Transformed By Grace

Jesus casts out a mute demon in Luke 11:14-26, enabling the man to speak and causing the crowd to marvel, yet some accuse Him of working by Beelzebub while others demand a heavenly sign. Jesus refutes the charge by showing that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand and that He operates by the finger of God—proving the kingdom of God has come and that He is the stronger One who overpowers Satan and liberates his captives. In Luke 13:10-17, while teaching in a synagogue, Jesus sees a woman bent double for eighteen years by a “spirit of infirmity” that had bound her under Satan’s power. He ultimately restores her to an upright posture so that she glorifies God. The synagogue ruler indignantly objects to this healing on the Sabbath, but Jesus exposes his hypocrisy. After the Transfiguration, in Mark 9:14-29, Jesus finds a desperate father whose only son is possessed by a demon that violently seizes him, and throws him into fires and bodies of water to destroy him, and which the disciples could not cast out due to their weak faith. In this episode, we examine Luke 5:1-11, which illustrates moving “from shallow to deep water faith.” After teaching the crowd from Peter’s boat on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus instructed the unsuccessful and exhausted fishermen to launch out into the deep and let down their nets in broad daylight—the very opposite of their professional expertise—resulting in a record-breaking haul. This teaching from Matthew 14:22-33 chronicles how, after feeding the 5,000, Jesus sends His disciples across the Sea of Galilee by boat while He prays alone on a mountain. When a fierce contrary wind arises in the early morning hours, Jesus comes to them walking on the water. Peter boldly asks to come to Jesus, steps out of the boat in faith, and actually walks on the water toward Him—until he sees the boisterous wind, becomes afraid, begins to sink, and cries out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately catches him, they return to the boat, and the wind ceases. This account illustrates that the Christian life can lead us into storms and requires keeping our eyes on Christ, not on our circumstances. This is a question that many of us believers ponder, and think about more and more as we grow older. What reality do people find beyond the grave? Do they really “rest in peace?” The Bible teaches that to be “saved” means being rescued from the lake of fire, a real place of conscious torment and separation from God, where the lost remain forever under God’s righteous wrath for their sins. Yet God, in love, provided a Substitute, so that anyone who believes that Christ died for their sins and rose again is fully forgiven and delivered from this fate.
