"Ghosts of Saranac Lake,” a new exhibit of watercolor paintings by Valerie Patterson, is on display at the Adirondack Artists Guild in Saranac Lake. The exhibit will continue through the end of the month.

The St. Lawrence River has been long noted as a prime fishing spot in the region. But now, it has received national honors as well. Bassmaster Magazine ranked the St. Lawrence River the number one bass fishery in the nation for 2019.

Expect popular parking and camping areas to fill early. Parking rules are being enforced along Route 73, limiting spaces there. If you are headed to the High Peaks, have alternatives ready in the event legal parking is unavailable over this busy weekend, especially at the Adirondack Mountain Reserve parking lots. The Garden Trailhead is only accessible by the Keene Shuttle from Marcy Field, 7 am to 7 pm.

Change is coming to a really popular area in the Adirondacks, the Saranac Lakes Wild Forest. It's big, more than 75,000 acres of land, almost 20,000 acres of water, including the Saranacs and many other lakes and ponds.

It’s a patchwork. It edges up against the St. Regis Canoe area and the Fish Creek campground and it hop-scotches over to Lake Placid. A lot of people use bits and pieces of this area, for a wide range of outdoor activities. But this area has not had a state management plan, though the DEC has been working on one for years - and after public hearings and revisions, it's complete, and that will change things in this popular Adirondack destination.

More than 50 people came out in Plattsburgh yesterday to protest the treatment of migrants at the southern border with Mexico. The protest was part of a larger national movement calling for the closure of migrant detention camps.

New York's county clerks will meet in Syracuse on Monday to discuss a new law that requires county departments of motor vehicles to issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants. Meanwhile, some county clerks who are opposed to the law are pressing forward on a federal lawsuit.
