St. Lawrence County officially has a new district attorney. Republican Gary Pasqua was sworn in this week at a ceremony in Canton.

Governor Cuomo used his state of the state address yesterday to take aim at local governments across New York that rely on property taxes.He said changes to the federal tax code approved last month mean in Washington local governments will have to cut back.

Much of Governor Cuomo's speech was pretty gloomy, framed by big challenges he says the state is facing. He cited policies coming from Washington DC as threats to New York's economy. But Cuomo also spoke of optimism and pointed repeatedly to the North Country as a place where progress is being made.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in his eighth State of the State speech, told lawmakers that 2018 will be the "most challenging" year, and he said they will have to fight against what he said are "threats" from the federal government. He also announced steps to combat sexual harassment and reform the state's criminal justice system.

A Lake Placid native, John Desrocher, has been named by the Trump administration to head the U.S. diplomatic mission in Algeria. Another North Country native, Peter Vrooman, raised in Canton, NY will be the next ambassador to Rwanda if confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

A noted dancer, author, and historian from Canton has died. Malcolm McCormick was 90 years old. He was born in Gouverneur.
