What does it look like when an artist loses their career, their marriage, their record deal, and their sense of self — and rebuilds from the inside out?

In this episode, Dr. Greg sits down with Tracy Bonham, two-time Grammy nominated singer-songwriter and classically trained multi-instrumentalist best known for her iconic 1996 hit Mother Mother. Nearly three decades into her career, Tracy has just released Sky Too Wide, her first album of all original music in a decade — and the conversation that unfolds is as much about inner transformation as it is about music.

Tracy opens up about the trifecta of loss that cracked her open in the early 2000s — her mother's cancer diagnosis, her first divorce, being dropped by her record label, and living through September 11th just across the river in Brooklyn Heights. She talks honestly about the depression that followed, the toxic industry relationships that amplified her self doubt, and how the pressure of following up a gold certified debut almost destroyed her ability to create at all.

What pulled her through was a gradual turn inward. Qigong, yoga, gratitude practices, present moment awareness — and eventually a way of writing music that came less from labor and more from a place of genuine stillness. The song Damn the Sky, one of the standout tracks from her new album, fell out of her in a single sitting after a rough parenting day with no one around. She didn't change a word.

Dr. Greg and Tracy also get into the psychology of self-limiting narratives, the beginner's mind, Byron Katie's The Work, Florence Scovel Shinn, and why mindfulness doesn't require a mountain or a shaved head — just a few minutes and a willingness to pay attention to what's right in front of you.
