Loisann's Hope House Executive Director Cait Woodward along with board member Wil Gravatt preview Loisann's Day at Maury Park on Sunday,  October 19th from 12 to 3 p.m. for Loisann’s Day. It's a  family-friendly event with food, games and information. Six local restaurants will compete for the title of Best Burger in the ‘Burg, with attendees getting a chance to sample and vote. Beyond the fun, the event also shines a light on the critical work Loisann’s Hope House is doing to support families facing homelessness and eviction — including transportation vouchers and eviction prevention. Lithium-ion batteries — found in everything from phones to power tools — are becoming an increasing fire hazard in homes. Stafford Fire and Rescue Deputy Fire Chief Ben Gouldman and Public Information Officer Katie Brady warn that improper charging, overheating, and incorrect disposal of these batteries are causing more fires than ever before. The growing risk stems from everyday misuse — like charging devices on flammable surfaces or using off-brand chargers. They stress the importance of following manufacturer guidelines and never throwing lithium batteries in the trash. As battery-powered technology becomes more common, officials say public awareness is key to preventing dangerous — and potentially deadly — fires in the home.

Kathryn Willis and UMW Museums Director Scott Harris. After more than 180 years--Eliza Monroe Hay — daughter of President James Monroe — is finally returning home. Her remains were recently recovered and repatriated from Paris through the determined efforts of Kathryn Willis and others. On October 23rd, Eliza will be reinterred alongside her family at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. The event marks the powerful end to a years-long mission.

Earl Sam, Doug Gately, Nathan Brothers, Joey Kirchgessner and Ann Kloeckner preview the 12th annual Jazz 4 Justice. The event happens November 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Dodd Auditorium at the University of Mary Washington.  Jazz 4 Justice brings together great music and a great cause, with proceeds benefiting both Legal Aid Works and UMW music scholarships. Spotsylvania County Schools social workers Michelle Patton Swisher and Lisa Dolan preview the annual Rock Out, Knock Out Homelessness drive on October 3rd and 4th at the Southpoint Walmart. The event runs Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., collecting essential items for students and families experiencing housing insecurity. All donations go to the Treasure House, a school-based resource center located at Massaponax High School that provides clothing, toiletries, and basic necessities. The drive supports families across the school division who rely on Treasure House throughout the year. You're encouraged to stop by, donate, and help knock out homelessness one item at a time.

Aimee Hardy previews the Josh Hardy Superhero Celebration each year in memory of Josh, who loved superheroes and inspired many during his battle with cancer. The event, happening this year on October 25th at Strangeways Brewing on Lansdowne Road, celebrates Josh’s legacy. It’s also a fundraiser for the Fairy Godmother Project, a nonprofit that supports families facing pediatric cancer.
