The Lake Placid Film Forum is moving its weekend of films, workshops and panel discussions to October, rather than early June this year. Since the LPFF began in 2000, it's been held in the early summer. But the Adirondack Film Society, which organizes the annual film-related event, announced this week that the event will be held at the end of October in hopes of attracting more moviegoers and a wider selection of films. The LPFF will be held October 26 to the 28. The Adirondack Film Society's Fred Balzac says the switch to late fall offers several advantages over June in that autumn is prime-time for film festivals.Festival director Gary Smith says for the first time in the forum's 18-year history, a central theme for the festival has been chosen - diversity.The forum will utilize the Palace Theatre and the Lake Placid Center for the Arts as it's two major venues, with the High Peaks Resort as the forum's headquarters. The "Sleepless in Lake Placid" 24-hour student filmmaking event has been cancelled this year, though AFS officials say the forum will continue to honor local films and filmmakers. A fundraiser for the film society will be held at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts on April 28.

Winter conditions remain with deep snow, difficult ice, and summit temperatures mostly in the 20s this weekend. Thick ice has formed on some trails, and conditions everywhere are very icy, with snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain all in the forecast this weekend.

A state of emergency is in effect in Ft. Covington, in Franklin County. A number of homes have been evacuated along flood prone streets. According to Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill, town officials declared the emergency Wednesday at 10 am as the Salmon River rose "substantially."

A lot of different things are mixed with silicon dioxide to make different kinds of glass. Added lead makes crystal. Most ordinary glass is made with the addition of soda lime. Pyrex glass has boron to give it heat resistance. Fiberglass contains aluminum. Amorphous substances like porcelain and polycarbonate plastic can also count as glass, as can certain amorphous mixtures of metal. One of the most interesting new technologies is Bioglass, where calcium, phosphorus and other bone nutrients are added to glass to serve as a matrix for replacement bone.
