TPToA Podcast 404 – Thunderbolts*

Listen Later

Thunderbolts*

Marvel has been pretty hit and miss of late, It’s TV has been great but some of the films have felt a little under-cooked. We have had a new Captain America film which some thought flew too close to the sun so now it’s time for the B-team lineup to take centre stage. Will this NEW film AVENGE the sacred timeline? Will it be a bolt of exciting lightning or more of a belated and low energy roll of thunder? Or…will it change it’s title 4 days after release confusing the hell out of everyone?!

All 4 of our team of loveable misfits are on board for this show and we each had a fair bit to say about Thunderbolts* especially that damn asterisk!

Synopsis:

Ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes — Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker — embarks on a dangerous mission that forces them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.

Speaker 1

Lena. Being the hero. There is no higher calling. Your sister understood something about that. I should have come back for you. No.

Speaker 2

That’s just a fairy tale.

Speaker 3

I was in high school when The Avengers came. Kind of strange that it’s all over now. No one’s coming to save. The day.

Speaker 4

I think we. Are we can be the ones that are coming?

Speaker 2

But you have the wrong people. We have all done bad things.

Speaker 4

Look, I’ve been where you are. The past doesn’t go away, so you can either live with it forever. Or you can do something about it.

Speaker 1

I am a void. Look what you are unleashed. You can’t outrun the emptiness.

Speaker 2

We can’t do. This. No one here is a hero.

Speaker

We all have things that we regret.

Speaker 5

But I have so many.

Speaker 1

When I look at you. I don’t see your mistakes. That’s probably need each other.

Speaker 2

We can’t stop him alone. No one can. But we can find a way. Together.

Speaker

Marvel Studios thunderballs.

Speaker 1

Under pressure.

Dion

Ohh hello and welcome to the periodic Table of Wars AM. I haven’t done that because. Kept talking over it and now I’m. Finally, gonna go to the live. There you go. Now you can see my lovely.

Quinny

Ohh.

Dion

Sorry here our dulcet voices as we welcome you to the latest in the 497 thousandth Marvel release. Thunderbolts. Asterisks.

Quinny

No.

Dion

Asterisk, asterisk, Asterix, oblix.

Quinny

As to Ricks is a different thing that came out on Netflix this week and it’s quite entertaining. But anyway, we’ll come.

Dion

Back to that later. Well, that’s not a yes. Going against the grain, it isn’t actually. And they film we’re doing in this this month, but we are doing a film that. She’s here anyway. We’re doing thunderballs, and then we’ll do anime for the rest. Of it. How’s? That sound? Yeah. How are you, Peter. Jill. Quinny. Are you good?

Jill

Yes, I’m well.

Peta

Living.

Dion

Living great. I mean this is.

Quinny

I I what are you living for, Pete? That’s my question.

Peta

Ah, look, that’s that’s a great question. If I knew the answer to that, I’d be. Having a better? Time. Ohh no.

Dion

OK, so like I just wanna say real low vibe. But that’s kind. Of on that’s kind of on brand for this. Movie.

Peta

Hey, you know what I’ve just realised that we have a genuine problem.

Quinny

Ohh.

Dion

Oh, really? What? What is?

Peta

Next Tuesday at 8:00 PM, we shouldn’t be watching Twitch. We should be watching ABC.

Dion

That. Genuine problems.

Quinny

Ohh no.

Jill

Why? What’s on?

Dion

Porquet.

Peta

Little little show, little show called Kimberly.

Dion

Oh my God.

Peta

It’s the reason for my vowing exhaustion.

Dion

Is that ohh is. This some sort of deep dive into Kim Kardashian.

Peta

That’s exactly what it is that like? Nailed it.

Speaker

Yeah.

Dion

Yeah, but it’s the order to sell to Australian audience. Had to call it Kimberly.

Quinny

Because that’s that is her true name. Only in Australia do you believe.

Dion

Kardashian. Yeah. Yeah. No. What? I look forward to is, like, about 8:00 as we just switched to a live feed of the ABC and then Pete can just, you know, we’ll just review it in front of Pete cause.

Quinny

That’ll be reviewing. We’ll, we’ll do it. We’ll do live.

Peta

Reactions do I do produce this commentary over the top of?

Quinny

Hell yeah, hell yeah.

Jill

Should be periodic table of Gogglebox.

Peta

It will start with. This is the scene. That ruined my life. I hope you enjoy it.

Dion

Yeah, we went back and forth on this scene for seven years. And or what felt like 7 years. Yeah. Alright. Hello and hello to everyone in the chat. Sorry, I forgot to. Say hello to everyone in the chat.

Quinny

Yeah. Hi, Chad. And there’s there’s some some. There’s a new name in there. We haven’t seen Bob Franklin for quite.

Dion

It’s it’s.

Quinny

Some time, yeah, yeah.

Dion

It’s going to be may. No, here we go. Another Bob. I’m no. I’m quite sceptical about Bobby. After watching Thunderbolts Asterix. Yeah, OK. So I’ve lost my train. Thought keep going. No, someone figured out. What are we doing?

Quinny

Going well, OK. So what with 36? I think with 36 or 37 movies deep now.

Jill

Lord good.

Quinny

And and and multiple TV series and animated series and not many tie in video games. Actually. So how we all doing on our marvel how we feeling?

Jill

A bit so. So after end game. To be honest, I did really enjoy the marvels even though that got panned. What else did I enjoy? I feel like there was.

Quinny

Yeah.

Speaker

Right.

Jill

Another one in. There that I liked. Can’t remember.

Dion

The marvels.

Jill

Just ******* said that.

Quinny

Jesus, Shanxi.

Dion

I know. Shang Shang chi. No. Didn’t enjoy Shang chi.

Jill

That was before end game.

Quinny

That wasn’t Nope.

Dion

Yeah. See, well, welcome to the overload. Now everyone’s like, I don’t know when that was released, it all sort.

Quinny

Nope.

Jill

It’s right.

Quinny

Of blurs into one. I mean we since then we have had Shanghai, we’ve had Black Widow, we’ve had Thor love and Thunder quantum Mania, Black Panther kind of forever. There’s been a Spiderman far from home. That’s. All post end game.

Jill

Yeah, that one was good. I liked the Doctor Strange one.

Quinny

Oh yeah, yeah.

Speaker

Yeah. Yeah.

Dion

Deadpool and Wolverine.

Quinny

Yeah, yeah.

Jill

Yeah, it’s adjacent, but sure.

Dion

Yeah, and what about?

Jill

Yeah, but it’s like in the publicity this was. Really getting touted as the best film since end. Game and I was like. Well, that’s a strong call.

Quinny

It’s it’s a. It is a big. Call, isn’t it?

Jill

I made about 50% of. The stuff that came out after end game. Was terrible, but there was some good stuff in there.

Quinny

So OK to to to be clear, we got Spiderman far from home, which came out after end game. Then Black Widow Shang Chi eternals.

Jill

Bing Bing.

Speaker

Booze.

Quinny

Spiderman. No way home. Ding. Doctor Strange. Multiverse of Madness, love and Thunder, Thor.

Jill

Bing.

Peta

Boo.

Quinny

Well, kinda forever.

Speaker

Boo.

Quinny

Man, what’s quantum mania? Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Dion

Boo. I’m officially petitioning to have our rating system changed to Jills Ding Boo or Air. Ding Ding Boo.

Jill

Ohh Brave New world Boo.

Quinny

I was going to say Deadpool and Wolverine and and then brave New World and that brings us to Thunderbolts and how quick you want to read it. Ding asterisk.

Dion

Asterix I Ding it.

Speaker

Ah.

Jill

Ding Ding no more out of 100. The dinger book.

Dion

Give it. Date.

Quinny

Yeah, yeah. I mean, for, for, for 10 years, we read a podcast where our rating system was cool.

Dion

We gave it, we gave it a dig.

Quinny

Or shy, or men.

Jill

I’m shot.

Quinny

And and if we. Didn’t know what the **** it was. It was a. Bucket of soap. So there you.

Dion

Go God, that’s that’s.

Jill

Go back to what works.

Dion

That’s old. That’s old ratings that I can’t do that I think. Isn’t that still under, like, copy? Isn’t that under copyright, though? All those ratings.

Quinny

It’s it’s, it’s still embargoed.

Dion

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Quinny

Yes, 100% OK. So there we go. That’s what we’ve done since then plus Wanda vision.

Jill

Not going to even get into the TV.

Quinny

Though we kind of have to a little bit because there’s at least one character that is TV only from this.

Dion

It’s true. Ohh yeah, yeah, there we go. Finally comes out. You’re like, yeah. **** because.

Quinny

Hmm. So you kind of like 2-2 fully understand this movie. You have to have seen to like to get all of the characters you have. Yep. Ant-Man to Black Widow.

Jill

Ant-Man 2. Black Widow.

Dion

Yep.

Jill

Falcon and The Winter Soldier TV series.

Dion

Show, yeah.

Quinny

And.

Dion

Where did? Where did red guardian?

Jill

That was in Black Widow.

Speaker

Black sweetheart.

Dion

Yeah.

Quinny

And then to kind of work out where we’re at with Elena. Yeah, Black Widow. But then.

Peta

The world.

Dion

And Val. Who was introducing the TV, wasn’t she?

Peta

I thought it was end of end of Black Widow.

Jill

Yeah, yeah. Although she was in something else before that.

Quinny

She’s.

Dion

Umm oh, yeah. Also Hawkeye. Yeah, it’s a good one. Yep. Yeah. Hawkeye cause Yelena was in Hawkeye.

Quinny

What? That’s right. Yeah, but that wasn’t like I was thinking, like if you hadn’t seen, like, if you’ve seen Black Widow, you’ve you’ve you’ve at least met Yelena.

Dion

I mean just. Look at how how we’re struggling here.

Jill

We first see. Val in Falcon in The Winter Soldier was she?

Quinny

In that she showed up right at the end to give Walker a job.

Jill

Yeah.

Quinny

But I’m not entirely sure where that.

Jill

I think that was no. That was the first time we.

Quinny

Happens.

Jill

Saw her.

Quinny

Right.

Jill

Yes.

Peta

And then Falcon and The Winter Soldier. The movie does situate you in a. Time and place for this film.

Quinny

Yes. Yeah. Look, you know, if it had been Falcon in The Winter Soldier, the movie, I probably would have enjoyed brave new world more as it was, it was incredible. Hulk 2 without the Incredible Hulk, it was a very strange.

Speaker

Yeah.

Quinny

Choice. Anyway, there we go. We’re now all all caught up, caught up on the **** that you have to have watched before you get to watch this. And it’s not true. I don’t think you do have.

Jill

Now you’re.

Peta

To have watched all of it? No, you really don’t.

Jill

There’s plenty of concepts.

Peta

You know what it is? A classic freaking hero’s journey. So you can come in with 0 context and it’s still. Enjoy the narrative arc because it is a very classic. Is a very classically structured narrative and character arc, and that is not a criticism.

Jill

No, Pete, you said to me at the end you were like I. Liked Avengers one? Yeah.

Speaker 5

Again.

Peta

Yeah, I saw Avengers 1 multiple times at the cinemas like I’m. I’m happy to see something in that classic team base. You know, Hero’s journey structure, life, freaking love that structure.

Quinny

Yeah. I mean, there’s a reason that we’ve been doing it for so long because it kind of works. Yeah. And this one really was leaning in hard on a lot of the those heroes journey, you know, tropes like.

Peta

Particularly as it pertains to the mismatched team. Yes, which is fun.

Quinny

Yeah. Hmm. Yeah, absolutely it’s.

Peta

Just in the background, just looking grumpy.

Speaker

I’m not, I’m.

Dion

Not against it is because one of the things I had very low expectations going in and watching the Thunderbolts and I was like, I don’t. I don’t really remember from the comics. I kind of missed the whole thing. I know there’s like a classic Baron Zemo led Thunderbolts. There’s a whole bunch of stuff around it. I totally missed the. Entry character in the comics missed all of that, but this one was just kind of fun because it was dry and dark and kind of knew what it was shooting for and did not do the same thing as I was a bit afraid that was going to not copy, but more mirror Suicide Squad and I felt like it.

Quinny

Yes.

Jill

We were waiting for a sky beam.

Dion

Yeah. Where was the second sky made? When was the?

Quinny

Big we were all waiting for Sky thing.

Dion

You didn’t really do that.

Jill

We got anti Skype aim actually, yeah.

Quinny

And I found it. I found it as.

Jill

Yeah, we got sky darkness.

Dion

Kind of a. Kind of a nuanced.

Quinny

Ground darkness.

Jill

That’s that’s the opposite of.

Quinny

Skyping. Yeah. And it literally was ground darkness, not sky. Being kind of amazing, kind of.

Dion

Nuanced and interesting and a bit kind of sympathetic towards things that aren’t very heroic. Like I really like the fact that they played very heavily into this, that none of these people are heroic. In fact, they’re all pretty ******* terrible. But and I mean, not even not only terrible in the choices that they made, but also how they how effective they are, even all the. Way through during this. Movie. It’s like these guys aren’t great. But they’re the best we’ve got.

Speaker

Yeah.

Quinny

Yeah, they’re not. They’re not heroes. They’re just here.

Dion

And the rest and the and then the rest.

Speaker 1

Oh yeah.

Dion

Is just marketing. Which I kind of feel like, wow, the metaphor of this is this just strong in the Marvel universes it’s like.

Quinny

Yes.

Dion

We don’t have anyone else and the rest is marketing.

Speaker

Excellent.

Quinny

I I must admit, when it when it started, I did have a moment where, like the the I think one of the first things you hear is them talking about impeachment. And I kept I was like that was. A choice too. I mean, admittedly, the last thing we saw was a giant red slash orange president of the United States destroying America. So I mean, starting with impeachment. Be a good ******* start. That’s not a political.

Dion

State is that a metaphor too? Maybe. This just metaphors.

Quinny

Let’s go with it. Why not? Do you want a synopsis? Do you want to know what this is?

Dion

About Ohh wait, before a synopsis the the the query you have to ask the chat is what accent is. When you gonna attempt and I banning one no no red guardian.

Speaker

OK.

Quinny

Ohh.

Dion

You can’t do red guard. It’s too easy. You’ve done it before.

Quinny

Ohh.

Peta

Ohh the disappointment.

Dion

Ohh no.

Jill

How about ********* white Russell?

Quinny

Yeah, well, you know, I was, yeah.

Jill

Tell us about how you were on so many football teams.

Quinny

Yeah. Yeah, I will. OK. Junior varsity. Everything. Right. OK, I’ve got this. Out of my head that it’s just going alright. Alright, alright, that’s good.

Dion

Now just think think more nepo baby, could you?

Quinny

All right. Yeah. OK. I’ve never had to work for anything in my life. Everything has just come to me. I’m junior varsity football captain. And is there music playing yet? I don’t feel like they should be music. Right. OK.

Dion

Yes, there’s music.

Quinny

Ensnared in a death trap and unconventional team of Eddie Heroes and me, the greatest hero that has ever been, that that the other is being Yelena Belova. Bucky Barnes. Bucky. Yeah. Some guy called Red Guardian, ghost, taskmaster and and yours truly. Yeah. The best damn Captain America. OK, OK, maybe not the best. Damn. But I was. I was a good stop. ******* looking at me like that. Anyway, we all embark on a dangerous mission that forces us to to confront the darkest corners of our past. And there’s a guy called Bob. That’s it.

Dion

Well, that was done. Yeah. Excellent. Thanks.

Quinny

Yeah. Thank you. Thanks. Well.

Jill

Excellent synopsis.

Dion

Done. No. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Quinny

Yes. Congratulations. You have. Yeah, you have. You have.

Dion

Finished. Don’t worry, honey. We’re all here with you. We’re not going to abandon.

Quinny

You. Thank you. Thank you. Cause I really need all of the. Support that I can get. Yeah, yeah.

Dion

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Oh.

Quinny

So yeah, I mean, it’s actually a bit of a **** synopsis. So basically a bunch of antiheroes realize that they’ve got a bigger problem, and instead of being wiped out by the. Their erstwhile employer, they find something that they need to fix.

Dion

Yeah. And, you know, isn’t the real treasure the friends we made along the. Way yeah, exactly. But in a good way this time like.

Peta

Yeah.

Quinny

Yeah. No, like, I mean, that is literally the the kind of thing that they’re. Going for but.

Dion

Yeah.

Quinny

It doesn’t feel that cheesy. No, and that’s impressive.

Dion

And also I found this like Thunderbolt a lot funnier than I thought it would be because we all know that sometimes there’s great jokes and they do stuff like that, but they didn’t really put any of that in the trail.

Speaker

Hmm.

Jill

It was all very acerbic. Kind of humour. Yeah, very situational and dark and dry.

Quinny

Hmm.

Dion

Yeah.

Quinny

And character driven. That’s that’s the thing I really liked about it is that, you know, this is this is the humour of characters who are taking potshots at each other based on what we as an audience know about them as well.

Jill

That’s true.

Quinny

Yeah, you know, it’s like the the whole thing with the, the the helmet. So do you like the helmet? Do you like the helmet? Do you do you? Do you like the hat? What’s wrong with the?

Jill

Oh, the hat, do you? Like your hat. What about your?

Quinny

Hat do you like that do. You like the hat? Yeah.

Jill

But you need a helmet.

Quinny

The yeah, like the IT was dry. It was a little biting. But also, you know, there’s pretty broad humor in there too. As soon as Alexei shows.

Peta

Like it’s it’s funny that they kind of nailed the kind of humour that you get from deeply traumatized people, basically because it’s a very special kind of humour.

Speaker 2

Hmm.

Peta

Often the funniest really. If you know any deeply traumatised people, use humor to get through the day like they did, like a little bit God, and they all that tone. Because in a way, this is all about acknowledging that these flawed characters. Are deeply troubled. Yeah. You know, there’s there was felt like a real consistency to the way that was treated. Yes, there were funny moments, but none of the funny moments felt inconsistent to the characters and where they were at and the tone of what we were doing, which was.

Quinny

Hmm.

Peta

Kind of nice.

Speaker

Hmm.

Quinny

Because, yeah, like occasionally the Marvel Universe has kind of skewed a little towards humour. Which has maybe undercut some things like especially in movies like Thor, Love and Thunder and Stuff. It’s like, OK, we’ve, we’ve we’ve missed the balance entirely. And we’re going for gags as opposed to character. And and this one I think really does hit that, that sweet spot of. Yeah, you’re laughing, but you’re laughing with them and you’re not. And if you are laughing at them, they’re also kind of going, you know, it it. Yeah, it really worked.

Speaker

Hmm.

Peta

The the gags are driven by the character, not despite the character Umm, and that’s why they work. And I I think you know the. Characters that have been brought together and you’ve got to remember that I’m really unfamiliar with most of these characters outside of the the cinematic universe. I’m not familiar with anyone from any of the comics or any back story or or anything like that. So like my connection with these characters is purely based on. Having seen the aforementioned properties and hopefully remembering some of the details from the many, many, many things, so that’s like, that’s an interesting moment to me because I’m sure that you guys have a lot more context on on the history of some of these things than than I do.

Quinny

Mm-hmm.

Peta

But for. And and I’ve seen, you know, like Suicide Squad. Well, not the original 1, but, you know, I I listen to your recommendations. So I I think that I had an expectation going in as well about how this kind of like antihero team up would be treated and.

Speaker

Good.

Peta

Like I think that I was kind of like pleasantly surprised to find myself on more of. A character driven. In journey than I expected that was more about the individual characters than it was about how the interaction of you know the IT it wasn’t. It wasn’t just about. Mismatched people, and not every plot point was coming from. Them. Or being mismatched and different and funked up in a different way it it felt like what was driving the story was a little bit deeper than that. And I think that’s maybe what? Not me. Kind of a bit hooked in at the start.

Jill

Yeah, I want to branch off that Suicide Squad thing because that was my apprehension in going into this film is that I thought a lot of the trailers were painting it out to be a spin off like a a copy of Suicide Squad. And I wasn’t particularly a fan. Well, I definitely was not a fan of the first one, the second one.

Quinny

Yeah.

Jill

Kind of grew on me. But I feel like the problem with Suicide Squad was all of those characters.

Peta

Thought they were.

Jill

Not **** and acted that way. They were full of bravado. They had no time for anybody else and they. Yeah.

Peta

They all thought.

Jill

That they were the best person in that team and therefore we’re just, they’re doing their own thing and that kind of mismatch disjointed team doesn’t work, whereas this team. They’re all self deprecating. They all think they’re the worst person on the planet and not fit for the job. Yeah, except for John Walker. But he’s different stories.

Peta

They’re deeply burned out. Well, no. He has his own. He’s, he’s. He’s got a facade, but he’s a different jellyfish.

Jill

He’s a different kettle of fish. Exactly. Exactly. But these guys all kind of work.

Quinny

I gotta say it.

Jill

A bit better because. They were kind of all on the. Same playing field.

Quinny

I was just going to say I I agree that they are on the same playing field and I really liked the fact that a character as as like fundamentally dislikeable as Walker who you know has, you know, you spent an 8 episode TV series.

Jill

Ohh I despised him.

Quinny

Yeah.

Jill

Even going into this, I’m like, God, I ******* hate him. But by the end.

Dion

You still hate him, but you understand him.

Quinny

Yeah.

Jill

Change my mind.

Quinny

Honestly, I I’ve said it to somebody. I said that there is one look in the film that he gives you, Lena, that you just go. Oh, OK, right. There’s and and it’s a. It’s a moment of, I guess vulnerability but it’s. It’s just enough and that that to me says a lot about the quality of the film, that he doesn’t have to, you know, do a gigantic self sacrificing thing or anything like that, for to, for us to be. Won over by him.

Speaker 1

Hmm.

Quinny

The the the film has the the confidence in itself to just say, OK, he just has to look and acknowledge the fact that he’s a ******. And that’s enough growth for us to go. OK, maybe. He is redeemable. Yeah.

Dion

The.

Jill

Now, I don’t hate him.

Peta

Ones a really nice moment because it wasn’t over explained, and I think that’s the other thing that this somehow managed to avoid that horrendous overexplaining that we get in franchises where everything that you know you have to like.

Jill

Hate him. I just love to hate him.

Peta

No, explicitly through dialogue. I think you know somehow we’ve we’ve kind of managed to avoid that trap as well. And there was a little bit of trust in the audience to catch that look and not have it overtly explained, which again was kind of. Yes.

Quinny

Yeah.

Peta

Little unusual these days.

Quinny

Yeah, yeah, I I was surprised at the level of of confidence in the film to just go. Oh, no, my our audience is smart. Enough. We don’t have to beat people over the head with it. Yeah, I mean early on. And there’s there’s a couple of bits of exposition that I was like ******* hell, right, you know where it’s like you’re this. You’re you’re just an assassin who could do this. Oh, yeah? Well, you’re just a dinosaur, Captain America. Ohh, well, you’re just this.

Jill

I mean yes, that’s that’s that’s for the newbies that.

Peta

Exactly you need to, but at least that is exposition within.

Jill

Within a dialogue, it’s not, it’s not paragraph, yeah.

Peta

You know within within. Some kind of rather than just. Yeah, yeah. If you can get the exposition out within conflict, that is so much less annoying than literally just facing the camera and like being like, oh, we found this video.

Dion

Yeah. Wasn’t a voice over. Going this guys, who this person who?

Speaker

Hmm.

Quinny

Yeah.

Peta

Infomercial.

Dion

Here’s the computer with all the information on it.

Quinny

Ohh.

Speaker

Yeah.

Peta

Wow. Ohh. He, he, he he’s he’s a he’s a segment from a television programmer. We’re interviewing somebody and we’re just gonna do a supercut of archive. This will. Be. Oh, God, yeah. Like you will like your type.

Dion

Well, let’s play it during the let’s play it during the. Yes.

Quinny

What was?

Dion

That day, let’s play it during the credits. Yeah, we’re we’re watching the credits. We can understand how they all got. Here.

Jill

Yeah. Yes.

Quinny

Yeah, like it’s it. When you when you are dealing with a 36 movie back story and you know multiple TV shows and stuff. Yeah, it’s a slog to try and work out. How do you? How do you? Give enough back story and I thought they managed it surprisingly well. I mean this is I guess if you were going to say it’s anything, it feels like a bit of a soft sequel to Black Widow. In that it’s really about. The trauma and yeah, it’s it’s yelena’s story and the the relationship with her. And Alexi is is very important to it.

Peta

Remaining based.

Quinny

But I mean, yeah, I think it’s it’s, it’s big enough to be its own thing. It’s not Black Widow 2, it is Thunderbolt and you know, was it the West Westborough Valley Thunderbolts?

Speaker

Idea.

Quinny

As sponsored by she’s. Electrical.

Peta

No, it’s a tyres. It was a tyre.

Quinny

Store, wasn’t it? No, no, no. It could not have been Shane. Shane had no money. I mean, I have actually watched the film twice. I went back. Yeah. Yeah. I went back to watch it cause I wanted to go with my partner and she she enjoys the Marvel movies and I got to say, I actually got a much bigger emotional hit out of it second time around because I because I knew where we were going.

Jill

All good. Really.

Quinny

And stuff and you know. Sort of. Waiting for something that isn’t gonna come up. Like if you cause because it’s a Marvel film, but you kind of are waiting for the giant. CGI battle at the. End. Sure. You know, yeah. You’re waiting for sky beam. You’re waiting for huge battle sequence where everybody does special power. Knowing that this was a different kind of film, I was able to engage much more with the emotional language of it. Yeah, and find there was so many more points in there where I was like, yeah, that’s funny. But ****, that’s actually quite heartbreaking.

Speaker

Hmm. Yeah.

Quinny

You know where characters are saying how ****** they are. And yeah, it’s it. I was really impressed with that. And and seeing the the social reaction to it, which has been, yeah, fun film, really enjoyed it. But so many more people going was not expecting this.

Peta

No, and I think in.

Quinny

It’s expecting to have an emotional thing.

Peta

A way. You know, breathe new. Well, really tried valiantly to say something and what it was trying to say was super, super, super valid, but I just kind of think that it it missed. It overshot the mark there. And I think in contrast, this film was really trying to say something and. Hit the bullseye. In what it was trying to say and and how it was saying it, and like in in you know kind of like a surprising like ohh that’s what we’re saying, OK didn’t expect that from this film, but. Cool, cool message.

Jill

Yeah. I mean, I think a lot of this.

Peta

Without, you know, without being being spoilery because like a lot of how that emotion hits does belong in spoilers, but yeah.

Jill

Sure. But I feel like a lot of us in recent years have gone through dark moments. Like we all. Experienced lockdowns and being separated from people. There’s also like. You know the existential crisis that’s kind of dissolving in. America right now and.

Quinny

Yeah.

Jill

There’s, there’s a lot of heavy **** going on and I feel like this is kind of a movie. For the pie. Period where we can all just kind of acknowledge that, hey, we might not all be coping, but you know, if you have people around you, there’s a support network, you just need to reach out and find those people.

Quinny

Umm, so I said to Dean yesterday when I came into work I was like Ah Dion. What fresh hell is it today? Or is it just yesterday’s hell? Just warmed up again?

Dion

And Arizona, where who you get out of my workplace. You don’t work here. Anyway, yeah, I found I well, I found that it was interest.

Quinny

But yeah, yeah.

Dion

And to discover that the director, Jake Trier, one of the reasons that I feel it comes across better as a more in tune and thoughtful piece, especially when it comes to emotional stuff, is because of the work that he’s done, which was, you remember robot and Frank, which was a great. Like buddy film from ages ago that he was on that, but he also Jake Trier also worked on beef. Did anyone see beef on Netflix? So that’s a really good, you know, kind of interpersonal or how to how?

Speaker 1

Sorry.

Peta

Yeah. Yeah, that’s.

Jill

God’s emotional conflict, yeah.

Dion

To work. About exactly. And also he directed the you have a lot to learn. Pirates episode of Skeleton crew. Yeah. So remember all of that kind of stuff. That was a bit of a scarier episode of.

Peta

Yeah.

Dion

But yeah, like it was a nice take on the traditional Marvel beat em up sort of thing. While there is enough, I think action in there to satisfy you, enough of people who want that is a lot more to do with. Interpersonal relationships and the notion of depression and yeah, isolation and how that feels and how to overcome it or not even overcome it. But how to deal with it? I think that’s the greatest thing about. This no one in this film overcomes it.

Jill

Ohh no one was magically healed at the.

Dion

Yeah. No, I absolutely love that. Like you, it introduces all of these broken characters and it goes out of its way to explain that none of them are fixed. Yeah. You know, it’s like they’re all still broken, but they’re just, they’re they’re learning coping mechanisms and it’s.

Speaker

End I’m not for sure.

Peta

Most of. Like and, they’re broken together.

Dion

Yeah.

Quinny

Like at the start, I love how quickly Alexi is is able to to say, you know. Are you doing OK? Of course. I’m not doing OK, look. Around.

Speaker

What?

Peta

Do you mean? I would also say like for me, conceptually most terrifying Marvel villains since Kilgrave.

Speaker

Oh.

Peta

Yeah.

Dion

Conceptually. Right. Yeah, I look I. I quite enjoyed the the the way they presented it as well, because I kind of looked at it. Is like. That’s really a cool idea. It’s just nothing. And you can’t really know what it is, and you don’t really see it and it’s just there, but it’s absorbing everything around it. And I was like, interesting.

Speaker

Yeah.

Quinny

Yeah, like the the the black dog and but also the the visual language of it is so clear that it, like they said that they wanted the shadows to be like the shadows and Hiroshima, that was that was their intent and holy.

Jill

Oh.

Speaker

Wow.

Quinny

****. You know there? There’s a moment where it happens to a kid and you’re just like me running. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know. And that’s.

Dion

It did it. It hit those beats well.

Quinny

Yeah, like the that design, but also so there’s a the the character that we haven’t really talked about a lot is Bob. So we’ve got all of the other characters. Oh yes, also.

Dion

So is it Bob, Bob?

Peta

Who spent the entire movie going? Where have I seen that?

Dion

I was just going to say you all thought when I was talking about the nepo baby that I was referring to. What’s his name?

Quinny

Walker. Yeah. Wyatt Russell.

Dion

John Walker. Wyatt Russell. No, no, I’m referring to Lewis Pullman, the son of Bill Pullman.

Peta

Bill Pullman, I was going mad being like I’ve seen him, but it was a long time ago and he’s too young to have been. I don’t understand why is my brain telling me.

Dion

Who? Who saved us all in Independence Day? No, and I’m and I’m so I’m so happy that Lewis Pullman is reprising his role from earlier on when he appeared in as Bob in top Top Gun.

Peta

Xbox.

Dion

Maverick.

Speaker

And.

Peta

I feel like he should only accept roles of Bob now.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Dion

Yeah, he’s actually one of the things that’s.

Quinny

Is this road not Bob? Yeah, it’s.

Jill

That’s a ******* power move. You go your whole career only playing characters.

Speaker 1

Football.

Dion

It was actually one of the things that he said when he took the role of this is like, do I have to call like, is this character actually called Bob or can we is there any wiggle room on that cause? I literally just played a Bob who was associate who a socially awkward kind of nerdy.

Peta

Bob, yeah.

Dion

And now he’s playing another ball.

Jill

Boba verse good one product king.

Quinny

I we love the bubble mess. Interesting thing he wasn’t the original casting. No. Originally the film started production and it was Steven Yuen. Ohh, I know, right? Yeah. Interesting.

Dion

Oh, interesting.

Jill

Is that like too close to being invincible?

Quinny

That’s a. That’s a good point. Quite possibly, but he had to. There was a conflict and he went off to film. Mickey 17. Damn. So yeah, interesting. But I I think we got a really great performance there. Yeah, and.

Dion

It’s it’s it’s. It’s definitely a role that is and without spoiling it, you can’t really say what the role. Is. Too much. Without going into spoilers so.

Quinny

As in, as in the the. Where Bob ends up.

Dion

Or just who? Like just about Bob, like what about? Bob.

Quinny

What about Bob? It is difficult to talk about because like the character that he is was created for the comics and was created by a friend of ours.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Quinny

Paul Jenkins who?

Dion

Jenna jenko.

Speaker

Quinny

He’s he’s a lovely guy and he he was the guy who was responsible for writing Wolverine origins and and and other stuff.

Dion

Not the not the movie, the comic.

Quinny

Book. Yeah. The comic. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, he I, I, I like Janko stuff because he’s always going. OK, what’s an interesting thing that. I could do with his superhero. And how do we make this? Not just another person in a suit. Let’s explore something deeper.

Speaker

On that.

Quinny

And and you know, quite often it’s like, let’s explore what other traumas there are.

Dion

So much trauma.

Quinny

Uh, and so much trauma. Bonding with so good at.

Dion

That, Speaking of trauma bonding, how did everyone react to Bucky seeing Bucky back on the big screen?

Jill

Again, Bucky, I’m so ******* happy, because if I can’t have my Steve Rogers, I need my Bucky.

Dion

Yeah, he’s looking pretty good.

Jill

I wish I had Bucky when I had. Depression like ****.

Quinny

Yes.

Dion

I did like that bit where he was washing his. Arm in the. Dishwasher yeah.

Jill

That was good.

Quinny

It’s a content technology, of course. It’s dishwasher safe.

Speaker

Yeah. Yes, of course.

Quinny

I I enjoyed him and he I like that he’s still playing that same Bucky character but. He’s he’s now got a whole different raft of challenges. Like you’re a senator now. Clearly he’s not very good at it.

Speaker

Slash.

Jill

No, I like that.

Dion

He’s more of a punchy person, not a debatty person. How do we feel about Julia Louis Dreyfus’s Val like as a as a character, as an evil kind of character manipulator? I’m not 100% sold.

Jill

Ohh OK I I mean I like her. I admire a woman that can pivot and you know, sometimes you just gotta multitask and.

Dion

I’m not. I’m not with you. She does. Yep.

Jill

I wish I had an assistant like. Mel Mel gets **** done too.

Dion

Yeah, but you always gotta watch Mel. Was not exactly. Like Mel gets **** done, but Mel isn’t trustworthy. That’s what I’m worried about.

Jill

Mel’s just. Looking out for. The people. She’s like, keeping keeping Val in check.

Dion

I mean like I I know that it’s the 36th Marvel film that we’ve got. But like if there is one message I’m taking away from the rest of the earlier films is don’t ******* trust the government. They are just full of weird ******* people. And no wonder you get end up with people like first it was Hydra was full.

Quinny

Hmm.

Dion

The government and then you know, you got like Thunderbolt Ross doing, you know, dangerous experiment to eventually becomes the president. And then they’re using ex Nazis for their science. Ohh wait. This is America.

Quinny

MHM.

Dion

I see I see the problem here.

Quinny

I quite liked Mel. Mel was a well written character. Interesting enough may actually be another superhero. Yeah, character called songbird. And now, now Jill’s on board.

Dion

Who knows?

Jill

Wow.

Quinny

Her name is Mel Gold.

Dion

Should we? Should we have a bit of a rating and go to a clip and then do spoilery things or do you want?

Quinny

To do it a different way around. Oh, I I think. I think right, let’s let’s not **** with the the thing. But OK, I definitely want to get to spoil the town.

Jill

Sure.

Dion

Because we’re just doing the 1:00 tonight.

Quinny

Cause there’s a lot to talk about. In there, OK.

Dion

I mean, I’m happy to start. I’m just gonna roll straight through this. Like it had a lot better than I thought it was. So out of the recent crop of it. I’m gonna give Thunderbolts 80 cause I recommend it.

Speaker

Hmm.

Dion

There you go. OK. No. Like it’s not perfect. It does have structural issues that I didn’t enjoy. Sorry. Pretty Kenga has rated it. Ding Ding out of 100. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So on this new official rating system, I’m giving it a gene.

Peta

Yeah.

Quinny

God dammit.

Jill

Giving it a Ding.

Dion

I’m Yep, I’m going to do that. Or should I give? It a good old whip crack. There you go.

Speaker

We.

Jill

Put him Ding.

Quinny

I want it to be Dingle. Whip crack.

Jill

Whip crack is a Ding.

Quinny

Yeah, I don’t, haven’t no.

Dion

Ding. I’ve got a nut.

Quinny

Punch we’re parding.

Jill

Hoopa.

Dion

I don’t. I have no Ding bone.

Quinny

OK, please if you do have a a number, please drop it. Good. There we go. People dropping their numbers in the chat.

Jill

Yeah, so many.

Dion

Yeah, yeah, yeah. How how strong predict anger is that Ding, you’ve gotta give it. A numerical figure. How much Ding? How much Ding?

Quinny

As opposed to? Yeah.

Peta

Is it * ****?

Speaker

Yeah. Is it a?

Jill

Ding or is it a Dong? Is it a? Ding Dong.

Quinny

Luck. Write this.

Dion

Ah, yeah, that’s right folks. We’re two weeks away from just reading things as *****. How big * **** was that?

Quinny

Weeks. We’re minutes.

Speaker

Quinny

Away.

Dion

It’s not that. As a little Ding and end up as. A full Dong.

Jill

I’m feeling like Ding is somewhere between like 70 to 90. And then a. Dong is like 90 to 100.

Speaker

Right.

Jill

It’s like a Ding Dong.

Quinny

Unless it’s like all the way to. 100 minutes.

Jill

Bang Perfect 100 Dang.

Quinny

Perfect. Dang. Yeah. OK, **** we have.

Jill

I like this new. System. I’m definitely in the Ding territory.

Speaker 4

Jill

Wish I wish. It was a Dong but. Gonna go. I’m gonna go 82.

Quinny

Speaker

Nice.

Jill

Yeah, it wasn’t the most. Phenomenal movie, but. I had a lot of fun. I enjoyed all the characters and I enjoyed liking more. Of the characters. Yeah, yeah. Having my mind changed about characters in the. It’s done a good job.

Quinny

And and that’s a pretty impressive thing to be able to do because like there is at least one character in there who changing your mind on on that guy, he’s an impressive ******* turn around.

Jill

I vehemently hated him, but now I just love to hate him because he’s still a bloody mimbo.

Quinny

Yeah. Yes, but now he’s our member.

Jill

Remember, yeah.

Quinny

Hey, do you have a numerical Ding Dong Dang or though?

Peta

My numerical Ding. But yeah, I I I enjoyed it and I don’t have a lot of like. Straight up complaining to do about it.

Dion

But why? Why?

Peta

Well, there weren’t that many, but. Wise as a thing or you know, they they skirted that edge of like. I am having too much fun to ask and I know that some things in these worlds are ridiculous and that you haven’t tried to over explain it to me and therefore I’m willing to. Let it slide. Like and, that’s the thing with about why? Like Budweiser get worse sometimes when you try to explain ****, I might just don’t explain it and we’re fine. So I didn’t. I didn’t get distracted by any Budweiser or anything like that. So I say 888888 nice round round figures visually pleasing.

Quinny

Nice.

Jill

Yeah.

Quinny

Yeah, the right curves get all the right, yeah.

Jill

Ding a Ling Ding a Ling.

Peta

And and I look I I. Enjoyed that, it said. What it said. I I feel like it really skirted that line of being on the nose. Without feeling like it was too on the nose. Hmm. Because it’s not like it. Like, it’s not like it’s a hidden message. It’s definitely an overt. Like message but it didn’t feel like you’re kind of like grown. Thanks for the message guys.

Jill

Yeah, it wasn’t a PSA kind of.

Peta

Situation. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And. And, you know, I like, I like that. I like that. That’s where it went. And I wasn’t expecting it to go there.

Jill

After school special.

Quinny

Yeah, I’m. I’m up with you there, Pete. I like first watch. I I really enjoyed life a lot. Had a good, good time with the character second, which I actually got more from it and, you know, saw a few bits and bobs here and there that I went, oh, OK, nice. But. Yeah, really engage with characters and. And. Realize that that it’s been quite a while that since I’ve been emotionally invested in the well-being of characters.

Speaker

Yeah.

Quinny

You know, that’s a really nice feeling. You know, I don’t necessarily. Need them to be flying all around the screen with laser blasts and stuff like that, but if you can show me a bit where my where the character that I’ve I’ve become, you know, really engage. With is in actual peril emotionally. Oh yeah. Thanks. I’ll. I’ll. I’ll take five more of those. Thanks. So, yeah, 89 from me. Actually. I really got a lot out of it and. I think it’s a surprisingly good film. 36 movies deep mate good hat.

Dion

You gotta you gotta find a little bit of the the gems after digging through so much ******* dirt.

Quinny

True, it’s.

Dion

True, it’s true. I mean, you know, but what are you after here? 36 is a long series of movies to come out about 1 ******* property.

Jill

Yeah, they can’t be all. Killer no.

Dion

Yeah, not not, not. Not every James Bond film is great.

Jill

Oh Roger Moore.

Dion

There’s one. But funny, but funnily enough. Funnily enough, every single fast and furious is just a masterpiece. Let’s go watch a bit about you later explaining why she’s having a lot of depressive episodes.

Speaker 2

No, there’s something wrong with me. And emptiness. I thought it started when my sister died, but. Now it feels like something bigger.

Speaker

Just the.

Speaker 2

Void. Or maybe I’m just bored. Boo. Assignment. This. Oh wait, hang on.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Assignment is complete.

Dion

The assignment is complete and we are more complete now. Ohh, hang on. I gotta put on. This little bit of spoilery little bit on those.

Quinny

Yeah, you better put some spoilery business there.

Dion

Moving around so that it fits around between people. There we go. Great.

Jill

I’m sure everybody knows this by now, but Florence Pugh did that stunt of jumping off the tallest building in Malaysia.

Speaker 2

Mm-hmm.

Jill

Not just her, but also her stunt women, and they all got into the Guinness World Records for. Doing.

Quinny

It ohh ****. I didn’t know they did the Guinness record. That’s amazing all.

Dion

The wire holding their Guinea pig. Amazing. I just don’t know. Holy ****. What is flirt Florence Pugh starting to take lessons from the Tom Cruise world of acting. Like I’ll just do that. I don’t know.

Quinny

Yes.

Jill

I really need to be with her. She’s like, I like heights and I wanted to do it so. Sure, there was a **** ton of paperwork and liability closure she had to. She had to sign, but yeah.

Speaker

Yeah.

Quinny

I watched some of the the like they did a little special on on that whole sequence and everything and like.

Speaker

Yeah.

Quinny

You look at. It and you’re like, **** me. That’s a long way up. And she just off she goes. And you’re like, hmm. **** as it was saying, just during the clip, she is just act well. You deal and said she’s acting rings around. People, but like she is so holding this movie.

Speaker

Hmm.

Quinny

Like she is very, very much the the the linchpin movie star. I heard another podcast saying that, you know, if you’re in IMAX, your face is 4, you know, four stories high.

Speaker

Hmm.

Quinny

You know you we see the micro expressions we see the micro emotions and she was. Yeah. Really, really impressive.

Jill

Yeah. I mean, I think so many people connected with her in the Black Widow film. So I think it was a smart move to put her in the lead for this one.

Quinny

It’s fine. I’ve loved her. Black Widow loved her more in Hawkeye. Just the the whole thing with her and. Kate Kate Bishop.

Jill

Yep.

Dion

Yeah. I mean, I think I think one of the things that’s interesting about Thunderbolts and the thing that I wasn’t expecting was that even though we’ve been introduced to that character, Elena, and she’s kind of the one that we’re following through Thunderbolts as a journey. And then you figure out it’s like she’s not really having too much of A hero’s journey. That you’re really invested in what she does because you can see how much she, how sad she is because even though all of this stuff has happened, she’s established this character now where I’m in this, she feels like the audience. I feel like her character is us, the audience who is like.

Speaker

Ohh yeah.

Dion

I’ve been watching these things now since I was a child and now I’m an adult. Or, you know, I had small kids who have grown all the way up now. So where, where do I sit? Is this something that I’m going to keep doing? Where? How do I find the joy in it again? And I really, I got that kind of metaphor of it going. I’m the audience. I’m Florence Pugh. I’m watching this going I’m bored with all this. I hate all of it. What’s the point of doing this anymore? And then by the? End of it I. Was like I can watch some more of this. I I get that now they’ve tried. They’ve made a point here. You know, collectively we’re Better Together and maybe these movies are going to be Better Together and then they just drop in the future of it and everyone was like.

Jill

Yeah.

Dion

OK, one more.

Quinny

Maybe two more, maybe 2, maybe 2, maybe.

Dion

More.

Peta

One or two more. Come on, yeah.

Dion

Three, maybe 3, maybe 5, I can do 5, I can do 5 Max 5 Max, you know?

Quinny

6 of twins.

Peta

But I think that’s also like that’s, you know, the fact that it felt to me structurally a lot like the First Avengers movie, is that kind of like, OK, I’m feeling like you, you’re kind of getting what you loved initially about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but. Like refreshed a little bit and in in a way that kind of feels more appropriate to the world we’re living in at the. Moment.

Quinny

Hmm.

Peta

So if we can kind of, you know, stay with that kind of storytelling that kind of, you know, tried and true like super character LED not. You know, treat us like we’re not stupid as an audience kind of storytelling, then, you know, maybe there’s you. You kind of feel like a bit more, a bit of the trust returns, I suppose in the franchise, yeah.

Quinny

There’s life. Old girl, yes.

Peta

I I would, I’d say, did any of you guys feel a call back to the to the? Daredevil hallway fight scene.

Quinny

Oh yeah.

Peta

Yes, alright. Yeah.

Quinny

The bit of that and a little bit of the old boy, which is I think as much as anything, what Daredevil was, was kind of referencing, but you know, single shot flight scene from interesting. Cool with very impressive choreo like loved it.

Peta

Yeah, I super spoiler.

Quinny

Look, we’re in spoil the territory. So where where we’re at, yeah.

Peta

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one of these big blocks blockbuster movies where the Big Bad is defeated by a group hug.

Dion

But refreshing. Do you know why? Cause it wasn’t a sky beam? Yes.

Quinny

It wasn’t somebody having to do some massive, you know, sacrifice and throwing themselves into a sky beam to suddenly stop the destruction of so.

Dion

Yeah. You know, I mean, they kind of did that. I mean, I really like the, the sacrifice just came a lot earlier in the piece before the resolution came, you know, with your Lena just kind of walking into the darkness that the encroaching darkness that was coming around. And I really like that idea of it. It’s it was not escapable, you know. And as we’re talking about it, it’s Bob who’s the sentry and also the void.

Speaker

Hmm.

Dion

You know, and the void is that evil character that is such a creeping void, and that is exactly what. That is, it’s depression, it’s depression, it’s dread. It’s it’s a, it’s an all-encompassing thing that stops you from being able to do anything else, cause you get sorely swallowed by it like it is literally a mental health better for and it did it really well because it just introduced it very slowly and very subtly. Like kind of like how depression.

Quinny

He’s.

Speaker

Hmm. MHM.

Dion

Works. It does not just burst through the door and goes rise. You know, it just kind of.

Quinny

It’s there and and goes hand in hand in a lot of cases with cause. I mean we we sort of look at void and say, OK, well there’s there’s your classic sort of depression. But in fact century Slash Bob is is very much bipolar that you know he’s all about being the golden.

Dion

I like how it was handled.

Quinny

God and feeling invincible and feeling omnipresent and omnipotent. Full and. Then. That has to come with some kind of other side and like it. Yeah. As you were saying, Pete, the the conceptual horror of that villain slash not a villain. Is pretty. You know, it hits pretty hard for a lot of people, I think. UM. Yeah, sorry I I am still down one of my favorite lines in the entire thing where Yelena says something. Oh, you know, just hanging out in shame rooms and. And then Bucky shows up and he’s like, how are you? I’m great.

Jill

Yeah, my past is fine, so I’m OK.

Quinny

That a line that everybody who seen the you know, the rest of the month is is just like ohh God, what has he been going through?

Jill

The winter salsa.

Dion

What’s everyone been doing? Just hanging out in our own personal Hells?

Peta

But it is kind of it’s nice to have Bucky back where he feels like he belongs because the the whole senator thing did not feel.

Speaker 2

Hmm.

Jill

Congress.

Peta

It didn’t track the congressman thing, just didn’t feel like it was tracking for that.

Jill

No, it’s weird. Well, when when? When your boyfriend abandons you? To go back to his ex-girlfriend like. What do you do with your? Life do you do? I guess so.

Quinny

What politics?

Dion

Yeah, but then you also know that he’s like, you know, not technically gone, cause he’s probably just retired somewhere, so, you know. He’s not technically dead, really, he.

Jill

He’s living on the moon, apparently, yeah, but he’s also a geriatric.

Quinny

Totally.

Dion

Well, I mean, this is the thing. the Super soldier serum should keep you alive and much longer. So he may be 100, but he can still do push-ups and stuff.

Jill

Did you forget? What happened at the end of the game?

Dion

Yeah, I know I can’t. Fine. No, no, I don’t think I will.

Jill

Anyway, just a bit where John took the syrup.

Quinny

Yeah, no, he’s at the middle of Falcon and The Winter Soldier. He takes the.

Dion

That was in.

Jill

I completely forgot that.

Quinny

Syrup. In fact, that’s part of the reason he does go a bit crazy and then kill the guy with the shield.

Speaker

wow

Dion

Yeah, it’s road rage. It’s road rage. Yeah.

Jill

Wow, too many ******* things.

Dion

I mean, yeah, the thing. That I actually quite liked about this is after the century, like ***** up his shield.

Speaker

The shield Taco and.

Dion

To shield Tucker. But then when they did that, like skip ahead bit for the post, post post credit secrets, it’s. Still not fixed.

Jill

It was not the only one strong enough to put it back, like even his super soldier juice, Bucky, super soldier juice couldn’t. Bend it out again.

Quinny

I guess so.

Jill

Super soldiers actually like Alexia and Bucky, and on and neither of them can straighten out of Vibranium shield.

Quinny

Yeah, there’s three super shift.

Dion

You you would have thought that you would have thought that someone in Wakanda could have just organized that considering that literally manufacture stuff out of, you know, couldn’t they just send him a new one?

Jill

You’ll attack her.

Peta

Yeah, well, like I. Feel like there might be, you know, some, like, internal politics happening in the world because these were kind of, you know, supporting The Avengers or is it the kind is?

Quinny

Well, yeah.

Jill

What if for the new events? What if the shield is not?

Quinny

The kind of supporting. Avengers.

Peta

Ohh what if?

Quinny

Vibranium. What if it’s?

Jill

It’s that. No. What if it’s adamantium?

Peta

Well then then.

Quinny

Ah.

Dion

Then there’s shitloads of it, and then we get Wolverine.

Peta

To turn up well, I was gonna say some. Somebody has to be able to do something without about him. Otherwise, how does it end up in Wolf? Or like, you know, the rules of the world? I don’t know.

Quinny

Uh.

Dion

They’re just. They just gotta wait till wait till Magneto shows up and he can just fix. That and look at.

Speaker

Him just. Yep.

Jill

Yeah.

Quinny

Yeah, I would watch that. There were, there were a lot of things in there that are very, very dark, but there’s lovely moments of light. The post credit sequences, though. My what a joy. I’m all down, and apparently they were actually shot and directed.

Speaker

Uh.

Quinny

By the Russo brothers.

Jill

Ohh OK.

Quinny

On the set. Of doomsday.

Jill

That makes sense. Makes sense.

Quinny

Yeah. So, yeah, they they were shot like less than two weeks ago, which is terrifying.

Dion

So now, now it’s just like. And no, no, that we’re in spoiler territory. And this isn’t actually a spoiler. This is just fan theory about the information that we got based on these post credit scene.

Jill

Mm-hmm.

Dion

Now the extra dimensional Fantastic Four. Maybe appears I don’t know. Does this how we get Doctor Doom in this universe as well does?

Speaker

Mm-hmm.

Jill

See, this is my theory as well. Now that we’ve established multiverses, I’m thinking Fantastic Four is shot in period in another dimension and I feel like whatever circumstances occur in that.

Dion

He come in.

Jill

Film at the end of it, something happens and they get shot into another dimension into this period and this is how we get the Fantastic Four and all of The Avengers in a movie.

Quinny

And the X-Men, because we’ve seen the the we’ve seen the chairs, yeah.

Jill

That doctor doom. Yeah. Yeah, exactly.

Quinny

I think there’s. Yeah. It’ll be interesting to see.

Dion

As long as Patrick Stewart doesn’t go anywhere, so everyone is just like.

Jill

Don’t jinx it, dude.

Speaker

I’m sure now.

Jill

Everything.

Quinny

Yes, so interesting thing and and my biggest like I’ve I’ve really enjoyed the film as we’ve talked about my biggest bugbear about this thing is not the film itself. It is what’s happened in the marketing since the films come out.

Jill

Oh my God. I know, right? Like, give people a chance to watch the ******* movie before you start changing all your branding.

Quinny

Literally, they gave it the opening.

Jill

Weekend. Ohh crap.

Quinny

The opening weekend and then on, I think the Monday, possibly the Sunday, I’m not sure they changed the branding.

Jill

Jesus.

Quinny

And now, apparently, most of the billboards are now going to be changing. But the like, what I’m worried about now, because I actually think it, as I said to somebody, it’s like it’s the best gag in the film. Yeah. Like, it is literally the tag at the end of the film. And then you’ve just gone, hey, we’ve been calling this movie Thunderbolt.

Jill

Yeah. You guys.

Speaker

Asterisk.

Quinny

Yeah. **** you. You don’t get the the joy of the last gag. We’re going to tell you, because now that the movie is now called New Avengers. So.

Peta

Yeah, that’s a surprising and weird move.

Jill

I just. It’s like when Lego releases.

Dion

No, I don’t.

Jill

Their sense before the ******* movie comes out. And spoils everything.

Quinny

Yeah, yeah, but this was clearly a planned thing to go. OK, we’re releasing this, you know, because it’s always been a Thunderbolt asterisk. The intent was always to do this. And you’re like,

Dion

Hey.

Speaker 1

Yeah, but I don’t.

Speaker 2

Jill

Know. Give it. Give it a couple of weeks.

Quinny

Yeah, yeah.

Dion

I mean, they’re just gonna get overshadowed as soon as a Fantastic Four show up. Anyway, yeah. Like, I mean, you know, in terms of superhero teams, the new Avengers is this kind of like great placeholder. Now give me the X-Men. Give me the fantastic give me. Give me the rest of it. I don’t need this ****.

Quinny

I and I do love it because the new Avengers in the comics were also kind of like really OK. You know who are the newer?

Jill

I just loved in the the end scene where Bucky comes in, he’s like Oh well, Sam’s like gonna sue us for the name because he’s starting his own Avengers. And apparently, you know, he’s got the rights. To it.

Dion

I love that. It’s great. Also got. The shield and that’s 90%. Of it.

Quinny

Yeah, I’ve got a few. Yours is a Taco.

Jill

So we’re going. To have The Avengers and the new. Then.

Dion

I mean, I I I really hope I really. I really hope they keep Val on that whole control slash marketing thing. And then finally we’re gonna get things like the West Coast Avengers, the Great Lakes Avengers. Ah, which is just.

Quinny

The new Avengers.

Jill

So create like.

Quinny

Something there. Thanks.

Dion

Ohh yeah, they they they exist. That’s a real team. That’s got squirrel girl. She leads the Great Lakes Avengers. Cute.

Quinny

Ohh that’s yeah, I would love to see she Hulk show up and turn up for one of The Avengers teams, but this is the thing we’ve. We’ve, you know.

Jill

Well, she’s a West Coast girlie.

Quinny

She is a West. Coast and I’m pretty sure, yeah.

Jill

Yeah, her Ant man.

Quinny

It would be fun to see West Coast Avengers, the new Avengers, the All New Coco Avengers.

Jill

Unless. Unless sand leads the young Avengers. What if he puts together?

Quinny

Well.

Jill

The young Avengers.

Quinny

Cause that we have certainly been building a a young Avengers type team and I thought that’s where they were going but this.

Speaker

Hmm.

Dion

Go deeper. Cuts. We get the new Warriors in.

Quinny

Like.

Speaker 1

Oh.

Quinny

Jesus and now Peter’s starting to glaze. So an interesting thing.

Peta

I’m just trying to live in the universe that I’m being given right now, guys.

Quinny

Interesting thing that I I was reading I didn’t know and I’m not sure like this is apparently canonical to the comics, whether it’s actually but Yelena in the comics is canonically asexual. And yeah, and I was. I could actually say. That like cause I was I was. Kind of glad of the fact that the relationship with her and Bob didn’t feel necessarily like a romantic thing at all. It felt like people who needed to.

Jill

Romeo.

Quinny

Help each other. But yeah, I was like, OK, that may be what it is in the comics, but also movie universe **** only know. You know, these are very different beasts.

Jill

Yeah.

Dion

Ohh look is there is there anything on the spoilery about this? I mean it was it was good. I mean, I like the fact that. The the film went in different directions. Than I expected when I walked in and I came out of it going actually, that was fine as long as I kept keep that self deprecating sense of humor. In the future, they will create a a point of difference.

Quinny

Oh.

Dion

In this Marvel Universe.

Quinny

Karina brings up a good point that is quite a big yeah. Sorry I didn’t mean to step on your point. You’re.

Speaker

Ohh.

Quinny

Right.

Dion

I got it.

Quinny

The yeah. So let’s pour one out for taskmaster.

Jill

Yeah, that’s kind of disappointing.

Quinny

Hmm. Yeah, less than 5 minutes on screen.

Dion

Yeah. I mean.

Jill

Yeah, strange choice.

Speaker 1

Hmm.

Jill

Did they think? Ohh we’ve got too many women. We’d better kill one.

Quinny

I I did say to somebody why I think they like, because they also said if you’d taken ghost out of the film, nothing would have changed. It wouldn’t have affected the film at all. And I was like, yes, but you actually have to have characters for it. No. Like, yeah, you, you you have to have a team.

Jill

He’s like the new Avengers can’t. Be 3 people.

Quinny

Yeah, they have. They have to have a team. They have to have a dynamic, but also taskmaster I think needed to be there from a story structure perspective to say, OK, people can die. Hmm. It then gives you the question mark of. Will one of these other ones die? Is there a possibility? I mean, probably not. Yeah.

Peta

I had no memory of Taskmaster or ghosts from the previous films, so I was just like, oh, I did. I just didn’t remember that character. So I was just kind of like, I feel like I’m supposed to care about this person, and I’m pretty sure I’d know them from somewhere, but Oh well.

Speaker 1

Hmm.

Speaker

Watch Black Widow.

Jill

Oh.

Speaker

Jill

We weren’t even given a. Chance to care about her to. Be honest. Like we didn’t get a. Chance to care about her in Black Widow.

Quinny

Hmm. Yeah, make.

Jill

Because she was just like a lackey.

Quinny

Yeah. And it’s it is a bit of a shame because Taskmaster in the comics is is kind of a a very cool character who shows up time and time and time again. And in this she had kind of been relegated to, yeah, Lackey, very competent assassin, but with no real character depth.

Jill

Yeah. Yeah. So we never got to kind of explore her at all. And then they just kind of killed her. So it was like ohh wow, OK.

Speaker 1

Hmm.

Quinny

I I mean it did a a pretty good thing of of surprising me like that early in the film was like, oh, ****, OK, they just killed her ****. And I kept on expecting her to come back and she didn’t.

Speaker

Yeah.

Jill

Yeah. Yeah, I was like. Ohh surely they couldn’t have just killed?

Dion

Someone don’t worry, it’s a Marvel film. Eventually she’ll come back just like the comics.

Speaker

Jill

I mean, no one ever really dies.

Dion

No. Then there’ll be a flashback. Something else happened. Maybe it’ll be alternate dimension. Taskmaster. Maybe it’ll be taskmasters.

Quinny

Yeah.

Dion

Does it? Yeah.

Quinny

And then all of it’ll be taskmaster as a dude. And all of those whiny ***** fanboys who were angry that it was a woman who suddenly get their ******* anyway.

Dion

Yeah. Enough about that. I’m excited with this brand new day that we have right now because we have a different kind of government to the one that was represented in this film. Thank goodness. I mean, locally here in Australia, it was.

Quinny

Oh my. Yeah. Yes.

Dion

Good.

Quinny

Yeah. And we have Fantastic Four to look forward to. I did see that a few people saying it’s a bit of a worry when the movie like the movie, actually spoils itself in its own credits. So it’s it’s spoiled, its post credit sequence in its own credits. And I and I did agree, I watched the credits. And then it said Fantastic Four theme by Michael Giacchino.

Jill

Yes, I said the exact same thing.

Peta

To Peter? Yeah. Joe was like, where was the Fantastic Four music? I didn’t hear the Fantastic Four.

Quinny

It was like.

Peta

Music and then.

Dion

Yeah. Hmm. I was fine. Yeah.

Jill

And then, yeah. That’s not that wasn’t the end of the world.

Dion

No. Speaking of the end of the world. The end of the night.

Quinny

As we know it, what’s going on for the?

Dion

Rest of the month’s team.

Jill

It’s anime.

Speaker

Yeah.

Quinny

Yay.

Jill

Anime for the rest of the monkey guys.

Quinny

It’s all anime all the time. Giant eyes and lots. Hero. It’s a it’s a 47.

Peta

I’m so psyched to you guys.

Quinny

You’re not joining in with the rest of anime. You don’t. Want to be a part of anime?

Peta

Selectively, I’ll selectively join in.

Jill

You weep with us.

Dion

There’s a list of animes that we’re watching.

Peta

I like. I like the sound of the one that Jill’s gonna watch.

Jill

Ah, yes, rose of design.

Quinny

Very, very pretty. Yeah, very, very, very pretty.

Dion

Yeah. Next next week we’re doing is the rows of Versailles.

Jill

The rows of Versailles. It is a 2025 animated film. Based off the old 80s rose. Of Versailles anime so.

Peta

Yeah, I’ve really read one of the reboot.

Dion

I love the fact that this. Is this is a reboot? Of of an anime I’ve never. Seen. Yeah, there you go.

Quinny

OK, there’s some of my favorites. I’ve watched vampire Hunter 3D three times, the 70s version, the 80s version and the 2000s.

Jill

Version oh Dang it. What about the Hugh Jackman version?

Quinny

You. We do not speak. Van *******. Film Jesus. Well done, Jill, you have found a new trigger for me.

Speaker

Yes. Yeah.

Jill

Yes, it’s Hugh Jackman’s van Helsing.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Dion

For the rest of the month, it’s it’s it’s anime heavy as long with whatever comes out that we decide to. About after. Because Andrew’s coming out. Uh, so wrapping up and then what is it? How to train your dragon and then a bunch of other stuff that’s coming. So I’ll just have to look at.

Speaker 1

It’s just.

Quinny

Mm-hmm. There’s all sorts of stuff happening at the moment on teeth and and stuff as well, and new series of you has started, which I’m.

Dion

That’s right. Yeah, destination, Lilo and Stitch the the the second part and the last Mission Impossible film bring her back, which is the horror from the guys who did.

Speaker 1

Or.

Dion

The hand one.

Quinny

Ohh, where the the porcelain hand that you?

Speaker 5

Ohh, that was creepy, yes.

Dion

Yeah. Yeah. Talk to me. Don’t you? Thank you.

Speaker 4

Talk. Talk. Thank you.

Jill

Ohh me, but that was such a good movie.

Dion

Yes.

Peta

Yeah, it’s really interesting in Natural History series coming out, so.

Jill

On the yes, it is reminders.

Quinny

Oh, yeah. What’s what’s what’s? That called Peter.

Peta

Sorry, second plug of the episode. That’s a terrible thing.

Quinny

Peter, if you cannot plug your you, your freaking amazing TV series, Emmy award-winning Peter, who’s also on TikTok, by the way.

Dion

If if yeah.

Peta

If if not.

Dion

Peter.

Peta

It’s a very end joke. Don’t look at me on TikTok. You’re gonna actually find my TikTok doppelganger. Somebody tell me who I look like on TikTok. That made somebody.

Dion

Yeah.

Peta

Stop me and say are. You on TikTok? Yeah.

Dion

Go. Come on, Peter.

Peta

No, I’m not. I’m not. I’m I’m. I’m pretty sure they won’t let me on TikTok because I’m over 35.

Quinny

They’ll let you.

Dion

Come on, Peter. If not plug, then why plug Shaq? Go. What? What is it? Next week. Tell us. Give us your pitch Tuesday next week.

Speaker

Yeah.

Peta

Well, you’re going to switch this off halfway. Through.

Speaker

Yes.

Dion

We’re going to have 1/2 hour show next week. Sorry, Jill.

Quinny

You’ll get through the rows of the.

Peta

She’s on iview so you can watch it after 8 PM, 13th of May, ABC and iview, the Kimberley. It is. It is. It is a show that we made and it’s a long time and I’m very tired and then no, it’s wonderful. It’s it’s a we worked with Mark Cole Smith who you may know from his many film and television appearances but who is also an egg and a man who actually is from. Kimberly and he wrote the show with us and it’s in his voice in the narration, which just kind of just gives it a whole. It’s very different to anything that we’ve. Ever. Made because of that really kind of person, personal element of the storytelling. So yeah, if you’re interested in Natural History, storytelling, if you’re interested in the Kimberley and what is happening over there. Maybe jump on iview and check it out? Definitely after very seriously listening to us talk about whatever anime that we’re watching.

Dion

The the Rose of Versailles. The rows of.

Quinny

This one, the pretty one that looks very nice. Ohh sorry. My eyes are watering really badly.

Dion

Yeah. Yeah, it was a the discussion of all of this beautiful stuff about the Kimberly. It’s just got your emotional.

Quinny

I think so. My eyes just watered in in amazing, even without having seen the show. Pete, I I will assume that it is beautifully shot and is lovely.

Peta

We think so.

Dion

Yeah. Good answer and then and then come back on the 20th for our review of the Kimberley well.

Peta

While I watch in horror.

Speaker

Well, yeah.

Dion

Pain. Strange. Smile going.

Peta

And you guys understand by sometimes I’m like. I just don’t want to be mean to these. People.

Quinny

Why is quinny swearing so much about a shark called the Kimberly?

Peta

It’s so soul destroying when people give us me reviews.

Dion

This review would have been better on TikTok.

Quinny

All right, lovely. So that’s enough. So we’ve got the Rose of Versailles and then later in the month.

Dion

What else have we got? A perfect blue, which I have never seen. So this is gonna be very.

Quinny

It’s all over the years.

Dion

Interesting exactly like.

Jill

Ohh man I am looking forward to rewatching. It so we can.

Dion

Yeah. OK, man. Classic.

Quinny

Talk about it. I’m looking forward to that. And I’m also looking forward to you then also going and watching God watching God.

Dion

I’ve got to go to church.

Quinny

The The the Christopher Nolan one inception.

Dion

Oh. Oh. Right.

Quinny

Because there’s there’s a few sequences from perfect blue that Nolan has said that we’re massively.

Dion

Inspired. Yeah, so I’m looking for I’m gonna say perfect this. It’s the classic. And then at the end of the month. We’re doing Quinn’s choice.

Jill

Wait, Connie, are you talking about Papri?

Quinny

****. It’s paprika. Sorry. Yeah, yeah. Sorry, my bad. My apologies.

Jill

Rico.

Speaker

Was, yeah.

Dion

Nothing to do with it.

Jill

The other Satoshi Kon movie.

Quinny

It’s a Satoshi Cohen movie, so I was like, ****, sorry my bad, perfectly amazing. I’m looking forward to watching, rewatching that, cause it’s been a long ******* time since I’ve watched it, but yes, we we end the month on some.

Jill

With Quinn’s trash choice.

Quinny

I I feel like I’m. I’m like if we’re doing anime I am gonna make it as the worst kind of anime that I can. Yeah, it’s called Batman ninja versus Yakuza League.

Jill

As as American as possible.

Dion

I’ve seen like 5. I feel like 5 minutes oh.

Jill

The Ricks of Sword boy.

Quinny

Yeah. Oh, oh, this this while you were doing anything. He studied the sword.

Dion

Amazing it is.

Quinny

Looks terrible and I cannot wait to to height review it like there’s no tomorrow.

Jill

Right.

Dion

So what do we got? It’s like 1 nice new anime, one classic anime and one ******* offspring.

Quinny

Who knows?

Speaker

Yeah.

Jill

I mean, if we didn’t Chuck a. A Westernized one in there, we really talking about anime.

Quinny

I mean, I do feel slightly guilty now and like maybe I should have chosen something that was actually proper animate.

Jill

It’s too late now. It’s on the schedule.

Speaker

No.

Jill

That take taxis.

Dion

Yeah, we can’t amend things as we go. What would what would? We look like if we change things. As we needed to.

Quinny

Yeah, we’ve never done that before. Certainly never changed the night or recording or anything.

Dion

Never done that before. Never done. Yeah. Yeah. Thanks for thanks for joining us, everyone. There was a, there was a fun, fun, you know, little look into the Thunderbolts slash the new Avengers slash. Oh my God, it’s coming.

Quinny

Like that.

Dion

And little promo for the Kimberley, which we’re all gonna watch next.

Quinny

Week. Yeah. Congratulations, Pete, on getting another show up onto onto the team.

Speaker

Thank you.

Quinny

Like so. You know, we we make a lot of jokes and **** like that, but also we know exactly how much work you put in and it is a pretty spectacular thing to have a show be going out on our national broadcaster. So yeah, you.

Dion

Yeah, another one.

Peta

So it’s nice to feel like like this one’s different to the ones we’ve. Made. Before, so you know, yeah.

Dion

Yeah. It’s nice, and they’re all banging. So I’m looking forward to.

Jill

Any spawning fish in this one?

Quinny

Yeah.

Peta

No, no spawning fish, but there there is a lot more Natural History than than we would usually have, and some of it’s a bit intense, so hold on to your hats.

Dion

Is it? Does it sometimes venture into unnatural history?

Quinny

Was built by aliens. Yeah, **** yeah.

Jill

What if?

Speaker

Aliens.

Dion

You know, one day I would love to meet Mirror universe, Peter, and they just make like. Like Trash, TV and mail stuff, it’s conspiracy theorist YouTube channel.

Jill

That was, that’s for TikTok.

Quinny

So. Peter.

Dion

She’s got a little. She’s got a little goatee and. Everything.

Quinny

So yeah, that’s that’s who Peter is on. TikTok. She’s she’s the Alex Jones of.

Peta

Oh, God. I mean, look, we do have like Dragons hatching out of X. So there you go. Catch that. Cool.

Quinny

Wait, I’m subtle.

Dion

Excellent.

Speaker

Excited for that?

Dion

Thanks everyone. We’re going to head off, have a great week. We’ll see you all next.

Quinny

Ohh thank you.

Dion

Time.

Quinny

Yeah, we we’ll indeed. And I’m gonna go and. We’ll go round. Hex. She’s playing some Red Dead Redemption. Wait. Bye.

Dion

Nice. OK, bye.
