In 1947, Bill and Dawn Gates moved into a house on Main Street in Bolton Landing. There was a trolley-car-turned-diner attached to it, and they bought it in late 1948. Neither Bill nor Dawn had experience in the hospitality or restaurant industry, but according to their son, Bill Gates (Junior), they dove right in. The diner stayed bustling and busy until the Gates closed it in 1981.
The diner was a family affair; all three Gates children put themselves through college working at the Bill Gates Diner - every summer, seven days a week. Bill (Junior) started in the summer of 1949.
