The surprising outcome of the midterms has certainly disappointed Republicans and conservatives who saw the environment as ripe for a red wave. A number of hard lessons will have to be learned about the failures to capitalize on historic levels of inflation, crime, and parental activism against radical indoctrination of their children and translate them into electoral victories from coast to coast.

However, we should not lose sight of the fact that Republicans likely won control of the House of Representatives. That alone will arrest Joe Biden’s progressive agenda. It will also restore accountability for an administration that has assumed imperial power, especially in its self-appropriation for a bailout of Academia.

The Rolling Stones said it best: You can’t always get what you want, but sometimes you get what you need. America needed a check on Biden, and Republicans did well enough to win one. If the GOP learns the hard lessons of this midterm, they can apply them for an even more critical presidential election in two years.

Republicans who are disappointed with the red wave stopping after Florida and New York need to recall that controlling the House—whether it’s by one vote or 31 votes—is the biggest victory as it effectively stops President Biden’s and the Democrats’ worst ideas, including expanding the Supreme Court and adding the District of Columbia as a state. 

This is a victory that’s been two cycles coming as the House GOP picked up many seats in 2020. The gains—in both cycles—are largely the result of the work done by Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. 

Republicans in the House Caucus should move quickly to install the leader as the Speaker-designate along with Steve Scalise as Majority Leader. McCarthy has done a superb job of holding a diverse caucus together over many years in leadership and especially since 2018. 

McCarthy is a master coalition-builder and a superb candidate-recruiter, from his days in leadership in the California assembly through to his soon to be completed ascent to the Speaker’s Chair. 

Some in legacy media are thirsting for an internal battle with which to hobble the new Republican majority out of the gate. Salem believes strongly in McCarthy’s vision and ability and we urge every member to quickly coalesce around McCarthy and Scalise and then move on to the agenda laid out in the commitment to America. 

It’s taken four years to get back to where the business of the House is governed by Republicans. McCarthy led the effort over the past two cycles. Now it’s time for him to lead from the Speaker’s chair. 

He’s smart, good-humored and—crucially—hard-working.

Congratulations to every Republican who stayed the course and captured the majority. Our hope is their teamwork is the news of the next few months and not arguments about anything else. 

Unify your allies, divide your opponents is an old rule of politics.

We’ve heard all too much about right-wing election deniers and conspiracy theorists. Set aside the fact that the left has its fair share—Hillary Clinton and Stacy Abrams among them.

There’s no excuse for ignoring issues that promote doubts about the fairness of U.S. elections. Why, for example, were results available by midnight 50 years ago—but today, it can take days or weeks for elections to be resolved? It raises suspicions, true or not, that vote counting continues until enough ballots are found for the “right” candidate to win. It doesn’t help when politicians preemptively warn of delays, especially when they know their party is in for a tough election cycle.

Worst of all, the kneejerk government response to voter concerns has been to stigmatize them as crazy. Enough. If we can put a man on the moon, our government can run transparent, efficient, fair elections.

Let’s press them to do so. Starting now.

No one doubts that the midterm elections this week did not result in the “red wave” many—including yours truly—were expecting. Polls and the political environment all pointed to “red wave” that never materialized. However, not dominating an election cycle does not mean losing an election cycle.

Ron DeSantis had a commanding win in Florida. 

At the moment, it appears clear that the GOP will control the House of Representatives. That alone will stop Joe Biden and his team from pushing their progressive agenda for the next two years and force them to negotiate. 

Control of the Senate is still outstanding—and still could result in Republican control of the upper chamber as well.

A red wave would have been satisfying, and a measure of justice after two years of demagogic incompetence from Biden. But a narrow win is still a win, and a learning experience on how to build for a bigger win in 2024.

Call it the “Chicken Little” election. According to the media, the sky was going to fall if the nation voted Republican in anything, God forbid, that could be considered a wave.

President Biden kicked off the apocalyptic party with his “red speech,” trashing MAGA Republicans as an existential threat to American democracy. His media sycophants faithfully picked up the refrain.

By late October, MSNBC personalities had used the words fascism or fascist more than sixteen hundred times this year.  The “View’s” Sunny Hostin compared suburban women who vote Republican to roaches. “Historian” Michael Beschloss wins some sort the prize, though. What’s at stake? He said: “whether we will be a democracy in the future, whether our children will be arrested and conceivably killed.” 

The press has become a laughingstock. What will they say a year from now?—when our children are still alive and we’re amid a routine presidential election season?

These people have jumped the shark. They’re responsible for the collapse of their own credibility—and it is richly deserved.

So here we are: Election Day 2022. And the choices before us are stark.

For the past two years, we’ve had the House, the Senate and the Presidency controlled by one party.

And we have seen—and felt—the fruits of that.

Control of both Houses of Congress is now at stake. The contrast of worldviews and policy agendas separating the Democrats from the Republicans has never been more stark.

Moral issues are on the table. Religious liberty is on the table.

Decades-high inflation and financial issues are on the table. In fact, they dominate the cycle. 

But the protection of liberty, religious liberty, is also part of the equation—I’m speaking about the classical defense of liberty, the vital importance of free associations, and the necessary alignment of human government with human nature.

Many of you have already voted.

For the rest of you: Let me ask you to do your part. Don’t let the hot nature of our tense public debate prevent you from being faithful with your vote.

Your vote is your voice, and it is your stewardship.

But—I bet you’ve noticed: Trump isn’t on the ballot this year.

Americans can see for themselves what is: skyrocketing consumer prices, falling real wages, and disruptions in goods and services. And that’s just the economics. Crime is rising. We have a crisis in public education. Then there’s the new hordes of homeless. The question this election asks you is who are you going to believe? the propaganda outlets for the ruling class or your own two eyes?

Remember, it’s not enough to gripe, you have to act.

It’s not your average midterm. Oregon could elect a Republican governor for the first time in 40 years! New York and California Democrats are suddenly in competitive races.

No one thought Texas Republican Mayra Flores—running in a special election to represent a deep blue district—would be competitive.
Biden carried the district by 16 points! But she won and could win again—hastening the movement of Hispanics toward the Republicans.

The other woman to watch is the mama bear—perhaps in your home and certainly in your community.

Suburban mothers are done with the radical agenda being forced on their kids…

We could be on the cusp of a realignment election.

Don’t just sit back and watch. Make sure your vote—and the vote of all eligible voters in your household—is part of the final tally.

As Election Day approaches, analysts and pundits debate whether the “red wave” of Republican wins will actually materialize. But the term “wave” may not fully capture the unique political environment of 2022. The confluence of catastrophes created and facilitated by Democrats and Joe Biden has presented the worst electoral context for a governing party in decades—if ever.

Inflation rages at its highest levels since Jimmy Carter’s landslide loss in 1980. Crime rates have skyrocketed back to levels last seen more than a generation ago. The southern border is being overwhelmed. 

Add to that the education issue—the radical sexual and political indoctrination of children in public schools. That issue alone turned the 2021 elections in Virginia and New Jersey into an unexpected revolt at the ballot box.

We may never have seen this perfect storm of outrage in electoral politics. Rather than a red wave, we may instead see a black swan election—a full-scale repudiation unparalleled in modern American history. It will never have been more deserved.
