Autism and Parenting

Traditional highway

Listen Later

“Is it possible that we react to kids with Autism, ASD, ADD, and other conditions as though there is something wrong with them because we’re accustomed to the traditional ways of raising children, where we say, ‘Sit down and shut up. Eat when you’re told. Go to bed when it’s your bedtime?”
There’s a generation coming through who are more aware and more active, and people are saying, “There is something wrong with this generation of kids. There must be something we need to do, because disciplining them isn’t working.” This kind of discussion has been going on for many years.
Part of what’s going on is that the perception of how to raise a child has shifted 180 degrees in recent times. In many respects, we’ve taken childhood away from children. Kids are given hours of homework to do, even when they’re in kindergarten. Their lives are highly organized and tightly scheduled. They have little time to play in unstructured ways, to be in nature, or to explore their world. When does a kid get to be a kid? They should be able to go outside and play, have a good time, and run around.
