A group of artists along the St. Lawrence River will share its varied talents this Friday night in Clayton during the Grand Opening of Fibonacci 321 Art Gallery on James Street. The gallery features eleven artists working in clay, wood, metals, textiles, drawing and painting. They'll welcome visitors to take a look at art up close this season. Last summer, Todd Moe caught up with artists Greg Lago and Ginny Hovendon who were in the front yard of Fibonacci 321 Gallery offering a chance to view their works in progress during a series of "art in action" demonstrations. At a town hall forum in Plattsburgh last night, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik faced a tough crowd. Most people in the audience were outraged and anxious, and they had a lot of questions about health care. They wanted Stefanik to explain her vote to repeal and replace major parts of the Affordable Care Act. As Stefanik responded to each question and defended her stance on issues, some in the crowd wondered if she was really listening. [full story]

Some lawmakers are pressing the state’s comptroller to divest the state’s pension fund from the fossil fuel industry. But Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said he believes he can be more effective in changing the companies’ behavior by acting from the inside.A worldwide movement to encourage public institutions like universities and municipalities to divest from the fossil fuel industry is targeting the state’s pension fund. Mark Dunlea with the group Divest New York said with an administration in Washington that essentially does not believe in climate change, it’s more important than ever for states like New York to take steps. A historic landmark in St. Lawrence County will receive top honors at an event in New York City this week. Heuvelton's Pickens Hall will be given the Preservation League of New York State's 2017 Excellence in Historic Preservation Award on Wednesday. Built in 1858 by John Pickens, the three-story stone building contained a post office, meeting hall, General Store, and a concert hall. In 2003, the Heuvelton Historical Association bought the dilapidated building from St. Lawrence County for $1. The $2.75 million needed to restore the building came from state grants and private donations.Last year, just before a grand re-opening of the historic third floor Opera House, Todd Moe spoke with Heuvelton Historical Society President David Kingsley who oversaw the renovation project for the last 12 years. He'll be in New York City tomorrow night to accept the award. Kingsley says the historic space boasts some of the latest sound equipment and stage lighting. [full story]
