Bornholm ligger i Østersøen på Danmarks østlige side.

Bornholm Island is located in the Baltic Sea on Denmark’s eastern side.

Its strategic location in the sea has made it a place of contention for centuries.

Most of the time it has remained part of Denmark, but in the past it has been part of Sweden and Lubeck as well.

Currently the biggest industries on Bornholm are arts and crafts, including pottery and glass making, fishing, and dairy farming.

During the summer, tourism is also a big industry.

The history of the island dates back at least to the 9th century, and the fighting over control of it has lasted for most of its history.

It became part of the historical Lands of Denmark in the 9th century after the consolidation of a number of small, previously separate chiefdoms.

Control of Bornholm became the focus of major disputes between the Danish crown and the See of Lund, and there were numerous battles between them as both sides fought for control of the strategic position in the Baltic Sea.

The island’s first fortress was Gamleborg, although it was replaced by the Lilleborg fortress in 1150.

Then 100 years later, the archbishop of the area built Hammershus, his own fortress on another part of Bornholm.

It was from that fortress that a military campaign in which the rest of the island, including Lilleborg, was conquered.

Various parties continued to battle over ownership of the island for the next two centuries.

The island was also of strategic significance in World War II when the Soviets occupied the island.
