After World War II, the United States transformed itself into a superpower. Except for the Soviet Union and other second-world countries, no one was immune to its influence. Especially after the US Congress passed the Marshall Plan, an economic and reconstruction aid program for Western European countries. U.S. influence in Europe and Asia is even more unimaginable.
In the second half of the 20th century, the Kuomintang retreated to Taiwan, and mainland China was completely controlled by the Communist Chinese government. To stop communism, Taiwan and the United States signed a mutual defense treaty. Taiwan became America's anti-communist front in the Western Pacific. As a result, large numbers of American soldiers and aid entered Taiwan.
Many older generations experienced the era of "Taiwan-US cooperation" at that time. The U.S. military has brought some things that represent Western cultures, such as soap, cola, cigarettes, alcohol, and fashion magazines, all of which are loved by the Taiwanese. In addition, American pop music culture has also had a strong influence on Taiwan. Young people of that era would dance in ballrooms and listen to Western music as a fashion. It can be seen that Taiwan was deeply influenced by American culture at that time.
These effects continued until Taiwan and the United States severed diplomatic relations, even after Taiwan lifted martial law and became a Democratic country.
Now, due to globalization, it is difficult for the whole world to be free from American or Western culture. The strong influence makes it easy for Taiwanese to accept various cultures from the United States or the West, so we can start paying attention to the influence on Taiwan's native culture.
