It was a pleasure to interview Hon Ian MacFarlane on Tough Talk with Jody Rowe. Whilst the podcast is centered around Energy transition it was also an opportunity to talk frankly about politics, board roles and many other subjects. The experience Ian has is enormous and he is passionate about successes such as the Toowoomba Second range crossing and the development of the Coal, Gas and Agriculture industry in SE Queensland.
Ian was elected to Federal Parliament in 1998 and retired in 2016. He is Australia’s longest serving Federal Resources and Energy Minister and the Coalition’s longest serving Federal Industry and Innovation Minister in both Cabinet and Shadow Ministerial positions. Ian has
What an exceptional resume of experience well qualified to talk Energy transition and quite frankly a reality check of politics.
Thank you, Ian, it was a pleasure.
Part 2 - Ian continues with a great conversation about Powering Africa with Globeleq.
Ian Coxon and I worked together at QGC, and we have stayed in contact for a number of years. If there was going to be a challenging market it would be Africa, many countries within this massive continent, varying political climates, not a great connectivity to trade energy and it so it goes on however it is emerging rapidly and Globeleq is one to learn from and how they are very successful in their growth of powering Africa.
Ian Coxon is the Chief Financial Officer for Globeleq and leads the Finance team for all Globeleq and its entities. He has worked in the energy industry for more than 20 years, leading finance teams in North and South America, Europe, Australia and North Africa.
He has experience across the full development cycle, from development and major capital projects through to operations working in a range of joint venture and other commercial arrangements. Prior to his current role at Globeleq, Ian has held senior finance roles at companies including the BG Group and Royal Dutch Shell.
When I reflect on Energy transition, I draw on my network for interesting people and new ways of working. Rowe Advisory has known Globeleq for a number of years now and have admired their approach to a complex market such as Africa.

Great podcast with Dr Patrick Hartley a guest on Tough Talk with Jody Rowe Podcast. Patrick discussed the role of the CSIRO and the Hydrogen project. The hydrogen industry mission will support global decarbonization through a commercially viable Australian hydrogen industry comprising both domestic and export value chains by 2030.
Dr. Patrick Hartley is the leader of CSIRO’s Hydrogen Industry Mission. In this role he is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of a major new national research initiative which was launched in May 2021, focused on delivering research, development and demonstrations which enable the scaleup of Australia’s domestic and export hydrogen industries.
In 2018, he established CSIRO’s Hydrogen Energy Systems Future Science Platform. This major initiative focusses on addressing research challenges which underpin the development of hydrogen energy value chains in Australia. During this time, he co-led the formulation of CSIRO’s ‘National Hydrogen Roadmap, and, with the Chief Scientist of Australia, the briefing paper ‘Hydrogen for Australia’s Future’ which was presented to the Council of Australian Government’s (COAG) Energy council in August 2018.
From 2014-2019 he led the Oil, Gas and Fuels research program within CSIRO's Energy Business Unit. The program comprises 85 research staff and students working on applied research projects which span the energy resources value chain, with a particular emphasis on the sustainable development of Australia’s petroleum resources and on the associated challenges of large-scale carbon dioxide storage.
Patrick graduated with a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College, London in 1994, and was subsequently awarded a research fellowship from the Royal Society, London, which allowed him to take up full time research fellowship roles at the University of Melbourne from 1994 to 1998, when he joined CSIRO as a research scientist. Since then, he has led research teams working with national and international large corporations and SMEs to develop new technologies for applications in drug delivery, energy storage, water treatment and petrochemical recovery. He has co-authored more than 90 peer reviewed publications almost all in collaboration with university and/or other research institution partners.
Patrick has occupied senior research management roles in CSIRO since 2006 and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He holds an Adjunct Professorship at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.
