Parody of slasher/horror films

What did you like best about Scream Queen? What did you like least?

I enjoyed the satire of it all, the skewering of all the Hollywood clichés. From the oily producers to the nipped and tucked starlet and wanna be action hero to the official scream queen. Unfortunately, the story was inconsistent as written and for me, the writing did not continually hold up. This is a take off on horror films so the premise, unctuous and greedy producers try to turn their lackluster horror films into a reality show and end up in a real haunted house/horror film, was interesting at first, but the plot began to wear on me.

Which character as performed by Jo Anna Perrin was your favorite?

I enjoyed them all and credit her wry tongue-in-cheek performance for keeping me interested even when the story did not.

Do you think Scream Queen needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. But with the right satiric style, it might actually make an interesting film. That is, on a par with the multitude of Scream parodies that are out there.

Slasher Movie As Told By Muppets.

What did you like best about Scream Queen? What did you like least?

I liked that it obviously knew its source material-- horror movies-- and referenced them accordingly. The entity was creepy and creative. Unfortunately the end was predictable, and the narrator was so off base that she presented as incompetent. Her vocal characterizations did frequenty call to mind muppets.

What did you like best about this story?

The entity was interesting, and the main character would have been likeable if the narrator hadn't given her a bad Marilyn Monroe impression in the place of a voice.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her first mistake was speaking. Her attempts at accents were distracting, her attempts at giving someone an ethnic presence was confusing, and her attempts at sexy were irritating.

Was Scream Queen worth the listening time?

With a competent narrator, possibly. But really, if you've ever seen a by the numbers slasher movie you've essentially read this. I would be curious to read it in print form, however.

Any additional comments?

Miss it in audible format. The narration is so bad it's impossible to enjoy the story.

Had to give up; narration appalling!

I bravely persevered for the first seven chapters but, the next day, I just couldn't face listening to Jo Anna Perrin any longer.

Soul Searching Adventure

When I was asked to review this title, I wasn't sure if it was a "witch" story or some occult novel, neither of which would ever appeal to me. What I found instead was a poignant, inspirational story of people just like all of us, but told in a way that made me think, and made me cry. The "souls" in this book are women, different ages, different backgrounds and beliefs, but all sharing the common ground of parenting. Baba is a spiritual woman with a Native American upbringing, a "two spirit" who has raised Julia from birth while struggling to get the birth mother to find her connection to her daughter. Through the interactions of the women in the circle, she comes to terms with her choices, choices that are in the best interest of all involved.

Readers will marvel at the ease that politics, psychology, philosophy an dspirituality are woven into a unique story that not only needs to be told, but should be mainstream in the way a difficult decision is handled with unconditional love.

By far the most intriguing book i have read

I used to love reading as a child, never put a book down. However, the past few years with my ADHD, I haven't been able to pick a book up. I had been told to read this book and once i finally did, i read all eleven chapters in one night. I am now hooked on everything miss Rayna Gangi has and will write. You can feel the emotion as if you are right there. She is an incredible writer with so much knowledge of everything you could possibly dream of. Im obsessed. This book is a mood uplifter and can teach you so much about yourself and who you would like to grow into. It defintely made me a better person. Thank you Rayna.

Recommended Read!

Souls of the Fire by Rayna Gangi. For me, this was like sitting down with an old friend and them telling you a story from a period of their life filled with love, honor and decisions not so easily made. The storyteller gives insight to how she used the gifts of her experiences through a body, mind, and spirit connection. The dynamics of the `circle' is interesting and I appreciated the acceptance of each to the other. Since reading this book, I have recommended it to many of my friends and am recommending it to you now dear reader.

Fascinating

At first I wasn't sure about reading this book for it's not what I normally read. As the saying goes "Reading is a Adventure." So on an adventure I went and I'm glad that I did.

It's a true story and I was fascinated by the author's Native American Spirituality and her Holistic Health practices that she had woven into her story.

I have smiled,laughed,cried and had my eyes opened while reading this book and that's a good thing.

The main thing for me was her unconditional love. She wrote from the heart and I felt it.

I first read Monday Lunch in Fairyland while on a trip to Europe three years ago, after I borrowed the book from our barge's library. The charming stories enchanted me. I thought of them often in the intervening years, and have found them equally enchanting upon rereading them. I highly recommend this collection.

The End of Troy VIIA

I bought this novel when it first came out and I've loved it ever since. It's based on an obscure classical reference that states that Astyanax, son of Hektor was not slain at the fall of Troy, but rather it was a scapegoat who was given up to the Akkhaians as a sacrifice. Astyanax survives in much the way his uncle Paris did before he came back to Troy. The novel explains the fates of both Troy VI and Troy VIIA and the climax of the rule of the Atreides. Some reviewers don't like the sexuality or the blood sacrifices in the book. There is nothing perverse and Bronze Age people hdid have sex and did have blood sacrifices. I personally like the way Somtow brings in the conflict between the old religion of the Great Goddess and the new religion of Dayeus Pitar. If you love Homer, buy this book.

Alternate History/Mythology Romp

Prolific and underrated fantasy/scifi author Somtow Sucharitkul, a.k.a. S. P. Somtow, here turns his hand to the world of ancient Greek mythology. Astyanax, son of slain Hector, is the hero who embarks on an impossible quest to rebuild fallen Troy. The familiar mythological elements are spiced up with the addition of zombies, Amazons, Egyptian sorcerers and more. Somtow's larger theme is the fall from the ancient world into modernity, the transition from the magical and heroic age of Bronze to the utilitarian age of Iron. The ancient matriarchal culture is seen in the figure of Snakemother, who has turned dark and "evil" in reaction to the emerging patriarchal culture and depredations of Skyfather. All in all a rich if sometimes uneven riff through the world of ancient mythology. It reads as if produced in one prolonged burst of inspiration, with passages of inspired, poetical language coexisting with stretches of functional fantasy-novel prose. An agreeable air of originality and mystery hangs over it all. If you like a good fantasy novel, and appreciate the ancient world, you can't go wrong with this one.

It's not easy being dead

A first person zombie novel that manages to be gruesome, funny, chilling AND affecting? You'd hardly think such a thing is possible. But Corey Redekop is a devious and resourceful author, as his first novel, SHELF MONKEY, amply proved. Sheldon Funk may be one of the undead but he's a dude with a lot of soul and despite his unhealthy appetites, you can't help pulling for the guy. Fate has offered him a mixed blessing: his acting career was going nowhere until his untimely demise and then, all at once, he's the most famous man, living or dead, on the planet. But a reanimated corpse draws a lot of unwelcome attention (religious nuts, perverts) and if it wasn't for his celebrity status, the CDC and government spooks would scoop him up in a second. Throw in a shadowy billionaire and a lurking horde of Lovecraftian monstrosities...well, you've got the makings of a novel that is utterly dismissive of genre boundaries and unacquainted with good taste. It is delirious, blood-soaked fun, a mash-up of "The Man Who Fell to Earth", the best zombie movies and satiric wits like Terry Southern and Ben Elton. Unrelenting, shameless and thoroughly sordid. An unsightly blot on Canadian literature. Highest possible recommendation.

A Real Romp

The Public Service vs The Individual

Would you consider the audio edition of Light Shining in the Forest to be better than the print version?

I haven't read this book, I have only listened to it.

Has Light Shining in the Forest turned you off from other books in this genre?

I don't think it is very easy to slip this book into a genre.The story is horrible, macabre, bizarre - in the class of weird that I put M J Hayder - but it is not only that. It is more; and more important.The motif of unaccompained children being taken by someone that they know, rather than a stranger is very, very unsettling. All the more so when the listener realises the reason behind the kidnappings. What happens to the children is not dealt with in any detail, and if it were, it would be unbearable. BUT - This book is written by a man who clearly understands the machinations of the Public Service, in particular, its awful failings and bureaucracies. He very cleverly juxtaposes these with what is happening to the kidnapped children and how The System fails them.

Any additional comments?

I'm not able to listen to this in entirety because of my horrible internet connection, so I want to review on the amount that I was able to hear. The narrator did an amazing job speaking for the different characters. The author forewarned of the R-rated language, so do be aware of that. I appreciated the heads up.

But Christopher Hudson has penned a different kind of story. Readers of this genre (involving crooks, bad guys... and oh, flying planes) will love this.

Meredith Rich Captured my heart six books ago!

I've read all five of Meredith Rich's Novels: Bare Essence, Bijoux, Little Sins, Tender Offerings, Virginia. Ms Rich seduced me in Bare Essence. I found it to be sensual, smart, and witty. This author creates well rounded characters who come off the page and engage you. And oh, what they do to you! Warning! Ms Rich's book are addictive. My three decades in Hollywood writing and directing films "The Present's Analyst", and TV. I created the "Barney Miller TV series, were years of constant searching for the next project. All of Meredith Rich's books take place within exotic locales, but when I read the blurb for this one and realized that it takes place within the world of clubs and discos, I initially resisted it because that didn't seem particularly appealing to me. Once I started it though, I was drawn into the lives of Alex, Juno and Lydia as they struggle with the powerful emotions and ties that bind them together. This isn't a book for the romantic faint of heart; it's for those who really want to immerse themselves in drama. Your average telenovela ain't got nothing on Little Sins. Woe! But, as usual, Ms. Rich makes you care about her characters in ways that go beyond the sensual nature of what they experience, so that what you read is fulfilling on many levels, not just an exciting, erotic foray into a world most of us will never experience.

The Perfect Escape

I was recovering from knee surgery and I wanted a complete escape from my real life. Little Sins did the trick. It was the perfect distraction to be plunged into a world completely foreign to me, but made easily-accessible by Meredith Rich's good writing and sense of drama.

Sex and Glamour

Meredith Rich's third novel is crammed full of sex, love, glamour, and adventure, not always in traditional proportions. It's the story of two best friends and the man they both love. Rich is a master at taking us inside exotic worlds. Here its the club and disco world in the days when that was the pinnacle of coolness.

Little Sins, Big Entertainment

Oh what a tangled web we weave, and not just with lies. Even the topic of the book takes some time to get used to. Two women and one man making a "couple." But, you get used to it and begin to get wrapped up in their lifestyle. There are 3 very distinct personalities to get involved with and each are well-developed and very affable.
