Another unfortunate case of author reading book.

"Be Now, Buddy What" is an interesting story with some fascinating observations about today's neo-spiritualism and the cult of celebrity. Unfortunately, Dan Spencer saw the need (like far too many authors today) to read his own book.

Spencer tries to do character voices and in many cases (especially feminine ones) proves horribly inept at it. The bulk of the narration is serviceable but some characters (especially that of Buddy himself) grate on the eardrums.

I recommend this book solely for the story. If you can't stomach half-baked author narration then look for it in a different format.

What happens next is both tragic and beautiful, a testament to love finding its way even among the least visible citizens on Turkeys mean streets.

I was expecting this to be in the line of Mohammed Choukri and Abdellah Taia's writing. While I don't wish to essentialize Middle Eastern/Northern African writing on queer-topics, there are some similarities in terms of (style of) 'lyricalness' and 'romance' that makes some of this writing stand out in a particularly evocative/attractive manner. Ali and Ramazan evokes a similar feeling but falls short when it comes to the way it depicts its main characters and their struggles. In the end the story is simply too straight forward, as such even somewhat boring which is odd considering the many obstacles both main characters face along the way. I won't say too much about the story itself which you can read about in other reviews but for me this book simply lacked a punch. It did not move beyond what it set out to do and as such delivered something bland.

Who knew!

What a beautiful book it is! I couldn't expect to discover such a touching and honest love story! Easy to read, true, full of love and tragic. The tragedy was sudden but the fate of Ali was easy to predict... But nevertheless I think they were very happy, such love is a rare and very high-esteemed thing, so many rich and prosperous families don't even have a respect to each other within, and these poor kids - they had much more than love. Despite of prostitution, pills, violence it's a very romantic novel, I really love it and highly recommend to read. Especially for ones who think that gay love is something perversive.

Very good book but the translation could be more professional.

very depressing tale

I really haven't read many Turkish novels, just one or two Orhan Pamuk, I believe this one to be close to real life on the streets, very depressing for those with nothing and a very depressing read.

Heartbreaking short novel

This quick read is not an uplifting tale of love. It is gritty and rough. The writing style is beautiful with child like prose. However, a heart wrenching read that will haunt you.

I don't think it would have been better even in Turkish

I don't usually write reviews, but I felt compelled to on this one. The premise of the story initially seemed very promising, but it ended up being filled with disjointed chapters and characters with whom I didn't feel any connection. I never felt invested in the characters' experiences after they aged out of the orphanage. Additionally, characters would pop up out of nowhere, and you wouldn't have any idea who they were or why there were central to the story.

Memorable collection of connected stories

Would you listen to These Precious Hours again? Why?

Yes. The reading is effective, and the stories about loss and recovery have a poignant resonance. Of course, they are speical to me since I created them.

What was one of the most memorable moments of These Precious Hours?

I like them all, but my favorite is the first, "These Precious Hours," which gives the book it's title. It captures Galway, Ireland, and the grief of someone on the road coming to terms with loss in a musical, colorful setting. "The Wife and the Monk" is a unique story, unlike anything I have written before.

Have you listened to any of Alex Hyde-Whites other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have seen him in films. He gives a straightforward but evocative reading that lets the characters breathe and allows the stories to carry themselves, working on the imagination of the listener. I don't think a narrator should "act" when doing an audiobook. Alex Hyde-White suggets the characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is, if I may say so, a fine combination of evocative stories, often lyrical prose, and a thoughful, understated but effective reader.

Not for prudes

I enjoyed the first book but the 2nd seem a little focused on the sex. That aside it is entertaining... a little more of Remshee would have been good, though his introduction did cause plot gaps, when you realise what he let happen...

but I was entertained.

A good listen

Not sure how this novel would work if you hadn't read (or listened to) the first, "The Last Werewolf", but I really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to the next!

Talulla is ready to give birth, but is still grieving, in fact she doesn't feel like she can bond with her child once it arrives. The vampires are still looking for her and it's almost a full moon.

Great Read!

Great read by a very compassionate, caring author.

great read

very compelling with fascinating characters and stories. just enough of the medical side mixed with the biography of a compassionate and relatable protagonist. the short story style keeps you hooked, as each one tells a poignant tale of a patient or event that you can tell has a hint of truth to it. dont judge the book by its (lack of) cover, as you'll find out while reading that everything is not as it seems and everyone you meet has their own story to tell.

Couldn't Put It Down

I started this book a couple of days ago and after finishing the first story, I realized I just couldn't stop reading it! These stories are told with great honesty and compassion, and each one was as good or better than the previous one. Every one touched my heart...something I never expected when I first picked this book up. It has a place on my "favorite books" list for sure.

Excellent

This is one of those books you finish and want to immediately read again. I couldn't get enough of it. It took longer to read through than normal because i found myself stopping every few pages to contemplate a thought that struck me in one way or another.

Half Blind

I'll admit Glen Duncan's my favorite living English author, but this was not his high point.

Nevertheless, at worst, it's our most important essay on the truly inhuman consequences of the use of torture.

And, it's a mercifully quick read.

Innovative approach and fascinating read

In 1959, Dinah Washington recorded a song that told us how different a span of a day can be. Just 24 little hours. In Glen Duncan's novel, this idea expands to 72 hours. For the main character, Augustus Rose - 72 hours can be both not enough, or agonizingly slow - perhaps to the point where you lose all concept of time and driven to the brink of insanity.

Augustus Rose is a complex character, he is a handsome bi-racial man with startling green eyes he inherited from his Italian mother. He doesn't say much, his demeanor is stoic, always guarded and he is difficult to reach. His personality is not necessarily open and comfortable. While this is not a warm and fuzzy for Happy Hour conversations, it IS the type of personality that does well under torture. And that's how we first meet August Rose - hanging in a windowless cell by hand-cuffs, his torturer a fellow American named Harper.

According to the publisher, Duncan's A Day and a Night and a Day is a "modern Grand Inquisition, in which love, loyalty, reason, and truth are on trial, and morality hangs in the balance". No kidding - but Rose is an unlikely spy, he's not a professional at all in this field, in fact, he runs a string of successful restaurants back in New York. So what is he doing being interrogated rather horribly by some guy wearing khakis from The Gap? ...in the life of a security professional, but don't let titles fool you, chap. This ain't no typical Sunday, and these ain't your garden variety oafish security types, either, bubs.

"Sunday in the Park with George" is a whippersnapper-esque takeoff on the eponymous Sondheim masterwork telling of a hellish day a one Captain Jack Halliday's life. Halliday's been relegated to four months of uncharacteristic busyness as a security captain (two chevrons) for an Iowan patrol outfit as part of his doctoral research in the "Insitutional Anthropology" field, as he describes. What should typically be a routine series of responsibilities becomes hell on wheels, literally, over the span of one hundred and twenty days. Halliday's been promoted to the captain's chair, and coincidentally, all hell has suddenly broken loose. Halliday begins thinking to himself that the gods have it in for him. Karmically-speaking, he thinks he's cursed.

Unfrotunately for Jack, he's a man on a mission in the throes of his degree program, and our Captain Jack's decided the most efficient means of taking in that critical raw data to assist him in rendering a scholar's opinion on the subject matter is only via a Strasberg-ish/Stanislavski-ian "method" approach to the area. By placing himself in the thick and swirl of it all, by interacting closely with his test subjects in a way that no mere bookish keyster-on-the-seat treatment can, the good 'Cap believes he shall come to know of its rolling vicissitudes like few others do.

It's a theory, and hey, even in the world of academe you've got to take a shot.

Joining him on his noble quest is the now-and-again bumbling shlemiel, the lovable Lieutenant George. Stalwart, unassuming, and for the most part taciturn, Georgie Porgie Pudding Pie has been working like a bad robot for the past thirty-two days straight without a single intervening day off to take a chill pill. As we discover, something else has been going on across town - a wildcat strike, no less, has broken out and gobbled up their firm, Centurion's, ostensibly available manpower (a job normally requiring a deuce of guards now has claim over nearly a dozen, armed somewhat to the teeth, but sans guns).
