Disturbing novel on sexual exploitation and class
Written with elegance, detachment and irony about the interaction of the upper and lower classes in Victorian England, and dealing with the trades made by the protagonists to get a softer and more sexually fulfilled life in an emotionally cold world. The deadpan presentation of the initial outrage and later apparently very willing acceptance by the 'victims' and cool search for gratification by the rich and powerful provides a thought-provoking reflection on the nature of human relationships, where empathy is absent. Disturbing but not titillating.

Length: 7 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-28-10
    Publisher: Quercus Publishing Ltd
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
A thrilling fight for justice against the odds and a compelling love story in the aftermath of the First World War.
Philomena Blighs fiancé, Dan, has been shot. The First World War claimed many lives and so his death is not, in its own way, surprising. But Dan was shot in the minutes after the Armistice. The war was over.
In March 1919, over Dans birthday, Philomena travels to London to meet the men who were with him when he died, determined to uncover what happened. What she discovers is more shocking than shed ever imagined. Dans best friend, Jonathan, tells her that Dan was shot by a British officer over a gambling debt. There is no proof and all records of Jonathans accusation have been destroyed.
Set against a backdrop of London in the aftermath of the Great War, a time of upheaval, grief and wanton escapism, this is not just an inspirational account of what it means to be a hero, but also a breathtaking love story.

    Armistice
The prologue, six pages total, approximately seventeen hundred words. That was all it took for me to fall in love with Armistice by Nick Stafford. I was a goner. Hook, line and sinker.
I don't know how accurate it is for Philomena to take up after Dan's ghost, traipsing the streets of London on her own in early 1919, but the idea of a woman ignoring propriety in her search of closure after the death of her partner, that is something I can understand. Stafford decision to build the entire foundation of his story on this concept is nothing short of genius. It creates an instant bond between the reader and his female lead and gives him a little bit of wiggle room in terms of historical exactitude. In short, this worked for me.
Additionally, under the obvious question of Dan's death, Stafford explores post war society through the eyes of Philomena and Dan's friend Jonathan. Together these two represent all those left behind after the guns have been put down, their struggle to hang on to who they were before their lives were touched by violence and the people they became living in its shadow. Again, Stafford's use of emotion to augment the plot plays very well against the mystery Dan's murder.
Not a particularly complicated whodunnit, but at the end of the day I don't think that is what Stafford was going for. This is a story about avarice, revenge, class distinction and desperation. Yes, it revolves around a suspicious death, but more than anything else this is a period piece about the human condition. A highly recommended read for those with a penchant for small scale historic fiction.

Painful story of a bad marriage
I found this book to be grey and gloomy but still a very good read. Set in the 1920s and 1930s, it is the story of young Barbara, a university student aspiring to being an artist, from a good family in a small Norfolk town who has the world before her. She has a friend, Penny, whose brother Simon is newly returned from the war when the book opens. Simon is struggling with a certain degree of PTSD but he has some interest in Barbara though he does not pursue it. Instead, a brash, ambitious and older man named George has designs on Barbara and relentlessly pursues her until circumstances lead Barbara into accepting a proposal of marriage.
The novel then follows the marriage of Barbara and George and his ruthless, dishonest and relentless drive to build up a building business. There are some good insights into his character for it is on him that the story turns. Ultimately, of course, he gets his comeuppance but only after he has ruined his marriage and committed serial adultry. Barbara struggles along for the sake of the children but she, too, is driven off the rails by Simon who never quite leaves her life.
I found this to be a well told, slightly old fashioned story by an author who writes well. Her stories are set in a timeframe with which I am not particularly familiar: the 1920s and 30s and I have found this to be very interesting from a personal perspective. She is very good at the anatomy of a failing, doomed marriage and although the subject matter might seem off-putting it does, nevertheless provide a page turning story as you follow the inevitable path of doom. There are few light moments in this book but even so it is entertaining and a good read. I would recommend this to someone feeling a little jaded who wants something different from chick lit or romantic fiction, especially as it is set in a little used timeframe.

    Author: Deborah Noyes
    Narrator: Justine Eyre
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-01-10
    Publisher: Candlewick on Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In her classic ghost story "Kerfol", Edith Wharton tells the tale of Anne de Barrigan, a young Frenchwoman convicted of murdering her husband, the jealous Yves de Cornault. The elderly lord was found dead on the stairs, apparently savaged by a pack of dogs, though there were no dogs - no live dogs - at Kerfol that day.
In this remarkable collection of intertwining short stories, Deborah Noyes takes us back to the haunted manor and tells us Anne de Barrigan's story through the sympathetic eyes of her servant girl. Four more tales slip forward in time, peering in on a young artist, a hard-drinking party girl, a young American couple, and a deaf gardener who now tends the Kerfol estate. All these souls are haunted by the ghosts of Kerfol, the dead dogs, the sensual yet uneasy relationships, and the bitter taste of revenge.

    Gorgeous!
I absolutely loved this book. The writing was brilliant! I would definitely recommend it to anyone lusting after a lost love, or just looking for a great ghost story. The best book I've read in a long time!
    good writing, weak plot points
I honestly didn't know what to expect from this book because I've been trying to branch out more and discover books that I haven't heard about before. This was one of the books in that little experiment that I picked up from the library. I thought that it would be interested just because of the ghosts and murder. Then I realized it was several interconnecting stories and I was even more intrigued. While it didn't completely impress me and isn't a favorite, it also isn't a waste of time and was definitely enjoyable.
I think that my favorite tale has to be the last not, and not because it's the most recent. That and the first were the ones I connected to the most because the characters felt closer to my own age and were more relatable. I liked how every story had a different person with a distinct personality to fixate on, giving me an idea of what it was like living in that time period and dealing with this haunted house. Its history was gruesome and the horrors kept piling up as I flipped through the pages.
While there were some parts where the plot dragged, I had enough interest in everything to carry on. It did help that each story was fairly short, twenty or thirty pages long, so the entire novel was short as well. I don't think that I'll be rereading this, but I will check and see if Deborah Noyes has written anything else. Her writing style was really gripping and great.
It captured my imagination enough to frighten me a little while I was reading it, but continued to haunt my thoughts long after
THE GHOSTS OF KERFOL presents five new tales based on a ghost story by Edith Wharton. The book begins with a narration of the original events as told by a household maid. The house is kept under the absolute control of its master, Yves de Cornault. While he carefully maintains the appearance of generosity and goodwill with his neighbors, the household is run with severity, and none suffers more than his new wife Anne. Isolated in the country manor with no company, her every move is monitored by her husband and the household staff.
Noticing her loneliness, and eager to display his wealth, Yves brings Anne a little dog.

    An alternate history
Would you consider the audio edition of The King's Mistress to be better than the print version?
Yes because of the narrator Nicolette Mc Kenzie, she makes the characters come alive and you can feel their presence , its amazing.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The King's Mistress?
There are many moments that stick int he mind , it made you think of how sometimes history is subjective, and how little we really knew of what went on which makes this version plausible if improbable.
What about Nicolette McKenzies performance did you like?
All of it she is a talented performer.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    there were many moments .
wonderful story, nice pace by narrator
This was an interesting book to listen to which spanned years of Alice Perrers life. I greatly enjoyed the rich history and fine details and stories about Alice's life and perhaps how things could have been in the real life of Dame Alice. She is not vilified here as in history and offers a different perspective to this notorious figure and how she seemed to 'helplessly' fall into the life she had. I enjoyed the book and although there were some brief moments of boredom which lasts a few moments, overall it sets a nice pace for a period piece.

    intense emotional rollercoaster
WOW! Great book! Very intense and emotional...I actually had to put the book down a couple times through the beginning to catch my breath and gather myself back together. But once I started again I couldn't stop because I had to know how things were going to turn out for Jen, the main character! It's very hard for me to stop and take even this brief moment to write this since I am dying to get into the second book! The descriptions of what happened to Jen and the fear and pain she endured are vivid so brace yourself ... but all good writing should make us feel something right ... even if it's scary! Mrs. Adams did a great job of describing how trauma can run your life, how hard it is to get out from under it and that it may never fully go away, but that if you keep good, loving people around you and work really hard you can get through it and be happy once again! Now I must go so I can get into the next book...if you're reading this before purchase...save yourself a little bit of grief and get the 2nd book now also! That way you won't have to wait to dive right in and believe me you'll want to!!
Buckel Up! Hang on for one screaming hair raising ride.

    I finished this book.
I finished this book because I paid for it. The plot is thin, the characters puerile, the writing sophomoric, the environment questionable, and the research thin. The only thing that might be worse is the narrator. I've listened to 100's of books, and this is the only one which prompted me to write a review.
