The federal government’s congressional watchdog agency is taking a look at a controversial plan that helps adjust water levels on Lake Ontario.

"Summer Classics at The Strand" continues its 2019 season at the historic Strand Theatre in Schroon Lake tonight at 8 pm with many filmgoers’ all-time favorite movie, "Casablanca." The evening will be hosted by film historian and Turner Classic Movies contributor Jeremy Arnold, author of the book, “The Essentials: 52 Must-See Movies and Why They Matter.” Arnold's book, of course, includes “Casablanca.”

Jeremy Arnold told Todd Moe that the 1942 film - starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman - remains a favorite today because of the great cinematography and its classic love story.

North Country Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Republican, is escalating her war of words with the Glens Falls Post-Star, one of the region’s major daily newspapers.

In a post on her campaign Facebook page - not her official congressional site - Stefanik and her staff accused the Post-Star of censorship, a claim which appears to be factually untrue.

Six people were arrested yesterday at a protest in Glens Falls calling for the closure of migrant detention camps. The Glens Falls Post-Star reports that the six people arrested had gone inside the building where Congresswoman Elise Stefanik’s office is located and then refused to leave.

Stefanik has since called some of those protesters Socialists. She also accused the Post Star newspaper of censorship.

The Amish community has grown in recent years from St. Lawrence County into new parts of Essex, Franklin and Washington Counties. That’s good news for small towns eager to see population growth, new businesses, and the revival of old farms. But New York State police say buggy accidents are also on the rise and efforts to improve safety have reached an impasse.

It’s been a pretty nice summer so far weather-wise, and aside from the chance of a shower, and some nighttime temperatures dipping into the 40s on Saturday night, it promises to be another nice weekend for outdoor adventure.
