Man, woman, stressed brain. What’s the difference? How does stress affect men and women? Is there a difference? These are some of the big questions I explore with Dr Delia McCabe.
Delia has devoted her work and study to how feeding the brain can bring about optimal health and performance. Recently Delia has focussed on the effect of stress on the female brain. And, she has discovered there are some significant differences in how the female brain is affected by stress. In this episode we explore this new research and look for ways both men and women can become more stress resilient.
Delia has a very effective way of deciphering the science and delivering practical ways we can improve our health and wellness to get to, and maintain optimal performance.
This is such a great episode, I’ve included an extended section at the end, where Delia and I continued our conversation and Delia dropped some big wisdom bombs. It’s so good I had to share it with you.

From fit and vibrant to total disintegration in the blink of an eye is certainly an extreme unravelling.
At aged 46, fit and vibrant Marie Kimber woke one morning to find she couldn't walk. Deteriorating rapidly, she was subsequently diagnosed with the highly debilitating illness known as Guillain Barre Syndrome and spent the next seven weeks totally paralysed in Intensive Care, kept alive by drugs and machines.
After a further two months in rehabilitation, she wheeled her wheelchair out of hospital to contend with life as a shadow of her former self. Ensuing Menopause added more doubts and complications to her already scarred self-esteem. When at the point of lying on the floor in tears, aching with unhappiness, she realised she had to make a change.
So she had to unravel her life in a different way. Unravel and rebuild.
She went on a journey of transformation from dull, disinterested and disintegrated to vibrant and sassy. She used her illness as a blessing; a wake-up call that eludes the less fortunate. She closed the door to death and opened the door to life.
She now lives her best life and shares her journey of discovery with other middle aged women. Marie compliments this with travel writing, inspirational speaking, mentorships and hosting small group ladies only tours overseas, she uses her life experiences to lead other women to confidence and curiosity.

Actions speak louder than words. Often the lessons we learn come from the examples that our parents show us. We can take these lessons and build upon them and then at a point in time we become the person we are.
In this episode we share the experience of Malka Silver and her very full life. Inspired by the work ethic her parents displayed, surviving the Holocaust and making the most of life, Malka has been an inspiration to many through her own life journey.
When Malka was 22 with a young family, her mother succumbed to Ovarian Cancer, her mother was only forty-nine. At thirty Malka was diagnosed with third stage Breast Cancer. Her children then were ten, eight and eight months. Malka plunged into a deep dark depression, and the gruelling twelve months of Chemotherapy treatment contributed to her depression. Her grit, determination and support of her family got her through. She went on to inspire and help others to take on the challenges of life.
Malka greatest achievements is being a wife, mother of three, Buba of seven, a passionate volunteer guide at JHC, a custodian of her father’s memory, selling her artwork internationally, an author of her father’s memoir “L’Chaim” which translates to “To Life” and soon the author of her Stepmother's book.
She is now also a contributing author to a new book, “Change is not a scary word” where she documents what it takes to make it through change when life is most challenging.

Who loves sharks?
For many, sharks are scary, but for Shannon Hurley sharks are like a kindred spirit. In this episode Shannon shares her life changing experience when she came, literally, face to face with a shark. In one brief but powerful moment she was transformed.
As an avid scuba diver and underwater photographer, Shannon has now travelled the world to explore our oceans and swim with sharks. She has helped rescue entangled birds and beached dolphins in her role as a marine ranger, and lobbied governments to protect our Great Barrier Reef and Australia's unique southern seas.
She is passionate about sharks because she knows there is a different story that needs to be told – one that involves their conservation, and how small individual actions can make a difference, starting with what seafood we decide to put on our plates.
In this episode she explains how we to can "Give a Fish" about sharks and why its important to be more informed about the seafood we eat.
