Have you ever wondered why every one of us is a sinner—not merely because we sin, but because we were born that way? God appointed Adam as the covenant head of the human race. The covenant of works was made with him not only for himself but for all who would descend from him. When Adam willfully disobeyed, his guilt was imputed to us and a corrupted nature was conveyed to us. That is original sin: the guilt of Adam's first transgression and the inherited corruption of our whole nature. Death spread to all people because all sinned in Adam. This is not merely a dark doctrine. It is the necessary backdrop that makes the gospel shine. There is a last Adam. Where the first Adam's disobedience made many sinners, the obedience of Jesus Christ makes many righteous. • Who God Is: God is holy, just, perfect, and patient. His laws are an expression of His love, designed to protect us. His wrath is not arbitrary but a righteous response to persistent, unrepentant sin. • Who We Are: We are created in God's image with an innate desire to worship. Because of the Fall, this desire is broken. If we do not worship the one true God, we will inevitably find other things to worship (idols). • How We Should Live: o We must recognize the seriousness of sin and the holiness of God. o While our culture is more "sophisticated" and we may not bow to physical statues, we fashion our own idols from the things around us, hoping to find security, purpose, or happiness apart from God. o The story of God's judgment points us to our need for a savior. It is a picture of the wrath we all deserve. Jesus Christ lived the law perfectly, died the sinner's death to bear God's wrath for us, and rose again. We are called to place our faith in Him, who fulfilled the law we could not. The Church is God's intended solution for seeing His purposes worked out among people. As a community of believers, we are called to encourage one another to live according to God's ways. • We help each other recognize the things God has placed "under the ban." • We encourage each other to stay away from these things. • We remind one another that Christ took the wrath of God on our behalf for our transgressions, including the sin of self-worship. The only hope for giving God the glory He deserves is to trust in Christ alone, who took the wrath for the things under the ban upon Himself at the cross.

The time is drawing near for Daniel and his people to be sent back to Jerusalem. Daniel knows this from reading the prophet Jeremiah– the seventy years are almost up! And so, with that great hope before him he prays to his 'great and awesome God'. He pleads for mercy and forgiveness for himself and for his people and for the Lord's own sake. The Lord hears his prayer and responds immediately! The reply, however, is not what Daniel expected. Yes, the city would soon be restored but it will not be the end of their trouble. In fact, there is even more destruction to come. And yet, this word of great desolation is at the same time a vision of awesome love when transgression and sin will be put to an end and everlasting righteousness will be brought in. How can this be so? An anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. Please pray for myself and one another as we consider these tremendous truths.
