    Publisher's Summary:
My Life According to My Destiny, by Vanny Vorng, a survivor of the Killing Fields, is the story of one man's struggle from his childhood up to the present time. It entails his fight to survive the many brutal events in Cambodia from the Coup d'Etat of 1970, to the fall of the Khmer Republic in 1975, to the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979. The Khmer Rouge Communist Party of Cambodia purged the cities and countryside of intellectuals, rival politicians, monks and teachers. The extremeness of this group lead to a country that had no religion, no free market, no schools, no families, and a closed border. Citizens attempted to hide their old lives from ears within the walls while food became dangerously scarce in the so-called Agrarian Utopia. The new party in charge invented ways of making entire families disappear. Mr. Vorng's story describes the events of each conflict as they unfold, where each time he somehow managed to survive the ordeal to tell the story. After the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia in 1979, he found a way to provide for his family's needs. Mr. Vorng and his family realized they would be better off leaving the land they called home for so many years. He led his family and friends to the refugee camps in Thailand and the Philippines, after which they were transported to America to start a new life.

    Read this story
This book tells a little known history of Cambodia in the 1970s through the first hand experiences of the Author. The writing lacks polish, but the story is captivating. I highly recommend this book.
    Great Audiobook!
Where does My Life According to My Destiny rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is a great audiobook. The voice acting is superb and the story is truly gripping. It's truly a testament to how quickly our lives can change!
What was one of the most memorable moments of My Life According to My Destiny?
The most memorable moment of this memoir was when Vanny's family was running for the border--the refugee camps--and literally being chased by mortar fire.
Which character as performed by Buddy Hatton was your favorite?
Though Buddy did a great job on all the characters, I especially enjoyed his rendition of Vanny's dialogue.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This was definitely a book I did not want to stop listening to, even though I'd already read the book! Buddy does a great job of carrying the listener through the story.
    Any additional comments?
I would highly recommend this audiobook to anyone interested in Cambodia's history, personal memoirs, or just plain great storytelling!

    Title: The Outsider
    Subtitle: My Life in Intrigue

    Release date: 09-10-15

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Frederick Forsyth has seen it all. And lived to tell the tale.
We all make mistakes, but starting the Third World War would have been a rather large one. To this day I still maintain it was not entirely my fault. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
During the course of my life, I've barely escaped the wrath of an arms dealer in Hamburg, been strafed by a MiG during the Nigerian civil war, and landed during a bloody coup in Guinea-Bissau.
The Stasi arrested me, the Israelis regaled me, the IRA prompted a quick move from Ireland to England, and a certain attractive Czech secret police agent - well, her actions were a bit more intimate. And that's just for starters. All of that I saw from the inside. But all that time I was, nonetheless, an outsider.
Trained first as a pilot then as a journalist, Frederick Forsyth finally turned to fiction and became one of the most lauded thriller writers of our time.
As exciting as his novels, Forsyth's autobiography is a candid look at an extraordinary life lived to the full - a life whose unique experiences have provided rich inspiration for 13 internationally best-selling thrillers.
    Members Reviews:
    Riveting memoir
Forsyth writes in an intimate manner and made me feel as if I was sitting in his living room over a cup of tea discussing his life. The book is well written, concise with adventure, intrigue and humor.
The first part of the book he tells of his youth and his desire to fly planes. I was impressed that his father sent him to live with a family in France each summer when he was a child to learn French; then as a teen he sent him to live with a German family to learn German. Just before he went into the RAF he spent time in Spain living with a family to learn Spanish. He also learned Russian but via an academic method. A good part of the beginning of the book he discusses the techniques and importance of research to be a good author. He points out that a writer is an outsider as he is an observer of society and then works in solitude.
The remainder of the book is about his life as a journalist for the BBC, Reuters and as a free lance reporter. He discusses various wars in Africa and events such as the attempt to assassinate Charles de Gaulle that he covered as a reporter. Forsyth reveals how his ability to speak like a native helped him as an investigative reporter. He then details how these events and his investigative reporting provided the basic information that gave him the bases for his novels. I have read most of his books over the years and could relate to events in his life that he worked into his stories.
The book provides an insight into the mind of a writer. The story shows how much Forsyth liked to travel and enjoyed his desire for adventure. Robert Powell does a good job narrating the book.
An amazing life described with verve
Ive listened to and enjoyed many of Frederick Forsyths novels: all characterised by exciting themes given veracity by the authors great attention to detail. What I didnt know was that many of his exciting story-lines are based on experiences he was actually involved in. This is certainly the most-action packed biography I've ever encountered. If this autobiography had been a novel I might have thought one life could not actually have so many over-the-top experiences and repeatedly defy death.

    Publisher: Rukia Publishing

    Publisher's Summary:
Meet Sarah Jane, a woman with a reputation for culinary catastrophe, who tries to keep her family fed in challenging circumstances in rural France. Frugal living was not part of the plan when they arrived from Australia to undertake the renovation of a quaint cottage in the Charente. However, when life threw them a curveball, the challenge was set: How to survive in France with very little money and two Australian cattle dogs.
The answer came in the form of five chickens, four ducks and a vegetable garden! The frugal plan was to save money by any means possible - to enable any money they could earn to be invested into continuing the renovation of the cottage. In true "good life" style, Sarah Jane attacks this challenge head on by keeping some small livestock and converting a garden that resembled a meadow into a French "potager," or kitchen garden. The French tradition of using produce from their "potagers" is renowned for enabling families to create meals that are healthy, cost effective, and simple.
There are 31 recipes for a variety of food and drinks included in a month-by month-account of how they transformed a neglected garden into a frugal yet productive expat kitchen garden.

Brian's Legacy chronicles the emotional journey of a dedicated father and his troubled son. As a child, Brian Othmer faced many challenges, including epilepsy, Tourette's, Asperger's, and explosive rage. As a young adult, he recorded his journey in a diary, which reveals a young man determined to understand himself and his brain, and to answer the question that drives him: Where do I fit in this world?
In this phoenix-from-the-ashes story, Brian's journal entries are paired with his father's recollections, as Siegfried and Sue Othmer seek out medical and behavioral experts to help them understand and cope with their son. Throughout their heartbreaking odyssey, they finally discover something that works: neurofeedback. Through their work in neurofeedback, Brian's legacy lives on.

    Great boom!
Illuminating and moving memoir that finds triumph in loss...
Based upon journals kept by the late Brian Othmer and with an introduction and surrounding commentary by his father, Siegfried Othmer, Brian's Legacy is the illuminating and moving memoir of Brian's struggle with temporal lope epilepsy and how that struggle made him a key figure in the development and application of neurofeedback.
I initially read this book while researching an article I was writing about EEG Info., the biofeedback company run by the Othmer family, but what started as research soon became a genuinely compelling reading experience. There is real pain to be found in this story -- neither Brian nor his father sugarcoat the serious disturbances Brian experienced -- but there is also real joy and inspiration. One particular highlight is a chapter dealing with Brian's turn toward spirituality as part of an effort to deal with his illness; he's clearly searching but also clearly unsentimental, which gives the section an intriguing tension and insight. Although the book could have been a well-intentioned but heavy-handed lesson of sorts, it avoids the "admirable but dry" trap such memoirs risk by presenting Brian not as a heroic martyr, but as a complex, funny, quirky, sometimes lovely, sometimes not-so-lovely teenager and young man who enjoyed horror movies, had an eccentric sense of humor, and could be both tender and terrifying toward his younger brother.

    New York Times Best Seller
In this book, Billy Crystal, currently starring in the new TV show The Comedians as an aging comic, gives a hilarious and heartfelt account of what it's really like to get older. Billy Crystal is turning 65, and hes not happy about it. With his trademark wit and heart, he outlines the absurdities and challenges that come with growing old, from insomnia to memory loss to leaving dinners with half your meal on your shirt. He also looks back at the most powerful and memorable moments of his long and storied life, from entertaining his relatives as a kid in Long Beach, Long Island to his years doing stand-up in the village up through his legendary stint at Saturday Night Live, When Harry Met Sally, and his long run as host of the Academy Awards.
Listeners get a front-row seat to his one-day career with the New York Yankees, his love affair with Sophia Loren, and his enduring friendships with several of his idols, including Mickey Mantle and Muhammad Ali.
He lends a light touch to more serious topics like religion (the aging friends I know have turned to the Holy Trinity: Advil, bourbon, and Prozac), grandparenting, and, of course, dentistry. As wise and poignant as they are funny, Crystals reflections are an unforgettable look at an extraordinary life well lived.

    Publisher's Summary:
Now a stirring movie from Paramount Pictures - starring Kate Mara (House of Cards and Fantastic Four) and David Oyelowo (Selma) - this inspirational, news-making life story of the young female hostage who in 2005 singlehandedly talked the infamous Atlanta courthouse killer, Brian Nichols, into surrendering peacefully by gaining his confidence through her prayers and personal faith and by reading passages to him from the Christian blockbuster A Purpose Driven Life.
In March 2005 Ashley Smith made headlines around the globe when she miraculously talked her way out of the hands of alleged courthouse killer Brian Nichols after he took her hostage for seven hours in her suburban Atlanta apartment. In this moving, inspirational account, Ashley shares the details of her traumatic ordeal and expands on how her faith and the best-selling book The Purpose-Driven Life helped her survive and bring the killer's murderous rampage to a peaceful end.
Like her captor, Smith too has faced darkness and despair. Seeking a new life, she moved to Atlanta, got a job, enrolled in a medical assistant training program, and was beginning to find her way to becoming the kind of mom she wanted her little girl to have. Then Brian Nichols took her hostage. Just hours earlier he'd allegedly shot to death a judge, a court reporter, a deputy, and a federal agent and escaped in a stolen vehicle. Now she found herself face to face with Nichols, a desperate, heavily armed man with nothing left to lose.
Juxtaposing the minute-by-minute tale of her experience with the tragedies and triumphs of her own life, Captive is a riveting story that will leave no listener untouched.

    Poor writing and narration.
I was anxious to hear this story. Unfortunately, the author narrates the book herself and does a very poor job. Her voice is not pleasing to listen to. She does not change intonation or voice when she does different characters so it becomes confusing to determine who is speaking.
I felt that the writing was very poorly done. Much time was spent going into great detail about unimportant details of the scene. Much of the information was given over and over again. I feel that the book could've been done in one quarter the amount of time.
I am sure that the book could have been better with better writing and narration. It certainly has a good underlying story.
    very personal
book was a lot better than the movie. you feel like you get to know the people.
    Awesome testimony!
A great example of God's amazing work. I was touched and awed by Ashley Smith's testimony!

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
For eight months in 2008, US Army Capt. Matt Zeller served as an embedded combat adviser with the Afghan security forces in Ghazni, Afghanistan. Watches Without Time is a compilation of the emails and letters he sent home to family and friends during that period - so that, as he writes in the preface, "should anything have ever happened to me, they would know what I went through." Watches Without Time gives a granular and gripping account of the tough challenges that Zeller and his men encountered in Ghazni and of the very complex missions they accomplished there. Written in clear and searingly intimate prose, it also highlights the many trials and emotion-laden experiences he underwent throughout his tour and after returning to the United States. Zeller takes his readers with him on an emotional journey that will lead many to share the anger he felt at the many ways in which he saw the war being mismanaged while stirring increased admiration for the soldiers tasked with conducting that war on the very difficult terrain of Afghanistan. Watches Without Time has a foreword by former assistant secretary of state for Near East affairs Amb. Edward S. ("Ned") Walker. It gives the listener a realistic, heartwarming, and terrifying look at the challenges the US military faced in Afghanistan and the strain the war has placed on many US soldiers.
    Members Reviews:
A True Lesson of Life in Combat
I learned so much I did not know about the war in Afghanistan. Matt Zeller's writing is concise and passionate enough to make the reader feel they are there experiencing what he did. Through his eyes we see triumphs at progress and frustrations when progress comes to an abrupt halt, and for multiple reasons. We owe Matt and the men and women like him a bundle of appreciation for their sacrifice in serving our country. This is a good read that I highly recommend.
    The Real Deal
I have to preface this review by stating that I am a former colleague of the author. We served in the Headquarters of the same National Guard brigade in New York State. I had only recently returned from a deployment to Iraq as a Civil Affairs Officer. When I met him, Matt was a junior Military Intelligence Officer, extremely motivated and professional. He picked my brain about my Iraq experience and the people; I willingly obliged as no one else seemed interested. They were too busy "planning". I remember thinking: "If any of the other junior officers are as professional, willing to learn, and able to think 'outside the box', we may just win this new kind of war." Hell, Matt doesn't even remember what the box looks like..
As I read the first chapters, my mind kept going back to my pre-deployment for Iraq. I was eager and naive (in the sense that I couldn't possibly know what to expect). This is the state of mind we find Zeller and his fellow soldiers, knowing that, even after they completed their grueling, mind-numbing training, there was still the specter of Afghanistan looming on the horizon. At the beginnings of the chapters, there are black and white photos of Matt and his teammates, many of whom were friends and associates I'd helped train before my retirement.

    Loved It
The author grew up in a small town in Louisiana; I grew up in a small town in Virginia. Religion was a huge deal in her hometown, as it was in mine. She lost friends and family members in her life after she came out; though I didn't lose anyone close, friends avoided me and certain family member's shoulders became a lot colder when I announced that I was bi.
However I found more to this short little audiobook than it being relatable. I found a truth and a poignancy to this audio that spoke to me beyond the level of shared experience. This would also be a primer to girls (or boys I guess) on finding and dealing with their sexual identity. Major recommend on this one.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Fulani are the largest surviving group of nomads on the planet. In Walking with Abel, Anna Badkhen embeds herself with a family of Fulani cowboys - nomadic herders in Mali's Sahel grasslands - as they embark on their annual migration across the savanna. It's a cycle that connects the Fulani to their past even as their present is increasingly under threat - from Islamic militants, climate change, and the ever-encroaching urbanization that lures away their young. The Fulani, though, are no strangers to uncertainty - brilliantly resourceful and resilient, they've contended with famines, droughts, and wars for centuries.
Dubbed "Anna Bâ" by the nomads who embrace her as one of their own, Badkhen narrates the Fulani's journeys and her own with compassion and keen observation, transporting us from the Neolithic Sahara crisscrossed by rivers and abundant with wildlife to obelisk forests where the Fulani's Stone Age ancestors painted tributes to cattle. Together they cross the Sahel - the savanna belt that stretches from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic - with Fulani music they download to their cell phones and tales infused with the myths that ground their past, make sense of their identity, and safeguard their future.
