(http://blog.techpodcasts.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/iOS-7-image-300x153.jpg)Daniel J. Lewis shares his thoughts on iOS 7, it's similarities with Android, how it's killing competition, and what you need to know even if you don't have an iPhone.
Not an Apple fanboy
Before I begin, you should know that I am far from an Apple fanboy. I used Android and BlackBerry smartphones, grew up with Windows, and I'm often tweeting snarky remarks from @theRamenNoodle (http://twitter.com/theRamenNoodle) whenever there's an Apple announcement.
But I do have an Apple house—MacBook Pros, iPhone 5, iPad 3, iPod Nano, Time Capsule, and a strong desire to get an Apple TV. I'm happy with my platform decisions, but I will readily defend the other options.
Borrowing from Android
iOS 7 will receive a huge design change. I question the readability of many of the changes. But I'm most surprised, but also pleased, at how many aspects of iOS 7 seem directly inspired by Android.
* Control center
* Unlock screen
* Notification center
* Multitasking
* Improved "share to"?
* Layers look like Windows 7
Killing competition?
Apple killing the competition? No way! While they will offer new services that will steal some users from competing services, the power users will probably prefer the competition.
* iCloud Keychain > LastPass and 1Password
* iTunes Radio > Pandora and Spotify
* Siri > Siri
Thoughts for website owners
You may not care at all about iOS 7, or you may think it's disgusting. But if you have a website, you need to make sure you're optimizing for Bing and not just Google. iOS 7 will use Bing search results for Siri queries, but the WWDC Keynote demonstrated Google results from Safari.
Predictions for iPhone 5s
Yes, yes. iPhone 5s will be "the most amazing iPhone ever." Duh.
But realistically, here are my predictions for what will set iPhone 5s apart from iPhone 5.
* Voice-recognition without data connection (making it much faster)
* All the same-old stuff: faster CPU, better camera, maybe more RAM, maybe a 128 GB version
