In this episode we were lucky enough to get to chat with Julie Peters, who is one of the co-founders of Transgender Victoria and the first openly trans person to run for parliament in Australia for the Australian Democrats.
In this episode Julie also takes us on a journey through Jungian psychoanalysis, academic writing as performance art, and leads us on a potted history of trans politics in Victoria, including the formation of the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, Transgender Victoria and important law reform efforts that led to our current federal protections against discrimination on the grounds of gender identity.
Julie’s thesis works to shed light on the experiences of trans and gender non-conforming people with the aim of helping health professionals deal with their trans clients as well as shedding light on the normative operation of gender in the social world. Read Julie’s dissertation.
You can also check out Julie’s PhD is which is intriguingly titled “A feminist post-transsexual auto-ethnography on challenging normative gender coercion.”
If you’d like to know more about Julie’s fascinating life please check out Julie’s video filmed for Deakin University Health students about gender identity and sexuality.
