“This is a man's world, this is a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl” - James Brown
On today’s episode, we’re talking about toxic masculinity. This newly named cultural pillar upholds the notion that the idea of “manliness” perpetuates domination, homophobia, and aggression.
Today’s guest has been working in the professional sports industry for the last seven years, and shares his experiences observing, participating in, and calling out toxic masculinity.
Throughout the episode, he describes some of the more common occurrences where toxic masculinity takes over in the sports world- from an inability to discuss mental health to a direct rejection of any player who steps outside of tradition. He recognizes that while improvements have been made in the last few years, there is still plenty of work to do.
Later, we unpack some of his own experiences as a man and discuss both his internal beliefs and the culture of his friend group. He vulnerably shares how difficult challenging certain biases and traditions can be, and together we identify ways that he can affect change through holding himself and his peers more accountable.
