against. He's got some great stories from his career including a time where he hit a homerun and it hit a guy in the collarbone when he was petting a goat in center field.... yes, you can't make this up haha!

You might know his last name, Barfield, as his dad Jesse Barfield played and coaches in the big leagues for a long time. His brother Josh Barfield also played in the big leagues for some time as well.

This is a really fun episode!

Interview with Josh Rawitch:

Josh has been in baseball for over 27 years! Since the age of 18 starting with an internship with the Dodgers and he's never left the game. He spent 15 years with the Dodgers and another 10 years with the Diamondbacks in their Media Relations departments. He climbed all the way up to Director of Communications level for those respective teams. We discuss his years with Tommy Lasorda and Vin Scully and see Clayton Kershaw grow up in the organization.

Josh and I met in 2012, when I was Rule 5'd to the DBacks in Big League spring training and we've stayed in touch since.

Now the president of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, Josh is ready for this opportunity and he couldn't be more excited to start.
