Here is what it looks like when there is broken communication in the Family.

• Examples of broken communication:
• Silent treatment.
• Constant arguments without resolution.
• Talking past each other or feeling unheard.
• Assumptions - thinking you know

 Common Causes of Broken Communication 

1. Unspoken Expectations:

   • Discuss how unmet or unclear expectations lead to resentment.
   • Example: Partner assumes the other "should know" their needs.
3. Emotional Baggage:
   • How past experiences (from childhood or previous relationships) impact communication styles.
4. Stress and External Pressures:
   • Work, finances, or parenting can shift focus away from meaningful conversations.
5. Differences in Communication Styles:
   • Verbal vs. nonverbal communicators; introvert vs. extrovert dynamics.
6. Tech and Distractions:
   • Over-reliance on phones or screens instead of face-to-face dialogue

The Impact of Broken Communication (5 minutes)

• Explore emotional and relational consequences:
• Increased misunderstandings and conflicts.
• Emotional distance and lack of intimacy.
• Erosion of trust over time.

1. Empathetic Listening:
   • Practice repeating back what you hear to ensure understanding.
   • “Seek to understand before being understood.”
2. Set Aside Dedicated Time:
   • Create a “check-in” routine free of distractions.
3. Use “I” Statements:
   • Reduce blame by expressing feelings without attacking your partner.
   • Example: “I feel hurt when you don’t respond to me” instead of “You never listen!”
4. Body Language and Tone Awareness:
   • Nonverbal cues often matter more than words.
5. Clarify Expectations:
   • Regularly discuss roles, responsibilities, and emotional needs.
6. Pause During Conflict:
   • Step away to cool down instead of escalating. Return to the issue with a clear mind.
7. Seek Professional Help:
   • Couples therapy or communication workshops as an investment in your relationship.

Her ministry focuses on the intersection of faith with culture pertaining to same-sex sexuality and gender identity. She works frequently with politicians and think tanks providing insight and messaging on the LGBTQ experience. As Founder/CEO of The Foundation United, she leads the organization in collaboratively providing systemic change to eradicate sexual exploitation and address sexual abuse, the root cause of trafficking. Her experience from corporate America, to being an Area Pastor at Willow Creek Community Church, to creating REAL TALK, a systemic tool to protect and arm churches, has positioned her to awaken and bring freedom to individuals from all walks of life. Her passion exists for leaders of the global Church. She is the author of Groomed (Harper Collins, 2020), and Speak The Unspeakable: Real Talk on Secrets, Sex and Being Set Free (Whitiker House, 2023). She is the recipient of the New York City Global Business Leader Award, SRQ Women of Influence Award, Tampa Bay Business Woman of the Year Award, and honored as one of the 21 Leaders for the 21st Century in New York City. She has led two TedX and LiftX Talks on leadership for over 17,000 military leaders, and spoke at the 2022 Global Strategy Forum in Austria.
