Most of the people in the 24 homes that were evacuated on Saturday because of flooding in Fort Covington, in Franklin County, have returned to their homes, according to the North Country chapter of the American Red Cross. But officials say six to eight homes remain cut off by floodwater. On Tuesday, the Red Cross said volunteers provided financial assistance and emotional support to two adults and two children.In Plattsburgh, residents of a mobile home park had to evacuate on Monday and Tuesday. Ice jams on the Saranac River caused flooding in the southern part of the city.

There's a small town called Benson on the southern edge of the Adirondack Park. Residents refer to "being on the mountain" because the town is at a higher elevation and gets more snow in the winter. The total population is 192 people.

New York State is going to pony up more money for a water line in the Jefferson County town of Orleans. Governor Andrew Cuomo's office called town supervisor Kevin Rarick last night to say the state will pay another $4 million for the line.

Roller-coaster temperatures over the last few days triggered river flooding, evacuations and road closures across the North Country and in Vermont. Fort Covington in Franklin County and Swanton in northern Vermont faced some of the worst flooding as high water hit nearly every part of the region.

Temperatures around minus 20 Thursday morning rose to 60 degrees above on Friday last week. That was a stunning swing. But just maybe it didn't hurt plants as much as we might think. By Friday night, the temperature was plunging again, and the snow was falling, re-insulating the ground, where the soil temperature is surprisingly moderate.

For nearly 50 years, the slopes behind Cold Brook on a winding section of Route 56 in South Colton, in St. Lawrence County, were some of the best spots for skiing in the North Country.The Snow Bowl was owned by St. Lawrence University, and in its earliest days it was a state-of-the-art skiing facility. It had miles of cross-country ski trails, alpine slopes and multiple ski jumps. It was sold off years ago, and all that remains today are remnants of a large snack bar. Memories of the Snow Bowl will be shared on Sunday afternoon, at 2 pm, in the cafeteria of Colton-Pierrepont Central School. It's part of the lead-up activities to Colton's Winterfest Weekend.In the early 1950s, the Snow Bowl was the largest university-operated ski center in the country. 86-year-old Bob Axtell, who managed the Snow Bowl, an equipment shop, and coached skiing at St. Lawrence University, remembers the rise of a strong skiing culture in the North Country. He says many top notch skiers got their start at the Snow Bowl.

The president of the University of Rochester is resigning. Joel Seligman announced his resignation on the same day a report was released from an outside law firm asked to look into the way the university handled allegations of sexual harassment a professor.
