Dannemora is reliving the dramatic prison break of June 2015, when inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat escaped from the maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility. Much of the North Country was on lock down during the weeks-long search for the two convicted killers. Matt was eventually killed in a shootout and Sweat was captured near the Canadian border. Many local residents and law enforcement officers want to put all that behind them. But Hollywood star Ben Stiller is recreating the escape and the search for Escape at Dannemora, his new TV series. And he wants it to be realistic. That meant another lock down for Dannemora this week.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said New Yorkers who use the state Thruway will have a bit of a wait before more cashless tolling is installed on the nearly 500-mile tolled portion of the road.The Cuomo administration's Thruway Authority has adopted cashless tolls at the new Tappan Zee Bridge and will take down the toll booths on the Grand Island Bridge in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area early next year.

The trees are beginning to change color, and the fall foliage season has begun, especially in the High Peaks and cooler mountain valleys. Boat launches, trailhead parking lots, and backcountry camping spots will fill early this weekend and on any good weather weekend during the fall foliage season. Some of the best places to see the foliage are outside of the busy High Peaks.

Researchers recently announced the discovery of over 7,000 grass carp eggs in a Lake Erie tributary. The good news? This isn't the Asian carp species we're trying to prevent from entering the Great Lakes. The bad news? Grass carp pose a different threat.

The state Board of Regents is taking steps to make it easier for teachers to become certified in New York. But the state education commissioner denies that it's a lessening of requirements.

History, nature, and early 20th century presidential politics come together in Newcomb, N.Y., this weekend. The town celebrates its connection to the 26th President of the United States with its annual Teddy Roosevelt Weekend. Roosevelt visited the Adirondacks in the late 1800s and became president in 1901 after William McKinley's assassination.This year's celebration highlights the anniversary of World War I, and the centennial of women winning the right to vote in New York State. The event features outdoor and indoor activities all weekend long.Todd Moe spoke with some of the organizers of "TR Weekend" in Newcomb. Paul Hai says the town has a strong connection to Roosevelt as a naturalist, explorer, and president. Hai says this is the town of Newcomb's premiere event.

State officials have confirmed that an invasive insect known as the Emerald ash borer has reached the North Country.The DEC captured the pests at monitoring traps in Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties in late August.

Update 6:00 am 9/14/17: Searchers in the High Peaks have found new clues left behind by 28-year-old Alex Stevens. Crews scouring the wilderness near Wallface Mountain say they've found what appears to be the man's campsite. The search will continue this morning in the rugged terrain near Newcomb.

Social primates are supposed to share when they find food, but some will cheat. If they are caught, the group will punish them. Some plants and fungi use a kind of barter system to swap nutrients, and some of them will also cheat.
