  • Jesus Jargon: Spiritual

Join Pastors Clint and Michael as they explore what Christians mean by the word "Spiritual." Living in a culture that elevates "spirituality" above religious practices, Christians would do well to return to the fundamentals of Christian spirituality and rediscover the beautiful promise that the Holy Spirit lives within us. Don't miss this conversation if you have ever struggled to begin a new "spiritual practice" or felt guilty that you aren't "spiritual enough" as the pastors will explore the freedom and joy that can be found in a healthy Christian understanding of our spiritual nature.

If you would like to explore this topic further, be sure to check our Practicing Faith series where we introduce a variety of spiritual practices for Christian life and discipleship.

  • Jesus Jargon: Ecumenical

Join Pastors Clint and Michael as they explore what Christians mean by the word "ecumenical." While maybe not a word commonly spoken within the normal life of a congregation, modern church denominations have invested a great deal of time and effort in fostering partnerships between Christians all throughout the world. The ecumenical movement has resulted in local congregations recognizing that despite all of our differences, there is real value in serving our communities with other churches, denominations, and faith traditions, seeking to partner wherever we are able. The ecumenical conversation moves the local church to realize that the whole church extends far beyond the walls of one building, throughout the entire world and calls each individual Christian to find partnerships and mutual cooperation wherever we can.

  • Jesus Jargon: Salvation

Join Pastors Clint and Michael as they explore what Christians mean by the word "salvation." While central to our understanding of what it means to be people of faith, the Christian understanding of salvation is much more rich and nuanced than if someone just says the "sinners prayer." The Pastors discuss what it means to be saved and how it isn't just a one time event but an entire life of faith, fellowship, and learning. In truth, the less told story of salvation is that it is about more than just our eternal home, it transforms how we live and serve in our entire lived life of faith.

  • Jesus Jargon: Mission

Join Pastors Clint and Michael as they explore what Christians mean by the word "mission." The mission of the church has existed from the very moment that Jesus gave the great commission but the expression of that mission has taken many forms. The pastors explain how the mission of the church is distinct from the the secular understanding of organizations missions. They also discuss how the term "missional" has become used to describe the church's attempt to reclaim a full sense of mission by each member. Ultimately, the pastors explore how the call to mission is central to the DNA of every church in general and every Christian in particular.

  • Jesus Jargon: Conservative & Liberal

Join Pastors Clint and Michael as they explore the terms "Conservative" and "Liberal" from the Christian perspective. You may be surprised to discover that these two labels have existed in some measure throughout the history of the church and a robust understanding of each enables us to see how God has providentially led the church through very different times and seasons. Though we live in a particularly politically charged moment, Christians would do well to understand how these labels can function as a tool to empathetically understand each other instead of cultural battle lines within the Christian church.

  • Jesus Jargon: Biblical

Pastors Clint and Michael begin a new series called Jesus Jargon in which they discuss some of the often misunderstood words of the Christian faith. In this episode, they discuss the term "Biblical." Biblical has been used to describe everything from churches, to preaching, to books, even though it isn't always clear what it means. The Pastors explore some of the nuances of being "Biblical," how the Reformers helped lay us a foundation to respect the authority of scripture, and how every Christian is responsible to grow in their knowledge and faith through the Biblical witness to Jesus Christ.

If you want a basic overview of the major men and women of scripture, be sure to check out of previous series, The Real People of Faith.

  • Reflections on 2020: Roger & Donna Harms

Today, the Pastors talk with Roger and Donna Harms about their experience navigating through 2020. We discuss what it feels like to be labeled "vulnerable," how Covid immediately impacted family relationships of all kinds, and what it was like to address unrelated medical concerns in the midst of lock-downs and social distancing. We are deeply grateful for the Harm's vulnerable honesty and for the determinedly optimistic and faith-filled perspective that they share so freely in our conversation. We hope that in hearing their story, we might all find some clarity in the midst of our own journeys in this challenging season.

Special thanks to all of those who we have interviewed during our Lenten Reflection season, we have been deeply blessed by each!

  • Reflections on 2020: Jason Harrington

Today, we the Pastors talk with the President of Lakes Regional Health Jason Harrington about his experience leading during the pandemic. Our wide ranging conversation explores some of the strength and values of Midwest communities, communicating during a crisis, and separating fact from opinion. We thank Jason for taking time to talk with us and hope that you find the conversation interesting.

For the season of Lent, our Wednesday podcast will feature interviews with individuals who reflect upon the struggles, triumphs, and lessons learned throughout 2020. Though everyone's experience of the pandemic and its ensuing struggles are unique, it has become quickly apparent how many of these challenges we have shared and how we can stand to learn much from each other.

  • Reflections on 2020: All or Nothing

This episode of the Pastor Talk Podcast features the fifth in our our series of Pastors' reflections on lessons learned during the last year. In this episode, the Pastors explore how over the course of the last year, there has seemed to be an increase in "all or nothing" thinking. Incredibly complex situations ranging from health, to economy, to politics have been over simplified with a false range of binary choices. The Pastors reflect upon how our own faith tradition calls us to engage with the world around us with wisdom and discernment, refusing to give in to "all or nothing" arguments when the truth is far more nuanced.
