This sermon looks at Paul's concluding instructions concerning the gifts of the Spirit active in the church. His overall concern is that the gifts in practice contribute to the good order and discipline of the church. Therefore, he is much more interested in edification and exhortation than in spectacular manifestations of the Spirit, because edification and exhortation are more needed in the church. Because of this, it is always preferable to strive for intelligibility in communication. Teaching, exhortation, prophecy, all of this must be understood in order to be effective. Therefore, as Paul advises, it is preferable to speak 5 words in instruction to 10,000 words in tongues. Love always desires what is best for the other, and the church needs teaching from God that can be understood and applied. Love will last for all of eternity, long after the gifts of the Spirit fade away. As such, the church must focus first on cultivating love before any of the spiritual gifts.
